Picture Retake Day is Tuesday, October 16. Any student (Alpha - eleventh grade) who missed having their picture taken on Picture Day should have their picture taken then. Forms are in division offices or you may access an order form online.
All orders and payment must be sent to school on Tuesday, October 16.
If you ordered individual school pictures, students should be bringing them home sometime next week. Anyone wanting pictures retaken may do so on Tueday, Oct. 16. Original pictures must be returned on Picture Retake Day in order to receive the new pictures.
October 10 at 8:30 a.m. at the home of Robin Murphy.
Don't miss this first meeting regarding the Big Event!
This year's Book Fair will be held off-campus at the Barnes & Noble across from the Tyrone Square Mall from November 9 - 18. The hours of the Book Fair will be 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Many wonderful activities have been planned for the Book Fair! On the first evening, Friday, November 9, Curious George will be visiting the store, and on Sunday, November 11, there will be a story time with some very special guest readers:
Also, if you are interested in purchasing a book for a teacher from their wish list, there will be baskets with teachers' names on them in the book store that will have the books teachers requested.
Please make sure to identify yourself as a student, parent, etc. of Shorecrest when you check out as this is the only fundraiser for the library for the year. Barnes & Noble will give a percentage of the purchases directly back to the library fund for any consumables that you buy, whether they are books, calendars, cards, chocolates, gifts, etc.
Internationally known children's author Amy MacDonald will be visiting Shorecrest on November 12. Mrs. MacDonald will speak to students in Early Childhood through grade 4 about being an author, and will discuss her books.
Mrs. MacDonald's books include Rachel Fister's Blister as well as Little Beaver and the Echo and have been on both Parent Magazine's and the New York Times' "Best Children's Books" lists.
A form to purchase a book for Mrs. MacDonald to sign will be sent home in the October 11 mailing, as well as put in backpacks. The deadline to return this form to Mrs. Smay is Oct. 22.
Our Fall Festival planning is well underway. We would love it if some of our Middle and Upper Division parents would be willing to work from 10-12:30 on October 31 to help staff games and activities.
This would allow the Lower Division parents to spend the whole festival with their children. If you are only available for part of that time, we would still love the help. Please contact Karen Quilty (727) 827-1037 if you are available. Thanks!
Two special order items from Spirit Wear that were ordered and paid for on Spirit Night have not been picked up. Unfortunately, there are no names on the order sheets to notify these individuals. If you placed a special order on Spirit Night and have not yet received it, please contact Susie Davis, Myra Wolfson or Jan Lowry.

Have you read a good book lately? Students in Mr. Lee's fourth grade class have, and they want you to know about them. Mr. Lee's students read for pleasure at home; and when they finish a book, they write a critique or summary of what they read.
Then they post their work on a Literature Circle Blog. After they've posted, they can respond to other students' blog entries. Often Mr. Lee's students listen to the advice of their classmates when they choose the next book they will read. Mr. Lee's students invite you to visit their blogs (one | two | three) to learn more about their latest literary adventures!
Today is the official launching of our podcast network, Charger Radio. Podcasts are audio files that are published on the web. You can think of it as our own radio show! And what makes the podcasts on Charger Radio special is that they are produced by teachers and students in the Lower Division.
Podcasts can be about anything - weekly classroom news, book reviews, interviews, poetry readings, virtual field trips - just to name a few ideas. Creating them has many educational benefits. During pre-production, students practice organizing their ideas and write scripts. During production, they develop public speaking skills as they make unique connections with the content they are studying. They also work hands-on with the latest technology to create a product to share with a potentially world-wide audience!
You can listen to our podcasts on the web, download them to your computer and even listen to them on your MP3 player. You can visit our website or, for the tech savvy listener, subscribe to the radio show and be notified when new episodes are posted. Tune in to the latest episode.
There is a Chinese proverb that says: Every journey begins with one step. Fourth graders recently took their first steps toward a new goal for the year. After careful consideration and discussion, each student shared a goal to work towards - including everything from improving eye contact and reading "every book I can" to eating more meat.

To solidify this first step, they painted their feet and put their footprints on mats. The first step is always the hardest, but now that's done! All that's left is continuing to grow in these new areas.
Shorecrest's Chess Club has always had a presence at the monthly Saturday competitions organized by the St. Petersburg Chess Club. Most likely this year will be no different as our clubs are off to a great beginning.

