Letter from the HeadmasterThe Excitement of a New Year
The new cycle has started. On Monday, the new faculty and staff started orientation week, and the full faculty and staff joined them on Tuesday. The fall athletic teams are preparing for their seasons, the maintenance staff is scrambling to address our needs and wishes, and the plans and goals that were formulated last spring and developed over the summer are being fine-tuned. We look forward to the arrival of our students and parents because our work transforms into our careers with the arrival of our students. During pre-planning week, the faculty and staff will finalize plans to make this year special and meaningful for their students. There is a buzz on the Shorecrest campus. The renovation of the Science and Technology Building and the foundation work for Landy Hall are impressive. Enrollment and spirits are both high. I have encouraged the faculty to focus on an independent school study on schools of integrity. We also continue to focus on the attributes described in Good to Great. Although we can be very proud of our past accomplishments and, most importantly, the accomplishments of our students, we know that greatness requires constant focus and the desire for continued progress. I am excited to begin my third year at Shorecrest. As one might expect, my professional dedication to the school started when I accepted my position. With each year, my emotional passion for the school is strengthened. Shorecrest is important to the children, parents and faculty who work together. It is important to the alumni and those past parents who labored to develop the wonderful reputation and family atmosphere we enjoy today. Shorecrest is important to St. Petersburg. We provide the highest quality independent education to families in this community. We are saying to each other, and I say to parents and students "Expect the Best." We look forward to the arrival of students and parents. Together we can make this the best year for our students and their teachers. Welcome Back and Cheers! Mike Murphy, Headmaster |

New Teachers at ShorecrestWe would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new faculty and staff members at Shorecrest. We are glad that you are here! The Middle Division has three new faculty members: Michael McCarthy, Sarah Moebius, and Brian Marchetti.
The Upper Division has two new faces this year: Chris Powers and Charlie Hart. |

On behalf of the Shorecrest Parent Association (SPA) I would like to welcome back all of our students from summer vacation. I hope that the summer break was as exciting and adventurous as the coming school year will be. I also would like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new students and their families to the Shorecrest community.
The goal of SPA is to broaden and enhance the Shorecrest experience for students and parents via volunteering, fundraising, and a variety of educational experiences. Our mission also includes ensuring the maintenance of the fine communication lines that already exist with Shorecrest Headmaster Mike Murphy and his fine staff.
Although all volunteer committee chair positions are filled, there still exist many opportunities to participate in such activities as Fall Festival, Holiday Food Drive, Helping Hands, and Greenery amongst many others. Our goal for the coming academic year is to increase parental participation in SPA and its numerous endeavors. To that end, we will be offering guest lecturers on a variety of topics that will enhance the educational, social and philanthropic experience of the entire Shorecrest community.
SPA sponsored events will be continuously updated on the Shorecrest web site. Feel free to contact Nikki McQueen (Vice President), Stacy Gloer (Treasurer), Charmaine Carter, MD (Secretary), Monique Roberts (Ways and Means), or myself in order to provide you with support and enhance the educational experiences of our children. I wish you all a healthy, productive and fulfilling year. Go Chargers!

President, Shorecrest Parent Association
On Thursday evening Headmaster Mike Murphy welcomed new families to the Shorecrest community at the annual welcome dinner. The tables, decorated with textbooks, apples and balloons, were arranged so that parents could meet other parents in their grade levels. Joining the group were the division heads and other administrators who answered last-minute questions; representatives from the Shorecrest Parent Association and the Booster Club; several Shorecrest Parent Ambassadors; and Julie Klavans, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Mike Murphy gave heartfelt thanks to Susan Wehrmann and Gayle Horden for organizing the annual dinner, a tradition at Shorecrest since the late '80s. Susan has singlehandedly cooked the meal for the past 12 years, but this is the last year, as her daughter Stephanie will be graduating. Gayle has for many years manned a large group of volunteers to set up and serve the dinner, but she too will be passing the baton to another volunteer in the future. We are grateful for Susan's and Gayle's unfailing loyalty and true spirit of volunteering over many years.
Over 150 new students have joined our school community, some from as far away as Finland, Egypt, Germany, France, Great Britain and Spain. We wish all of our incoming families a successful school year. Welcome to Shorecrest!
A flurry of events - including a visit to the "Home of the Flurry!" - marked the arrival of fifth grade students and parents to the Middle Division. We enjoyed greeting fifth graders at the Locker Day activities.
At this event, fifth graders placed their books and other items in their assigned lockers and met their advisor. After the Locker Day event at the school, fifth grade families were invited to Dairy Queen to welcome new families, reconnect with friends, and enjoy a treat!
A special Fifth Grade Orientation was on the docket for Thursday evening in the Band Room. At this meeting, Dr. Schoolman and Mr. Davis were on hand to offer information and friendly advice for families starting out their Middle Division careers. Members of the fifth grade team have always made it a point to stop in to greet parents on this special evening.
Fifth grade parents will enjoy two September events, a Back-to-School Night on September 4 that includes all Middle Division families in grades 5-8 as well as a special Middle Division Curriculum Night in late September when fifth grade teachers focus on study skills and other tips to set students up for success in the fifth grade.

