Upcoming Events
A calendar featuring all of the events scheduled thus far for the 2008-2009 school year is now accessible on the Shorecrest web page. The new format replaces what was formerly known as the line calendar, and we hope that you will find it easier to use. The calendar can be viewed by month for the whole school or separate divisions. When your cursor is placed over an item, a box appears providing full information about the event including a description and location.
Due to the large number of teams and specific athletic events, information about athletic games is not included on this calendar but will be made available online via a separate link.

Service Learning
UD Service Hours FAQ
What is the service hours requirement for Upper Division students?
Shorecrest has not had a service hours requirement in the past; however, beginning with this year's ninth graders, they will be required to earn 20 service hours each year until graduation.
Do the hours I worked during the summer count?
If you volunteered your time this summer, please check in with Ms. Stevens to review your service organizations and hours to make sure they count for 2008-09.
You're welcome to use the summer to get a head start on your service hours for the new school year. If you don't quite make the 20 hours during the school year, you can use next summer to make up your hours.
How many hours do I need to earn to graduate?
Shorecrest has not had a service hours requirement for graduation, but students applying for Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program/Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) Award must earn a minimum of 75 hours during their years in the Upper Division for FAS initial eligibility. Class of 2012 will need 80 hours to graduate.

Picture Lady and Gentleman Day
There are a still a few openings available to teach art appreciation to Lower Division students. We want to make sure each Lower Division class is included. Art experience is not required. The presentations are 30-45 minutes each month, six times per year.

This is a great opportunity to have fun and meet many children and teachers, as well as to create memories for students that will last a lifetime.
If you have any questions or would like more information about this program, please e-mail Brian Nestor at briannestor169 @aol.com or call 727-343-1684.
Fall Book Fair
We will be holding a Fall Book Fair on November 10-13, 2008 on campus during the school day and in the evening. Volunteers are needed to help with taking money at the registers, re-ordering books, setting up and breaking down, etc. If you would like to sign up for this committee, please contact Mary-Ellen Howells at mareh24@aol.com.
Used Uniform Sale
The Used Uniform Sale was held on Thursday, August 21 having been delayed due to Tropical Storm Fay. Turnout for the sale was wonderful and $7300 was collected with about $3120 going back to parents and $4200 donated to SPA. This year parents can pick up their proceeds in the Lower Division office.

Landy Hall Dedication and Ribbon Cutting

|
As the harpist played, a crowd of donors, including parents, faculty and staff, board members, and administrators watched on Saturday, August 16, as Landy Hall was officially dedicated. Headmaster Mike Murphy welcomed the guests and presented gifts to those most involved in the construction of the new high school.
He thanked top donors David and Michelle Rau and their children, whose generosity made the dream of a new facility a reality, and spoke of the impact of their donation towards thousands of children who will benefit from the new facility. Following Mr. Murphy, Capital Campaign co-chairs Pam Murphy and Cathy Collins each said a few words about the wonderful participation of our community towards the capital campaign and upcoming construction.
Head of Upper School and Assistant Headmaster Stephen Manella expressed his delight for the new high school and its state-of-the-art components, and student speaker Stephen M., Senior Class and Student Council Vice President, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the student body and vowed to be good stewards of the school. |
Two ribbon cuttings, with the first one including the Rau family and the second comprised of Cathy and Steve Collins, Pam and David Murphy, Mike Murphy, Stephen Manella and Stephen M., finalized the official dedication.
Afterwards all of the guests proceeded into Landy Hall where they toured the building, enjoyed refreshments, and celebrated Shorecrest's good fortune at having such a wonderful new facility and generous community.

After the Convocation on Wednesday, the ceremony was repeated for the entire Upper Division student body with Senior Class and Student Council President Helen K. speaking on behalf of the students. After the two ribbon cuttings, the students streamed into their new high school, eager to explore the facility.

