Students and parents of the junior class need to attend the College Night for Juniors on October 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Janet Root Theatre. Please remember to put it on your calendar. This is a required meeting as it officially begins the college process for juniors.
The College Center has assigned homework for junior class parents and students. It can be accessed through the Shorecrest website by clicking on Junior Parent Night Homework.
A case-sensitive user name and password can be found in a letter from Registrar Judy Roberge dated October 9. If you have any questions about your user name or password, you may contact Mrs. Roberge at (727) 522-2111 at extension 140.
Complete list of college representative visits.
If you meet with an academic coach (tutor) and you are going to be absent from school, please contact the academic coach or Jean Carnes by phone or e-mail to let him/her know you will not be attending the tutorial session that day.
If the academic coach comes to Shorecrest to meet with you and you are absent without notification, you will be charged for the session. If you have any questions, please call or e-mail Jean Carnes at 727-456-7528 or jeca@shorecrest.org. Thank you.

On November 8, from 8:30 to 2:30, SPA is hosting nationally known speaker and educator Peter Cobb for a daylong workshop for parent leaders.
There is space for 40 participants. Interested parents who can attend the full session should RSVP to Karen Bruggeman at 727-522-211 X 111.
Click here for more information and the workshop description.
If you have a youngster not currently enrolled at Shorecrest who will be eligible for our Early Childhood Center or Kindergarten next fall, now is the time to apply.
We give priority to our current families, and we don't want you to miss the chance for a spot, so submit your application early! If you have questions about the enrollment process, or to request an application form, call the Admissions Office at 456-7511 or e-mail us at admissions@shorecrest.org, or stop by and pick up an application.
Click here for the November lunch menu.
Too early to begin thinking about the Holidays? Not when it comes to ordering greenery! Please buy a wreath, a swag or a centerpiece. They smell and look wonderful and are a great fund-raiser for the school. The orders are due by Halloween, October 31. Questions? E-mail Sidney Smith.
This year's Book Fair will be held off-campus at the Barnes & Noble across from the Tyrone Square Mall from November 9-18. The hours of the Book Fair will be 9:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
Many wonderful activities have been planned for the Book Fair! On the first evening, Friday, November 9, Curious George will be visiting the store, and on Sunday, November 11, there will be a story time with some very special guest readers:
Also, if you are interested in purchasing a book for a teacher from their wish list, there will be baskets with teachers' names on them in the book store that will have the books teachers requested.
Please make sure to identify yourself as a student, parent, etc. of Shorecrest when you check out as this is the only fundraiser for the library for the year. Barnes & Noble will give a percentage of the purchases directly back to the library fund for any consumables that you buy, whether they are books, calendars, cards, chocolates, gifts, etc.
Internationally known children's author Amy MacDonald will be visiting Shorecrest on November 12. Mrs. MacDonald will speak to students in Early Childhood through grade 4 about being an author, and will discuss her books.
Mrs. MacDonald's books include Rachel Fister's Blister as well as Little Beaver and the Echo and have been on both Parent Magazine's and the New York Times' "Best Children's Books" lists.
A form to purchase a book for Mrs. MacDonald to sign was sent home in the October 11 mailing, as well as put in backpacks. The deadline to return this form to Mrs. Smay is Oct. 22.
Shorecrest Holiday Food and Gift Drive is gearing up! This Shorecrest service project is one of the longest-running service projects that the school undertakes each year. In fact, we are trying to determine just how long Shorecrest has been doing our Holiday Gift/Food drive.
We know it goes back to 1992, but many feel the gift drive has an even longer history than that! Do you know? If so, call Jean at (727) 391-4455.
Look for more information in your child's backpack or school-wide mailing. The dates for collection are November 27 through December 7. Gifts can be dropped off in your child's classroom.
The last day for the gift drop off is Dec 7 by 8:00 a.m. Gifts will be collected and distributed on the morning of Dec. 7 to the Guardian Ad Litem caseworkers.
Volunteers are still needed, so if you want to be a part of a wonderful experience, please email or call Paula Van Law, Beth Rosenbluth or Jean Johnston.
Please see the Parents Page of the website for additional school information.
If you need to change your e-mail address or would like to add additional e-mail addresses, please send your e-mail addresses to the registrar at jroberge@shorecrest.org. Thanks!
If you do not currently receive a weekly e-mail on Fridays notifying you that E-Bytes is updated, please send a request with your name and e-mail address to ebytes@shorecrest.org and we will be happy to add you to the list.
E-Bytes is a collaborative effort of dozens of members of the Shorecrest community.
To submit material to E-Bytes, please send it to Diana Whittle at dwhittle@shorecrest.org and remember to write "For E-Bytes" in the subject line of your message.

