Grade Eight Parents and Students - See What Lies Ahead!

Save the Date: Evening of Nov. 13

Eighth graders and their parents are invited to the Janet Root Theatre at 7 p.m. to learn about the Upper Division. Faculty and students will be on hand to talk about high school courses, clubs and activities, the college counseling process, as well as answer questions. We will also share plans for the new Upper Division building. After all, this year's eighth graders will be the inaugural class in Landy Hall!

Virtual Mr. Wizard Visits Seventh Grade Life Science

MythBusterOn Tuesday, the seventh graders in Mrs. Belt's A block participated with other schools across the nation in an interactive Discovery webinar with the new Mr. Wizard IV (aka Steven Jacobs, one of the Myth Buster writers). During this Discovery Connect event, Mr. Wizard led the seventh graders through an entertaining, interactive experience that was designed to make them think like scientists.

science
Mental floss?

The students were given a balloon, a penny, a Ziploc bag of water, and a pencil. Over the computer and speakerphone, Mr. Wizard talked to the students about certain scientific properties and inventions. Next, Mr. Wizard led the students in a series of experiments in real time via the web. The students were asked to predict what would happen in the experiments, and then the class typed an instant message to Mr. Wizard to let him know what the class predicted would happen next. Mr. Wizard then discussed the class predictions, and of course, the students carried out the experiments.

pencil experimentIn one of the students' favorite experiments, students were asked to stick a sharpened pencil through a plastic bag full of water, piercing both sides.  The students were challenged to think about what would happen and why. Could more than one pencil go through the bag without spilling any water? The pictures of the seventh graders show the amazing results.

The webinar was an excellent example of how technology can enhance higher level thinking skills and be fun at the same time. Our science class can't wait for another chance to think like scientists.

People to People Program Features Three Shorecrest Student Ambassadors

Three Middle Division students represented both Shorecrest and the United States last summer in two separate People to People summer exchange programs. Seventh graders Courtney C. and Shannon M., along with eighth grader Morgan D., traveled to Australia with fellow US students from Alaska, Kansas, Utah and other states. The three girls had wonderful and memorable experiences, and each continues to maintain friendships with their Australian hosts and with fellow US students from their traveling groups.

Australia

The People to People program is selective, with interviews and questionnaires designed to determine if a student is well-suited to serving as a representative of the United States abroad.

For Courtney and Shannon, experiencing a homestay on a working farm was a highlight. For Courtney, "Feeding the kangaroos and holding the koalas was amazing." Shannon vividly recalls "seeing wild swamp wallabies and other wild creatures" during the trip. For both, the trip to the Great Barrier Reef was unforgettable. They also fondly recall a visit to a school in Melbourne.

The girls traveled during their summer break, but in Australia, it was winter. For Morgan, flying into Sydney during the day offered a clear and sunny view. It turned out that aside from her time in the Australian Outback - or desert area - this was the only sun she would see. Like Shannon and Courtney, Morgan had a fantastic experience, visiting the Sydney Opera House and staying with a family in the small town of Mosmon. She went to school with her host, where students would ask her to say words like "mom" which they found entertaining due to her American "foreign" accent. For Morgan, a highlight was the desert, where she learned how to make baskets, saw dingoes and wallabies in her outdoor hotel ("They were ten feet away!") and sampled kangaroo tail and green ants.

International exchange programs offer wonderful opportunities for students, and it should be noted that the girls traveled to the other side of the world without their parents. All three girls recommend People to People and are planning to travel to the British Isles next summer. They all stressed, however, that bringing the right stuff - a raincoat, a sweatshirt and items on the packing list - is critical to confronting the cool, damp Southeastern Australian winter.

We are proud of Courtney, Shannon, and Morgan, student ambassadors who represented Shorecrest and America abroad.