Letter from the Headmaster
Opportunity Time
Welcome back to Shorecrest!
Even though there have been teachers working on curriculum and setting up classrooms all summer long and even though there have been students involved in one or more of the 70 summer programs we offered during June and July, I am ready for school to start.
During the summer I started seeing an interesting "trend" with some of my favorite writers. They were noting that successful people and organizations do not use circumstances for an excuse not to excel. Jim Collins, author of the book and leader of the Good to Great research team, notes that many of the most successful companies thrived when others collapsed although they were all experiencing similar circumstances. Being optimistic is important. Being committed to a vision regardless of the circumstances is even more important.
Shorecrest is first and foremost a college preparatory school. At the same time we are an independent business. Our school, like every business and family, is affected by current financial conditions. We will tighten our belt this year like everyone else. But that does not mean this will not be the best year we have ever experienced. To the contrary, I fully expect the faculty and parents to unite more than ever before to ensure that our Shorecrest students are able to take advantage of every opportunity available at our school. The School-Parent partnership is dependent upon the commitment of teacher and parents to work in the best interest of our children. During our pre-planning week, all teachers and staff reflected on how we can best support our students and their families. |
We believe the membership element of the new Shorecrest website will provide parents with increased access to programs and student information. As with any membership program, parents will need to engage in a sign-up process. I believe this enhanced communication tool will meet many of the requests parents have expressed in the past year. We will review the new system during the general meeting at each of the four Back-to-School Nights.
The opening of Landy Hall, construction of the new Seventh and Eighth Grade Center, the school-wide focus on writing and brain research, the initiation of the Leadership program in the Upper Division, and our ongoing efforts with Leading Today, Building for Tomorrow–The Campaign for Shorecrest, are just a few of the exciting and important developments we will share this school year.
At the 2008 Commencement exercises, Valedictorian Blake Frieman reminded all of us that Shorecrest's mission is to provide our students with opportunities to grow intellectually and morally, to find artistic fulfillment, to achieve physical fitness and to develop their sense of responsibility to our local and global communities. He went on to say that while the school provided these things, it was the obligation of the students to take advantage of the opportunities. As we begin this new school year, I ask all teachers, parents and students to join me in working together to take full advantage of the outstanding educational opportunities offered at Shorecrest. I look forward to sharing this exciting year with all of you.
Cheers! |

Shorecrest Parent Association membership initiative
Are you a member of the Shorecrest Parent Association (SPA)? If you have a child enrolled at Shorecrest, then you are a SPA member! SPA meets monthly and is a great way to get to know other parents and learn about what is happening in our school. You can become an active member of the Shorecrest school community by volunteering through SPA and attending the monthly meetings. Make a difference in your child's school life through participating in SPA!
And to make it even more fun, the SPA Executive Board is pleased announce the 2008-2009 SPA Membership Initiative.
- If you are a new family at Shorecrest, welcome, and we invite you to become a part of the initiative. You can start by attending our first SPA meeting on September 9th.
- If you are returning to Shorecrest and you have not been attending the Shorecrest Parent Association meetings, then you are in for a treat! Please mark your calendar to attend the SPA meeting on Sept 9th!
- If you have been attending the SPA meetings, a huge thank you is in order and you are also in for a treat. We look forward to seeing you on Sept 9th.
So what is this SPA membership initiative? By attending the monthly SPA meetings and related SPA events, you will earn a chance to win the SPA $1000 Tuition Giveaway. For each meeting you attend, you will earn a chance! This tuition giveaway will be awarded at the SPA December meeting, and another $1000 will be awarded at the SPA May meeting. (Please note that the SPA tuition giveaway is not transferable and the award will be paid directly to the school's finance department from the SPA Treasurer in the giveaway winner's name.)
Additionally, your SPA Board has guaranteed to hold our monthly meetings in "59" minutes or less! If they run over at any SPA meeting, you earn a second chance at the $1000 tuition giveaway!
And last but not least, at the end of each meeting, we will award attendance reward prizes just for coming! These reward prizes will range from a Spiritwear T-shirt to SPA Bucks vouchers to be used at the Book Fair. Keep reading E-Bytes to learn the reward prize each month. For September 9th, the reward prizes are an additional School Directory (you can really never have too many), vouchers for a Spiritwear T-shirt (for your kids to wear on Green and Gold Day), and an individual school picture packet!
Be a part of an exciting year with the Shorecrest Parent Association. Our parent association is only as strong as the families who participate, so make SPA stronger by becoming involved.
You will receive your SPA membership card in the next Shorecrest mailing. Please note that it will have the dates of all SPA meetings listed. Your membership card is also your written guarantee of a "59" minute or less SPA meeting. We feel so sure about our promise to you that we are putting it in writing!
Look for your SPA membership card in the mail, read E-Bytes weekly for the latest about the SPA initiative, and we'll see you at the Sept. 9th SPA meeting.
If you have any questions before the Sept. 9th meeting, feel free to contact Nikki McQueen, SPA President at nmcqueen@ tampabay.rr.com or Jean Johnston, SPA Membership Chair at jeanj@tampabay.rr.com .
| Welcome to Shorecrest!
I hope you enjoy the first issue of E-Bytes for the 2008-09 school year. Every Friday, E-Bytes will have lots of information about each division, athletics, arts, service activities and the parent association as well as photos and videos to accompany the articles. Please don't forget to e-mail me about student achievements, as we love to be able to recognize our students in the Three Cheers for... section.
I would also like to invite students to become more involved with E-Bytes. In future weeks, I will be giving you information about students submitting photographs of school events or writing an article for this publication.
We have many exciting changes on campus this year with the completion of our beautiful Landy Hall building and construction taking place on the Seventh and Eighth Grade Center. We also have a new website that was generously donated by Shorecrest alumni and parents Bill Stover, Jr. and Hutch Craig. Within this website, there is a networking ability so that we can all communicate a bit more easily! We hope that you will be pleased with all of the features that the site offers. More information about the website will be presented at each Back-to-School night.
If you have any questions about E-Bytes, please do not hesitate to contact me at dwhittle@shorecrest.org or my direct line 727.456.7509.
Here's to an excellent school year!