Please join us Friday, October 26 for a lyrical morning at our annual Poetry in the Park. We will begin at 8:30 in the center quad of the Lower Division campus. Please feel free to bring a portable chair for comfort.

As an introduction to our unit on farms, the kindergarten classes visited Seminole Vo-Tech farm this week. With Farmer Vickie as our guide, we saw a goat, bunnies, a cow, a rooster and many other animals.

Our favorite farm animal of all was Henry the turkey. He followed us all around the farm! In addition to seeing and petting the animals, we learned much about life on a farm and what farm animals eat, the names of baby animals, and how friendly farm animals are. We love learning about life on a farm!
Ashley Lippincott, Guidance Counselor, performs many crucial roles in the Lower Division. In addition to teaching classes, she is available for counseling individual students and meeting with groups. She is an integral part of the support team for teachers and a wonderful link to our Middle Division where she also has the responsibility of Guidance.
As our fourth graders move up to the Middle Division, they have already formed a relationship with her. Mrs. Lippincott is a life-long learner and attended the Gesell Workshop last week with Mrs. Uebel and Mrs. Gootson and learned a new way to assess a child's development stage.
Please join other second grade parents for a fiesta on Saturday, October 20 at 7:30 at the Quicks' hacienda.
Fourth grade students are using a stream table to learn how slope affects the erosion of rivers.

Students created flashlights out of water bottles, paper clips, index cards, and brads.

Last Wednesday to Friday, Mrs. Jennings attended the ERB Conference in NYC. The theme was Schools in Synch, Harnessing the Collaborative Power of Your Students, Staff and Community, and attendees were from across the US and overseas. ERB produces the CTP IV, the standardized test given at Shorecrest beginning in third grade. Workshops covered many topics, ranging from brain research and its affect on literacy, to interpreting standardized test results, to admissions testing.
Junior Kindergarteners learned a new song about community and respect recently. The song, "I Think You're Wonderful," found them spontaneously touching gently, smiling, and swaying to the beat demonstrating the warmth they feel towards their friends and community.

The crowd of Junior Kindergarten parents, who gathered at the home of Christine and Marc Fratello on October 6, enjoyed an evening of great food and conversation. The "seasoned" parents, whose children were in Alpha last year, greeted the newcomers and made them feel very welcome.
New friendships were formed, and play dates were planned! Many thanks to the Fratellos for opening their lovely home and to Kim Craig, Kelly Lynch, Jodie Gayoso, Sheila Currie, Paige Harper, and Gina White, the JK Parent Representatives who helped the Fratellos plan, coordinate and host the evening.

The Alpha parents experienced their first Parent Social as a class at the home of Corrie and Bill Stover on October 13. The warmth of their home, coupled with delicious pot-luck appetizers and dessert, and lasagna supplied by the Alpha parent representatives, provided an atmosphere of warmth and congeniality.
This friendly and enthusiastic group is sure to enjoy many more good times together in the next 14 years at Shorecrest! Many thanks to the Stovers for their hospitality and to Elise Ryan, Barbara Dolson, and Beth Oden for their assistance in coordinating the fun night.
The eighth graders performed classic show tunes to an audience of Middle Division students, teachers and parents last Wednesday. The selections were performed with so much enthusiasm and clarity, that at the conclusion of the final song, the audience stood to cheer the nearly 80 eighth graders on stage.