Mind the Bounce

In eighth grade Algebra 1, students studied the relationship between the drop height of a ping pong ball versus the height of the rebound bounce. They created linear equations and scatter plots based on the data they collected.

calculating

Students used the equations they created to make predictions about the measurement of the rebound height at different drop heights and then tested the accuracy of their equations. Overall, it was a fun day that brought some important algebra concepts to life!

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables
Lower and Middle Division students enjoyed a splendid performance of Anne of Green Gables.

Upper Division

Spanish Club

During the month of October, the Upper Division Spanish Club sold candy bags on campus that were delivered during Advisory on October 30. Blake F. and Nick S. were the chairs for this project.

Spanish Club

Students who bought a candy bag wrote a note that was then attached to the bag before the delivery to the lucky recipient. Students, teachers, administrators and staff received candy bags, and 795 bags were sold.

The money raised goes toward helping an Hispanic girl named Samantha, who has leukemia, visit her family in El Salvador. The UD Spanish Club is proud to be a member of the Kids Who Care network of the Children's Dream Fund.

Key Club Activities

Clean Up

On Friday, Nov. 2, a group of ten Upper Division students, along with Key Club sponsor Mr. Ma, participated in Key Club's Holiday Hope event on Snell Isle.

ASAP, a non-profit organization that raises awareness for the homeless people in the St. Petersburg area, held a fund-raising event that evening. These Shorecrest students were in charge of the clean-up for the event between 10-11 p.m. They moved furniture, cleaned trash cans and broke down the tables set-ups, and so on. They volunteered with great joy and compassion. Special thanks to committee chair Bronwyn G.

Dennis Shea, one of the board members for ASAP and a Shorecrest parent, said that "ASAP really appreciates the help the Key Club is giving us. It is a great help to making our fundraiser a success."

Feeding the Teachers

food for teachers

Key Club celebrated its National Key Club Week by wearing the cool club T-shirts, club pins and showing appreciation to all the Upper Division faculty. BrittanyKey Clubbers brought in baked cookies, cakes and all other goodies that made a fare during break for all the teachers.

Key Club president Brittany H. baked the heart shaped assorted cookies with different flavors - peanuts, chocolate and raisin, and decorated the cookies beautifully on a big plate. All teachers felt really appreciated and enjoyed the goodies that the Key Clubbers brought in.

Kindergarten Presents in Chicago

The kindergarten team Joanne Minke, Tamara Mulkey, Susan Kawalec, and Heather Overton presented at the National Association of Educators of Young Children (NAEYC) this week in Chicago. They shared their classroom tradition of making individual memory quilts.

kindergarten team

In addition to explaining the actual procedures and materials needed, they provided colleagues with incredibly rich resources from children's and adult books. Congratulations, kindergarten, for representing Shorecrest and a job well done.

Kids Galore Helping Kids in Darfur

Last year Wendy Drexler's third grade students were impacted by the conditions for children in Darfur and decided they wanted to help. Wendy Drexler's Darfur article was published in the November issue of Leading and Learning with Technology. This is a journal of ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education). Here's a link to the table of contents.

Third Graders Visit the South Florida Museum

The third grade traveled across the Skyway Bridge to the South Florida Museum in Bradenton.

mastodon

Highlights included an imaginary trip to the planets at Bishop Planetarium, a face-to-face meeting with a life-sized mastodon, a trip back in time to dwell among the Tocobaga prehistoric people, and a visit with Snooty the manatee. (Can you believe that manatee is almost 60 years old!) After the tour, the classes enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the Spanish courtyard. The weather could not have been more beautiful.

"What's So Good about Feeling Bad?"

The first graders took a field trip to All Children's Hospital. Through music, dancing, and singing the staff and volunteers put on a show telling about the body's systems and their functions. The students enjoyed the experience, and it was a wonderful culmination to their in depth study of the human body.

Citizen of the Month

Congratulations to our October citizens of the month for the 2007-08 school year:

  • First Grade - Reagan Q.
  • Second Grade - Kyle J.
  • Third Grade - Sam H.
  • Fourth Grade - Petu S.