MBS Direct, our on-line book ordering service, has sent some of you word that a few Middle Division textbooks are on backorder. It seems that some publishers simply did not have enough items in stock. We want to reassure families who currently have backordered texts that we are aware of this problem and that teachers will not hold students responsible for having these books until the books arrive.
Helping doesn't always mean fixing, as we learned Wednesday when Dr. Ellen Porter Honnet met with the Middle Division. She shared current brain research and valid advisory techniques while explaining how listening, truly listening, can sometimes be the best medicine.
Our first reaction as adults is to try to dry the tears of a crying child and offer solutions for the child's situation. However, Dr. Honnet discussed that it is in these difficult moments true growth happens - if we let it happen, if we give the child space to create his/her own solutions.
With a caring adult for support, the child can learn to navigate the unpleasant feelings and experience some self-discovery along the way. This is what our Middle Division Advisory program offers every child: further opportunities to grow morally and develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and others.
We are counting down the days until our students join us for the new school year! Our after-school study hall will begin the very first day of school, Tuesday, August 21. Any Middle Division student may attend the study hall with parent permission.
Hours of operation will be from 3:15 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 3:15 until 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. The Study Hall will include study time, library time, snack time, a short recess break, and time to check agendas, get started on homework assignments, and go over upcoming tests and quizzes. We will be in both Mrs. Bassford's room and Mrs. Jones' room when you arrive to pick up your children.
The charge for this service is $5 from 3:15-4:00, and $5 from 4:00 to 5:00. This includes the daily snack, and parents are billed monthly. Please call Mrs. Dattilo in the Middle Division Office for more information or to sign up for Study Hall.
We also would like you to know that in the Middle Division a lunch study hall is available for our students. On Mondays through Thursdays students in grades seven and eight may eat lunch and get a head start on homework by coming to Mrs. Jarvis' room in the Sher Center and students in grades five and six are invited on Fridays. There is no charge for this added value to a Shorecrest education. This will begin on Monday, August 27.
After the school year gets underway, members of our National Honor Society (NHS) will be joining us in study hall to serve as mentors/tutors to those in attendance. This is a win-win situation for all involved and a wonderful link to our Upper Division.
The Grade 11 Parent Social has been changed to Saturday, November 3.
Interrupting their summer vacation, dedicated Crestviews students Donna C., Bekka G., Amanda E., and Edie B. (from Mr. Napodano's class) attended a special Yearbook Conference in Orlando.

More than 400 students from around Florida participated. They learned the newest trends in design and the technology required to incorporate their ideas into the yearbook.
Although vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening is required by the State of Florida, the Pinellas County Health Department does not extend its screening programs to private school students.
For this reason, we ask that students entering Kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and seventh grades provide a school physical form which includes vision and hearing screening. Physical forms for students entering seventh grade should include scoliosis screening as well. All school physicals should be dated less than one year before the beginning of the new school year.
Returning students ordinarily do not require any additional immunizations after Kindergarten until seventh grade. The seventh-grade immunization form should include an adult tetanus/diphtheria booster in addition to other age-appropriate immunizations and must be signed by the doctor for seventh grade entry.
To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, students are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that this year's physical be taken after May 15, 2007.
Seventh grade students who are having a sports physical may ask their doctors to include vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening information on the sports physical form in order to satisfy the state screening requirement discussed above.
Thank you,
Marie Confident, R.N.

When she returns home, she will have a monthly blog on the Discovery Science Connection Web site teaching other teachers how to use inquiry learning and virtual labs to enhance their science instruction.
• Allegra K., who went to London with her grandparents over the summer.

Welcome back to school! I have missed you so much. I can't wait to hear about your summer adventures and learn about the favorite books you read.
Everyone knows I care deeply about reading and writing. This summer my reading spanned books for all ages from William Steig's Amos & Borus to an adult book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin. And my reading affected my writing. I loved seeing words used in new ways. Steig used the description the "savage sea" and Mortenson described knowing a place "encyclopedically" well. In each case what do you think the authors meant? Remember to tell me when you see me.
Love,
Mrs. Jennings

The kindergarteners enjoyed a Saturday morning before school tie-dye party. They are all set with their attire for Spirit Day! Thank you to our terrific volunteers Elizabeth Samuelson, Karen Quilty, Cybille Scott, and Karen Thomas for organizing this event.