Mr. McCarthy, the new Middle Division music teacher and choir director, thanked the Shorecrest community for helping him and his wife learn the ins and outs of an American school. We thank them for working with our students to produce a great first concert of the year. Bravo!
The seventh and eighth graders will have their first dance of the year on November 3. This is a new date, as the dance has been moved from Friday to Saturday to avoid conflict with the varsity football game. The dance will be from 7:00-10:00 p.m., with drop-off and pick-up at the front steps of the Sher Center breezeway.
The fifth and sixth graders will have an after-school social on Friday, November 16. There will be food, music, and games. Student council will provide more information soon.
The Middle Division after-school study hall will be changing rooms beginning on Monday, Oct. 22. As the Wheel classes turn, so do we! During the second quarter we will be using Mrs. Artze's room 5-3 in the Sher Center, and occasionally room 5-4. All else will remain the same.
If your child has not joined us yet, it is a wonderful opportunity to help them get their homework/studying done and to strengthen their study skills and organization.
Seventh graders in Ms. Nelson's class competed in debates on Wednesday. The students had spent the previous few days creating teams, choosing topics and researching facts to prepare for the debate.

Topics included coed P.E. and wearing Halloween costumes in the Middle Division. The students were encouraged to speak persuasively, as well as listen carefully, in order to argue effectively.
Voicethread is a digital storytelling website, and a powerful classroom tool with endless possibilities. Seventh grade English students were asked to post a reflection on what they know about Anne Frank and the Holocaust in anticipation of the upcoming play and adjoining exhibit.

Please click on this link to hear and read their amazing responses. The comments move from one to another on their own. Clicking on the bottom right arrow key moves the reader to the next page. If you place the cursor over each icon, you will view the student's name.
Jorge Giroud, co-owner of Student Voyage and an alumnus of Shorecrest (Class of 1997), came to speak to all of the students in the Upper Division Spanish classes to present the study abroad homestay opportunity in Spain. Mr. Giroud and his Shorecrest colleague, Eric Shamas '97, direct the month-long opportunity for our students currently enrolled in Spanish as well as students from all over the USA.

Mr. Giroud presented a DVD to show the many activities that will be available for our students including Spanish-speaking immersion, travel and college credit coursework. The homestay and the college credit coursework will take place in Sevilla, while the travel portion of the program will take the students to Madrid, Portugal, Gibraltar, Córdoba and Granada. The trip dates for Shorecrest are June 10-July 7, 2008.
Students and parents may request more information, including a very informative DVD, directly from Student Voyage at www.studentvoyage.com. Our students have the opportunity to join the 2008 group by filling out an application, either online or in paper form. Written applications may be returned to Sra. Andrés or Sra. Powers. The application and a deposit are due no later than January 15, 2008.
At Monday morning's gathering of the Upper Division, eight Seniors were recognized for their success on the PSAT given in October 2006.
Tom M., Jeff R., Nick S., and Matthew V. were named as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. To be named a Commended Student, these seniors placed among the top 5% of more than 1.4 million test takers nationally.

Crishana W. was named an Outstanding Participant in the 2008 National Scholarship Program which places her in the top 5% of all African-American testers. Tiffany C., Liz R., and Carter S. were named National Merit Semifinalists which means they placed in the top 1% of those who took last year's PSAT. Semifinalists have the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition and advance to Finalist standing by meeting a number of additional requirements.
We offer hearty congratulations to these eight members of the Class of 2008!

Mark your calendars! From 8-11 on Oct. 27 in the Crisp Gym, dress up in your favorite history-themed costume for an evening of fun.
This year the Clio Club will be sponsoring a mini toy drive for All Children's Hospital. These are the items needed:
There will be food, prizes, a raffle, pumpkin smashing, and karaoke judged a la American Idol style, so save the date!
Kristen M. brought in her mother's teaching dummies to Mrs. Peck's Anatomy class. Kristen showed the students how to insert a needle into a shoulder or knee joint while avoiding the bones. If the needle hit a bone, a loud beep was heard - just like the operation game!

