Getting the Year Off to a Good Start

Early Childhood parents gathered in the Janet Root Theatre on Thursday evening for orientation. It was the night for them to have the policies and procedures of the ECC explained and to have any questions answered. They had an opportunity to hear more about the Flik lunch program and about the new emergency notification system. The meeting ended with a few tears as the parents listened to the annual reading of The Kissing Hand.

Early Childhood

Thank you, EC Parent Ambassadors

The Alpha and Junior Kindergarten Parent Ambassadors did a wonderful job providing opportunities for our new and returning parents and children to get to know each other. There were events at homes, at school, and at a few other locations. The playground sessions were especially beneficial in helping the children acclimate to their new surroundings.

Pictures and Forms

We need an individual picture of each child and one of their family. We also need all of the forms completed and returned. If you have not yet sent these things to us, please do so by Monday. If you have any questions, call the EC office at 456-7541.

Middle Division Golf

  • Tryouts Begin Tuesday, August 21

Practice/tryouts will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:15 starting August 21. Coach Every will pick up golfers on campus around 3:00 and transport them to and from campus. The season is eight weeks long, and matches begin on September 5.

Only nine golfers will be accepted to the team due to course and space limitations. Please remember that all students who plan to participate need to have their physicals.

Sports Physicals and Parent Consent and Release Forms

Don't forget to get your summer physical appointments with your family physician now. To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, you are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that this year's physical be taken after April 1, 2007 (link to form).

The FHSAA also requires that every school must have on file a parental consent and release form (green sheet) before a student-athlete can participate in any form of physical conditioning regardless of when such conditioning occurs. These forms are required of any athlete who participates on a team, works out in the weight room, or does off-season conditioning. You can download these forms above.

If you are an incoming sixth grader, a new student to Shorecrest, or have never played on a Shorecrest team, you will need to turn in a copy of your birth certificate to the athletic office to establish eligibility with the state.

Athletes will not be allowed to practice until all their paperwork has been turned into the athletic office.

Fall Sports 2007 Information (pdf)

2007 Fall Sports Information

A fall sports information sheet was included in the mailing with your report cards. Also included were a FHSAA physical form and a green insurance form that will have to be filled out and returned before practicing a fall sport.

Please send these completed forms to the Athletic office this summer so that your athlete will be able to participate when practice begins. The fall sports information, the physical form, and the insurance form are on the website for you to download if needed. Please call the Athletic Office with any questions (456-7538 or 522-2111 ext. 147 or 222).

Volunteering

With the start of the new school year, it's time to get the volunteer efforts organized. For all of you that have sent in your volunteer sheets, thank you. If you have not yet turned in a Volunteer Opportunities Form (Microsoft Word format) (PDF), there's still time. Please send it in today to the Admissions Office.

Should you have any questions, please give me a call at (727) 456-7511 or e-mail Lwikholm@shorecrest.org

Make a Difference for Shorecrest

For the past five years, The Big Event has raised over $100,000 a year to support the education of Shorecrest students. This week, past chairs and SPA leaders met to discuss the future of the Big Event and fund raising efforts led by parents. There is consensus on a few important areas:

  1. Parent support is very important.
  2. Great relationships are formed while working on school events.
  3. A social event for parents from all grades helps build a stronger community.
  4. Fund raising events should be focused on raising funds.

There is an open question as to whether we should have a Big Event or try a new activity in the coming year. The decision cannot be made until an individual or a team of parent leaders volunteer to work with SPA and the administration on an event.

In the coming year, there will be a Shorecrest staff member designated to work with SPA and parent volunteers on fund raising and social events.

If you would like to chair, co-chair or help with the SPA fund raising activity for 2007-2008, please contact Monique Roberts, Nikki McQueen or Mike Murphy.