Three Cheers for...
• Kindergartener Julia L., who won a poetry contest for five to seven-year-olds at the Columbus Zoo while in Ohio. The zoo is celebrating the year of the frog, so the theme of the poem was frogs.
My Frog
I have a frog
His name is Ted
He loves to hop
On top of my head.
He loves to eat flies
In a dish on my head
And he likes to hop
On top of my bed.
He sleeps in my bed
Every night.
I don't like it one bit
Because it's too tight!
• Sophomores Joelle J. Leah A., and Rachael K., who represented their group-exhibit team at the National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland in June.
They won ninth place in the national results for their topic on Emmeline Pankhurst. Many congratulations for a superb job!
• Seventh grader Rachel A., who co-hosted a live podcast of Mr. Media Interviews with her father. They interviewed Carolyn Lawrence, the voice of "Sandy Cheeks" on "Spongebob Squarepants" and "Cindy Vortex" on The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius." She will also co-host the show on Tuesday, August 26 at 4:00 p.m. and interview the writer and two cartoonists behind "Zits" and "Baby Blues," which each appear in more than 1,000 newspapers around the world including the St. Petersburg Times.
• Last year's fifth grade Shorecrest students who are featured on the SPCA Tampa Bay website. The site shows photos from last year's visit and acknowledges the many in-kind gifts donated to the animals. Go to this website to see the photos!

Varsity Cheerleaders shine at camp
The Varsity Cheerleaders went to cheerleading camp this summer, where they competed against other schools, learned a lot of new cheers and dances, and had time to bond as a team. They stayed at the University of South Florida for three nights and received blue ribbons for each of their routines. They were also awarded a spirit stick every night.
Sophomores Leah A. and Lisa K. were chosen as all-stars for the camp. This is quite an honor since they competed against many other cheerleaders, most of them seniors and juniors. Way to go, girls! On the last day of camp, they won the "Team" award! Coach Artze commented, "They were awesome. It's going to be a great year!"
Varsity Football finishes two-a-days
The Varsity Football team finished their two-a-day practice sessions last Friday as they prepare for the upcoming season. Coach Hayford is pleased with the effort and enthusiasm of the team. Leading the Chargers this year are seniors Jack S., Jas B., Evan J., Cody T., Toms B., Rob P., Stephen M., and Jordan C. They will travel to Disney Wild World of Sports on Friday, August 29 to play Calvary Christian at 5:30 p.m. in the Kick-off Classic game.
The team has been practicing hard and are ready to represent Shorecrest on the gridiron. So far the only thing that has stopped the Chargers has been Hurricane Fay!
Middle Division Football is ready for season
As the Shorecrest Middle Division Football team began practice this summer, many wondered how they would fill the holes left from graduating eighteen eighth graders from last season's very successful team. The answer... with an imposing offensive and defensive line, leadership, and hard work. That's right, it appears the MD Chargers are not rebuilding, they are reloading, and their goals are set very high for this season.
The MD Charger Football season opens at Lakeland Christian on Thursday, September 18, followed by their first home game on September 25 against cross-town rival Northside Christian.
Come on out and support the MD Chargers as they begin their quest to be the team to beat in the Middle Division this year.
Fourth and fifth grade after-school sports
This coming school year, Shorecrest is proud to offer our fourth and fifth graders the opportunity to participate in a year-round, after school sports program. The program will build upon skills developed in physical education while preparing them for Middle Division interscholastic athletics. Sessions will consist of skill introduction and refinement, as well as competitive game play. Everyone is welcome, and no experience is necessary.

JV Volleyball team
The JV Volleyball team is working hard and learning a new offense with two new setters. They are looking forward to their first game on Sept 2 vs. Bradenton Christian at home. Kathie Newton has come out of retirement to coach the team. Carlie Kearney, our new assistant coach, brings experience, height, and skill to their practices. The team is made up of eight returning sophomores, one ninth grader, and three eighth graders.
Attention, Shorecrest boys in sixth through twelfth grades
Swim and dive season has started, and we are looking for more guys to join the team. You do not have to be a great swimmer or diver. Over the past years some of our soccer, baseball, and basketball players have found this to be a great way to stay in shape in the off-season. If you are playing another club sport, we can try to work around your games and practices. Practices are 3:30-5:00 Monday-Friday at Northshore Pool. The water is great. Discover if there is some Michael Phelps in you! Contact Coach McClenathan at 244-0657 or Coach Nardozzi at 452-3893.