It only took the students a few attempts before they were able to perform a perfect mock corticosteroid injection! Mrs. Peck and her students wish to thank both Kristen and Dr. M. for their time and generosity.
"Banana split, anyone?" Key Club recently held its first annual Banana Split Sale and Eating Contest at lunch. Mr. Ma and the Key Club officers organized the event and served the desserts to the many hungry customers.

There was great participation from Upper Division students looking to satisfy an afternoon sweet tooth. Many students enjoyed the banana split with chocolate syrup along with M & M's in the middle of the day. Chris P. won the exciting eating contest refereed by Stephaine G. For the contest, students had to eat a complete sundae in the shortest amount of time without using their hands.

The Key Club funds raised from this event will be contributed to a community service project. Special thanks to all the officers Stephanie G. Blake F., Mark S., Brittany H., Madi K., Shelby P., and sponsor Mr. Ma for organizing such a fun event. Thanks to all the officers and members who set up, cleaned up and made this event a success!

Last week at a Florida Council for the Social Studies conference in Orlando, Upper Division history teacher Ron Heller gave a paper entitled "The Influence of Geography on Federative Crises of the 19th Century."
By looking at nationalist movements in Switzerland, the US, Germany, Italy and Japan, Mr. Heller related geography to their successes.
• Fourth grader JoAnn T., who competed at the regional figure skating championship this weekend in York, Pennsylvania.

She competed at the pre-juvenile level against skaters from Florida and eight other states. She won the gold medal in her preliminary round on Saturday, and then she won the silver medal in the final round of the competition on Sunday.
• Former Shorecrest substitute teacher Jamey Carroll. He currently plays second base and utility infielder for the Colorado Rockies and so will be playing in the World Series.
Substitute Jamey taught at Shorecrest from 2000-2002. He left Shorecrest to try one last time to make it out of the minors into the majors. In the spring of 2002, Jamey started playing for the Montreal Expos. In 2005 the team was renamed the Washington Nationals. In 2006 Jamey became a member of the Colorado Rockies.
Former Lower Division students and current faculty and staff members would like to wish him well.
• Teachers Cary Powers, Shirley Bassford and Donna LaDuke, who were among the Shorecrest faculty/staff volunteers who answered phones last Saturday at WUSF 89.7FM during their membership drive.

Richard Beaton and Su Stevens were also there and worked the early morning shift. Shorecrest Preparatory School was mentioned on-air several times throughout the morning in recognition of these volunteers' efforts.

Tickets are on sale at the Florida Holocaust Museum or at our theatre box office on the evening of the performance. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, and free for students and faculty. View PDF flyer.

Lauren S. and Mitch M. are a part of the cast of Anne Frank and Me. |

Two sixth grade students, Sydney B. and Kyle M., spoke at a recent Middle Division assembly about the concept of an "Upstander," an individual who stands up for what is right (as opposed to a "Bystander," who stands by and lets things happen).
The two sixth graders had learned about the term "Upstander" when visiting the Florida Holocaust Museum as SPS fifth graders. Sydney and Kyle offered both historical and current day examples of Upstanders, a perfect frame for the upcoming Anne Frank and Me production that is directed by Diana Leavengood and includes three Middle Division actors: sixth graders Alice L. and Annie S., and fifth grader Jonathan R.
Middle Division students will see the play - which juxtaposes the modern times with the Holocaust period - on Wednesday afternoon, October 24. The "Upstander" discussion was also a nice lead in to Middle Division student visits to "The Anne Frank Story," an exhibition currently on display in the Janet Root Theatre Foyer.
Elvis might have popularized Viva Las Vegas more than 40 years ago, but Big Event organizers were belting out its lyrics last week when they unveiled this year's event theme: Viva Las Vegas Auction and Casino Night.