These students exemplify the life skills we teach and practice here at Shorecrest. Thank you, parents, for instilling these wonderful values in your children. You would be pleased to know that they are modeling what you taught them. Thank you for being partners with us in this most important endeavor.

Fall Bay Area Association of Independent Schools (BAAIS) Meetings

The Fall BAAIS meeting for the Lower Division Heads was hosted by Shorecrest last week. Schools in attendance included St. Paul's, Berkeley, Canterbury, Hillel, and St. Stephen's. Curriculum topics were discussed as well as assessment tools and Extended Day programs.

The Lower Division P.E. coaches also hosted a BAAIS meeting for their colleagues with 18 coaches in attendance. The Lower Division team Amy Pope, Amber Hutton, Woody Every, and Jeff Diedrich had just returned from the Florida Alliance for Physical Education, Health, Recreation, and Dance Conference where they learned many activities to share.

Early Childhood

McShorecrest's Farm!

Last Friday was Farm Day in Alpha, and the children came dressed appropriately for the theme. They had a great time making and playing with animal puppets and wallowing in the "shaving cream mud" using plastic animals.

farmer

Doing farm puzzles and transferring activities and making a piggie snack using bagels, strawberry cream cheese and marshmallows were fun, too. The most unique experience was a simulated milking activity using plastic buckets and rubber gloves filled with white paint that hung from the ceiling!

Learning to Be Healthy Eaters

The Junior Kindergarten students are studying nutrition and are learning how to make wise decisions about what they eat. The planning of their Thanksgiving feast is part of this process, and the children are making sure that their menu includes items from each of the major food groups.

The children enjoy "shopping" in the new grocery store in the Exploratorium but are looking forward to the chance to really shop during next week's trip to Publix.

NAEYC

Beth Uebel, Nicole Carson, and Betty Gootson traveled to Chicago this week to attend the annual conference of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. With over 750 sessions from which to choose, they're looking forward to sharing their new knowledge with the rest of the Early Childhood team when they return.

Message from Mr. Murphy

Pass It On

Headmaster Mike MurphyThere is nothing boring about seeing people perform acts of kindness. One of the national insurance companies has discovered this truth and has produced some uplifting commercials showing people performing acts of kindness in a "pass it on" fashion. One good act begets another.

I have just started reading The Five Minds of the Future by Howard Gardner. Gardner is best known for his work on the theory of multiple intelligences. In his new book, he suggests five dispositions of thought that will be essential for productive life in the 21st century. What has struck me in the opening chapter of the book is Gardner's effort to encourage commitment to local communities even as we are more and more focused on global issues. He does not downplay the importance of world-wide concerns; yet, I am taking away a message to stay focused on the people and places I touch in my everyday life.

In the past week I have observed parents and teachers working on some basic but important tasks to serve the students in our school. They probably will not receive any national recognition for the great teaching and good service to the Shorecrest community, but their work is vitally important. Likewise, the students who have worked for Habitat for Humanity, prepared meals at the Ronald McDonald House and collected Halloween costumes for the YWCA Family Village have clearly had a hands-on impact on our own community. These actions seem age appropriate and genuine. They contribute to the development of character in our students and make our school and local community a better place to live.

Thanksgiving is approaching, and I am thankful for the parents, students, teachers and other colleagues who reach out to enhance the lives of those in our local and Shorecrest community. I hope their good work will continue to create a ripple effect. Kindness, support and generosity are attributes I want all of our students to embrace. Let's pass it on.

Cheers!

Varsity Football Results

The Chargers hosted Northside Christian on Friday night, Nov. 2 and lost 49-21. Hunter T. threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the offense for the night.

football

Defensively, the Chargers were led by Robby T., Daniel W., Matt V., and Jaime Q. The Chargers will finish their season on Friday, Nov. 9 against Academy at the Lakes at home at 7:30.