Letter from the Headmaster

The Excitement of a New Year

Mike Murphy

The new cycle has started. On Monday, the new faculty and staff started orientation week, and the full faculty and staff joined them on Tuesday. The fall athletic teams are preparing for their seasons, the maintenance staff is scrambling to address our needs and wishes, and the plans and goals that were formulated last spring and developed over the summer are being fine-tuned. We look forward to the arrival of our students and parents because our work transforms into our careers with the arrival of our students.

During pre-planning week, the faculty and staff will finalize plans to make this year special and meaningful for their students. There is a buzz on the Shorecrest campus. The renovation of the Science and Technology Building and the foundation work for Landy Hall are impressive. Enrollment and spirits are both high.

I have encouraged the faculty to focus on an independent school study on schools of integrity. We also continue to focus on the attributes described in Good to Great. Although we can be very proud of our past accomplishments and, most importantly, the accomplishments of our students, we know that greatness requires constant focus and the desire for continued progress.

I am excited to begin my third year at Shorecrest. As one might expect, my professional dedication to the school started when I accepted my position. With each year, my emotional passion for the school is strengthened. Shorecrest is important to the children, parents and faculty who work together. It is important to the alumni and those past parents who labored to develop the wonderful reputation and family atmosphere we enjoy today. Shorecrest is important to St. Petersburg. We provide the highest quality independent education to families in this community. We are saying to each other, and I say to parents and students "Expect the Best."

We look forward to the arrival of students and parents. Together we can make this the best year for our students and their teachers.

  Welcome Back and Cheers!

  Mike Murphy, Headmaster

New Teachers at Shorecrest

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new faculty and staff members at Shorecrest. We are glad that you are here! Below is one new faculty member from each division. To view all the new faculty member photos and introductions, click here.

In Early Childhood, we have two new teachers and one who is returning.

Nancy StoweJerry Spanos will be teaching Junior Kindergarten this year. Although she is new to our teaching staff, she is a familiar face to Shorecrest! Mrs. Spanos was a substitute teacher last year and she has three children at Shorecrest: John, who will be in third grade; David, who will be in seventh grade; and Stephen who will be in eleventh grade. Mrs. Spanos has seven years of teaching experience. She has her B.A. in education, specializing in early childhood education, from the University of Florida and her master's degree in education from Cameron University in Oklahoma. Mrs. Spanos enjoys running and all types of athletics in her free time.

Jessie AcostaIn Lower Division, we would like to welcome Jessi Acosta, who will be the Kindergarten Assistant for Mrs. Minke. Mrs. Acosta has two children at Shorecrest: Alexander, who will be in second grade, and Katerina, who will be in fifth grade. She has been a Shorecrest parent for three years. Mrs. Acosta is originally from Panama, and she has traveled extensively with her husband Orlando who is a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. While in Oklahoma, she taught at a Head Start program and also volunteered as a Spanish teacher for Kindergarten through fourth grade. Mrs. Acosta enjoys music, long walks and playing board games with her family. She is "very happy to be a part of the Shorecrest family."

The Middle Division has three new faculty members: Michael McCarthy, Sarah Moebius, and Brian Marchetti.

Michael McCarthyMr. McCarthy will be teaching music and hails from Cork, Ireland. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, and he also has a BFA from Stephen's College. Mr. McCarthy is a world-class singer who played Inspector Javert in the Broadway production of Les Miserables and also in London's West End. He and Colm Wilkinson performed Les Mis in Shanghai, and as a result of its success, western shows are now being produced in Mandarin in China. He is looking forward to working with the eighth graders on some songs from the musicals "Blood Brothers" and "Me and My Girl" as well as some Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. His wife, Stephanie, is also a music teacher and will be substituting when Mr. McCarthy is performing abroad. They have a son, Cían, who will begin the Alpha program this year. When not singing, Mr. McCarthy enjoys walking, swimming and playing piano. He instructed at Shorecrest this summer with Mr. Leavengood's Pro Theatre Prep program and says, "The kids I met during the summer made me want to be here. They were a credit to the school."

The Upper Division has two new faces this year: Chris Powers and Charlie Hart.