This high-stakes evening of Vegas-style gaming and entertainment will be held Friday, Feb. 22, 2008 at the Coliseum. Everyone will be treated like a big hitter at this royal flush of a fundraiser, so save the date and plan to be all in.
Event Chair Melinda Pletcher is still dealing in volunteers for her Team Viva Las Vegas, so anyone interested should ante up and join us at the next meeting: Monday, Nov. 5 at 8:30 am in the Student Activity Center. (Elvis impersonating is a bonus, but not required).

The Shorecrest Middle Division Charger Football team once again demonstrated that they are the team to beat when they took on the Northside Christian Mustangs last Thursday, Oct. 11, at home.

The Charger defense was stifling and their offense explosive as they amassed three times the offensive yardage of the Mustangs. Unfortunately, the Chargers ended up two points short when the final buzzer sounded.
The Chargers competed in the District Tournament on Monday, Oct. 15, and finished in fifth place. Matt R., a freshman, is the only Shorecrest golfer to advance to the Regionals. Matt shot a 78 for the Chargers. The Regionals will be played at the Eagles Golf Course in Odessa on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Good luck, Matt!

The Chargers opened up winning the first game 25-17, with strong and well-placed serves by Savannah J.-S. and Casey W. The Chargers came close to winning in two, but fell in the second by a score of 24-26. The ladies didn't give in and came back to take the third game 15-12, winning both meetings this season with the Blazers.

On Monday, Oct. 15, the Middle Division A team played St. Stephens in Crisp Gym in their final home match of the season before an enthusiastic Shorecrest crowd. The ladies won both the first and second games by scores of 25-21 and 25-16. Way to go, Chargers!
The team traveled down the road to Canterbury on Wednesday for the season's last match. In the first game, the team's comeback was a little too late, losing the first game 16-25, but the ladies were not about to go down without a fight. They won the second game 25-23, forcing a third game.
The third game was extremely exciting, and it couldn't have been any closer. The ladies dropped the third game 14-16. The team wanted to thank their eighth grade teammates Rachel P., Lizzy C. and Elizabeth P. They will be moving to the JV team next year.
The Middle Division Volleyball team had a successful season ending with a record of 9 and 5. The team dinner and awards are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on November 7 at Harvey's.
Varsity Sailing team captain Acadia W. and skipper Michael B. qualified this past weekend to compete in the 2007 Great Oaks Invitational Regatta in New Orleans November 9-11.
USF hosted the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (SAISA) Great Oaks Qualifying Regatta here in Tampa Bay. Shorecrest was among 14 teams from the region, which includes Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama and the Virgin Islands, competing for 6 spots to attend the national, double-handed championship.
Sailing a collegiate course in 7-11 knots of breeze, the pair posted five second-place finishes in their 14-race rotation. They defeated local teams from St. Pete High and Seminole High. The team will continue to train at USF to prepare for the championship next month.
The District Volleyball Tournament will be played in Crisp Gym next Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Tuesday night, Keswick will play St. Stephens at 5:30 p.m., followed by #1 seed Northside Christian against Shorecrest at 7:00. The winners of both of the Tuesday games will play for the Championship on Thursday night at 7:00.

Upper Division students, mostly Jr. Exchange/Excel Club members, stuffed Sojourn Bears today as one of their many service activities for the year. Once stuffed, they also lovingly named each bear according to its personality.

The bear "skins" are sewn by local volunteers and each bear dons a knitted sweater vest and a name tag. The finished bears are distributed to local children's hospitals and hospices.

We need volunteers to assemble welcome gift baskets at The Hospice of the Pinellas Suncoast in Pinellas Park on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
The baskets contain a hand-made lap blanket, a soothing music CD, a journal, aromatherapy, and lotion. The Hospice provides all of the items, and we supply the hands and the TLC. Once the Shorecrest Yarn Bunch gets its knitted and crocheted blankets ready, we'll be supplying those as well.
All Middle and Upper Division students as well as parents are welcome to take part in this service activity. If you're interested, please contact Ms. Stevens.