Middle Division Football

The Shorecrest Middle Division Football team played their final game of the 2007 season on Thursday, Nov. 1, when they hosted the Keswick Crusaders. The Crusaders came out swinging in their opening drive, but the stingy Charger defense dug their heels in and shut down the Crusader advance.

football

As the Charger offense took the field, anchored by their punishing offensive line, running back Alex D. went to work slicing and pounding his way through the Crusader defense. By the end of the game, Alex had amassed 194 yards, which was enough to make him only the second running back in Shorecrest Middle Division history to gain over 1000 yards in a single season (1067 yards).

The Chargers sealed the 36-6 victory with a dominating defensive performance and exceptional special teams play by the Special K's. Shorecrest finished the season 6-2.

Shorecrest Hosts Preseason Girls Basketball Tournament

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Girls Varsity Basketball team beat Osceola High in the first game of the Shorecrest Preseason Tournament. Jasmine C. led all scorers with nineteen points, followed by Sandy L. with ten points, Rachel S. with six points, Natalie S., Allie W., Bronwyn G., and Becky D. with 2 points to round out the scoring. The team played strong defense to lead the way to victory.

Girls Varsity Soccer

The Girls Varsity Soccer team began their season last Friday night, Nov. 2, at Calvary Christian in Clearwater and came away with an 8-0 win! Jenn C. led all scorers with three goals and Rachel W. was right behind her with two goals. Natalie N., Chelsea S., and Lindsay H. each added a goal to the Chargers win.

On Monday afternoon, Nov. 5, the Chargers traveled to Sarasota to play Out of Door Academy. Shorecrest dominated the game, winning 6-0. Jenn C. and Natalee H. each contributed two goals to the win. Serena H. and Rachel W. also scored for the Chargers. Their record now stands at 2-0, and they have shut out both of their opponents.

Football & Cheerleading All Stars Announced

Classical Field Trip

A trip to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota has become an annual event for the students of Latin IA in the Middle Division and Latin I in the Upper Division.

The museum tour is called "A Feast of Myths and Legends." The students see the continuing influence of the Classical world on art and architecture 1,550 to 2,000 years after the original stories were told. The contributions of the Ringling Family to the culture of Florida are housed in a museum that resembles the Roman villa in southern Italy where many of the textbook's stories are set.

This year thirty-seven students in grades seven through ten watched Mars, Venus, Mercury, and others come to life with the brush strokes of Baroque artists. Generous chaperones for this venture were Gina Longino, Laurie Reiskind, and Kathy Brannon.

Service Learning

Holiday Cheer for Troops

Sophomore Ciara K. has organized an effort to collect items for Holiday Cheer Packages for U. S. troops overseas. You can choose from the list (click here) and drop off your items in the boxes in the Middle and Upper Division offices. The collection will end on Friday, Nov. 16.

Shorecrest is also participating in Postcards from Home once again this year. With the help of Shorecrest parent Kerry Kriseman, 1,000 postcards will carry messages of thanks and holiday wishes from Shorecrest students to the men and women of the U. S. military who won't be home with their families this holiday season.

Eat Lots of Corn at Ribfest

Each ear of corn sold at the Ribfest Roasted Corn Booth will help the Jr. Exchange/Excel Club earn money for their service projects.

Ribfest

About forty Upper Division students will be working there this weekend during the Northeast Exchange Club's Ribfest at Vinoy Park, Friday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 11. The gates are open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Need More Squares

Members of the Shorecrest Yarn Bunch have been busy knitting and crocheting 6"x6" squares that will be joined together to make lap blankets for The Hospice of Pinellas Suncoast. We need 48 squares to make one blanket, and The Hospice has given away nearly 500 blankets since May when their welcome gift basket program began.

If you'd like to contribute a square or enlist the help of a friend or family member who knits or crochets, the Yarn Bunch can use your help.

Please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510 if you have any questions or need any other information about any of these service activities.