Chris PowersMr. Powers will be teaching eleventh grade honors English as well as assisting students in the college counseling office with essay writing and scholarships. The son of Upper Division Spanish teacher Cary Powers, Mr. Powers graduated from Shorecrest in 2000 and then went to Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania where he received a B.A. in English Literature and philosophy. After college, he went to the island of Pohnpei, located seven degrees north of the equator, and taught English to 136 students. After returning to the States, he taught humanities at Country Day School in Largo, but he is thrilled to be back at Shorecrest. "It is good to feel like I am back at home!" Chris also loves music and plays a number of instruments, including the bass guitar, and he is currently recording a solo record of indie music.

SPA letterhead

On behalf of the Shorecrest Parent Association (SPA) I would like to welcome back all of our students from summer vacation. I hope that the summer break was as exciting and adventurous as the coming school year will be. I also would like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new students and their families to the Shorecrest community.

SPAThe goal of SPA is to broaden and enhance the Shorecrest experience for students and parents via volunteering, fundraising, and a variety of educational experiences. Our mission also includes ensuring the maintenance of the fine communication lines that already exist with Shorecrest Headmaster Mike Murphy and his fine staff.

Although all volunteer committee chair positions are filled, there still exist many opportunities to participate in such activities as Fall Festival, Holiday Food Drive, Helping Hands, and Greenery amongst many others. Our goal for the coming academic year is to increase parental participation in SPA and its numerous endeavors. To that end, we will be offering guest lecturers on a variety of topics that will enhance the educational, social and philanthropic experience of the entire Shorecrest community.

SPA sponsored events will be continuously updated on the Shorecrest web site. Feel free to contact Nikki McQueen (Vice President), Stacy Gloer (Treasurer), Charmaine Carter, MD (Secretary), Monique Roberts (Ways and Means), or myself in order to provide you with support and enhance the educational experiences of our children. I wish you all a healthy, productive and fulfilling year. Go Chargers!

New Parents Dinner

On Thursday evening Headmaster Mike Murphy welcomed new families to the Shorecrest community at the annual welcome dinner. The tables, decorated with textbooks, apples and balloons, were arranged so that parents could meet other parents in their grade levels. Joining the group were the division heads and other administrators who answered last-minute questions; representatives from the Shorecrest Parent Association and the Booster Club; several Shorecrest Parent Ambassadors; and Julie Klavans, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

New Parents Dinner
New families were welcomed to Shorecrest at a dinner in the Crisp Gymnasium Thursday evening. More photos

Mike Murphy gave heartfelt thanks to Susan Wehrmann and Gayle Horden for organizing the annual dinner, a tradition at Shorecrest since the late '80s. Susan has singlehandedly cooked the meal for the past 12 years, but this is the last year, as her daughter Stephanie will be graduating. Gayle has for many years manned a large group of volunteers to set up and serve the dinner, but she too will be passing the baton to another volunteer in the future. We are grateful for Susan's and Gayle's unfailing loyalty and true spirit of volunteering over many years.

Over 150 new students have joined our school community, some from as far away as Finland, Egypt, Germany, France, Great Britain and Spain. We wish all of our incoming families a successful school year. Welcome to Shorecrest!

Middle Division

Fifth Grade Receives Royal Welcome to the Middle Division!

A flurry of events - including a visit to the "Home of the Flurry!" - marked the arrival of fifth grade students and parents to the Middle Division. We enjoyed greeting fifth graders at the Locker Day activities.

At this event, fifth graders placed their books and other items in their assigned lockers and met their advisor. After the Locker Day event at the school, fifth grade families were invited to Dairy Queen to welcome new families, reconnect with friends, and enjoy a treat!

A special Fifth Grade Orientation was on the docket for Thursday evening in the Band Room. At this meeting, Dr. Schoolman and Mr. Davis were on hand to offer information and friendly advice for families starting out their Middle Division careers. Members of the fifth grade team have always made it a point to stop in to greet parents on this special evening.

Fifth grade parents will enjoy two September events, a Back-to-School Night on September 4 that includes all Middle Division families in grades 5-8 as well as a special Middle Division Curriculum Night in late September when fifth grade teachers focus on study skills and other tips to set students up for success in the fifth grade.

Middle Division Textbook Order Update

MBS Direct, our on-line book ordering service, has sent some of you word that a few Middle Division textbooks are on backorder. It seems that some publishers simply did not have enough items in stock. We want to reassure families who currently have backordered texts that we are aware of this problem and that teachers will not hold students responsible for having these books until the books arrive.

Really Helping

Helping doesn't always mean fixing, as we learned Wednesday when Dr. Ellen Porter Honnet met with the Middle Division. She shared current brain research and valid advisory techniques while explaining how listening, truly listening, can sometimes be the best medicine.

Our first reaction as adults is to try to dry the tears of a crying child and offer solutions for the child's situation. However, Dr. Honnet discussed that it is in these difficult moments true growth happens - if we let it happen, if we give the child space to create his/her own solutions.

With a caring adult for support, the child can learn to navigate the unpleasant feelings and experience some self-discovery along the way. This is what our Middle Division Advisory program offers every child: further opportunities to grow morally and develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and others.

After-school Study Hall

We are counting down the days until our students join us for the new school year! Our after-school study hall will begin the very first day of school, Tuesday, August 21. Any Middle Division student may attend the study hall with parent permission.

Hours of operation will be from 3:15 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 3:15 until 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. The Study Hall will include study time, library time, snack time, a short recess break, and time to check agendas, get started on homework assignments, and go over upcoming tests and quizzes. We will be in both Mrs. Bassford's room and Mrs. Jones' room when you arrive to pick up your children.

The charge for this service is $5 from 3:15-4:00, and $5 from 4:00 to 5:00. This includes the daily snack, and parents are billed monthly. Please call Mrs. Dattilo in the Middle Division Office for more information or to sign up for Study Hall.

We also would like you to know that in the Middle Division a lunch study hall is available for our students. On Mondays through Thursdays students in grades seven and eight may eat lunch and get a head start on homework by coming to Mrs. Jarvis' room in the Sher Center and students in grades five and six are invited on Fridays. There is no charge for this added value to a Shorecrest education. This will begin on Monday, August 27.

After the school year gets underway, members of our National Honor Society (NHS) will be joining us in study hall to serve as mentors/tutors to those in attendance. This is a win-win situation for all involved and a wonderful link to our Upper Division.

Summer Immunizations & Physicals

School Physicals

Although vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening is required by the State of Florida, the Pinellas County Health Department does not extend its screening programs to private school students.

For this reason, we ask that students entering Kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and seventh grades provide a school physical form which includes vision and hearing screening. Physical forms for students entering seventh grade should include scoliosis screening as well. All school physicals should be dated less than one year before the beginning of the new school year.

Immunizations

Returning students ordinarily do not require any additional immunizations after Kindergarten until seventh grade. The seventh-grade immunization form should include an adult tetanus/diphtheria booster in addition to other age-appropriate immunizations and must be signed by the doctor for seventh grade entry.

Sports Physicals

To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, students are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that this year's physical be taken after May 15, 2007.

Seventh grade students who are having a sports physical may ask their doctors to include vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening information on the sports physical form in order to satisfy the state screening requirement discussed above.

     Thank you,
     Marie Confident, R.N.

Lower Division

Dear Girls and Boys,

Welcome back to school! I have missed you so much. I can't wait to hear about your summer adventures and learn about the favorite books you read.

Everyone knows I care deeply about reading and writing. This summer my reading spanned books for all ages from William Steig's Amos & Borus to an adult book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin. And my reading affected my writing. I loved seeing words used in new ways. Steig used the description the "savage sea" and Mortenson described knowing a place "encyclopedically" well. In each case what do you think the authors meant? Remember to tell me when you see me.

     Love,