Second grade teacher Karl Tremmel offers two days of chess instruction for first and second grade students. Karl states, "This is a skill that will be in students' lives forever and will help them in all their academic pursuits." The third and fourth grade group just got started.
Coach Andrew Scherman, who has worked with Shorecrest students for several years, is unable to coach this year, but we are pleased to welcome Mr. Craig Van Tilbury. Mr. Van Tilbury, who is an Olympic gold medalist with two international titles, has worked with Mr. Scherman at Shorecrest for over a year. He reports, "We're looking forward to another record-breaking year with the always enthusiastic students of your wonderful school."
Thank you to all our parents for participating in Conference Day. The communication that takes place is invaluable.
Please join us for the Third Grade Social at Lisa and Marc Jacobson's home on October 5. We hope to see you there!
Mrs. Samuel's Alpha class and Mr. Lee's fourth grade class are building community by reading together at least once a month. The first time they met, Mr. Lee's class read transportation books one-on-one to the Alpha children.

The excitement in the room was electrifying. Each Alpha child listened to at least three different stories and conversed eagerly with their fourth grade friends. They are looking forward to their next get-together!
Does mixing red and yellow always make orange? What about yellow and blue, do they always make green?

The children in Alpha and Junior Kindergarten love to experiment with colors and do so in many different media. By mixing colors with finger paint, tempera paint, water, and play dough, they are discovering that the answer is yes!
Mrs. Jotch's class recently discovered that you don't have to go to the store for raisins; you can make them!

The children washed green and red grapes, put them into a dehydrator, and then patiently waited 36 hours for them to be ready. Everyone declared them to be the most delicious raisins ever!
Everyone knows the song, The Wheels on the Bus, but Ms. Uebel's class learned a new version of the song.

They think that the rap version is even more fun to sing than the original way!
Two Spirit Days last week gave the Early Childhood children a chance to show their school spirit in a big way!

They had a great time at the all-school pep rally and many of the children and their families turned out later for the Homecoming football game.
We're looking forward to the JK Parent Social Saturday night at the home of Christine and Marc Fratello. Join us!
This coming week, the Middle Division Administration is inviting students new to Shorecrest to a special pizza lunch. New students in each grade will have their own special lunch with an opportunity to reflect on their first few weeks at Shorecrest with Mrs. Lippincott, Mr. Davis, and Dr. Schoolman.
Pizza lunch dates:
This event is for students only (sorry, parents!), and these students will not need to bring their lunch on their scheduled pizza lunch day. We are proud of our newest arrivals, and we are glad that they have chosen to join us here at Shorecrest!
Drama students in seventh grade have been working with Ms. Nelson on skits and sketches that they themselves have written. On Tuesday, October 9, these pieces will be performed by members of the seventh grade at 7:00 p.m. in the Janet Root Theatre. There will be a 12:50 p.m. show for all Middle Division students on the same day.

All seventh grade students are involved in the production, be they in the cast, the stage crew, working the lights or sound, or in another important role. We hope they break a leg, and we are sure that they have created some fun and lively scenes. All are invited!
While the Middle Division has shifted to trimesters, our four wheel teachers operate on a quarterly rotation and will be concluding their work with their current grade groups on Thursday, October 18. Students will begin their new wheel rotations on Monday, October 22.
The four wheel classes are: Art, Music, Public Speaking/Drama, and Computers/Technology. Grades and comments for these classes will be sent with the Trimester One report cards. (Trimester One ends on Friday, November 2).
The Middle Division Service Club is running a Halloween costume recycling drive. It will benefit Bay Area children through the YWCA of Tampa Bay. Please drop off any gently used or like new costumes and dress-up items for children of all ages.

Items can be dropped off in any division office. The service club will collect, sort, and transport the costumes to the children of the YWCA Family Village to help them have some Halloween fun.

Tickets are on sale at the Florida Holocaust Museum or at our theatre box office on the evening of the performance. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, and free for students and faculty. View PDF flyer.
On October 6 and 7, Mr. Heller will hold weekend research sessions for Ancient History Day projects between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at two locations of the St. Petersburg Public Library:
Bring your library card or, parents, get one for your child beforehand or on the day of the session.

The Upper Division student body celebrated the culmination of Homecoming Week and the Chargers' win over the Mount Dora Bulldogs with a dance at the Saint Petersburg Country Club, on Saturday evening, September 29.
The beautifully decorated venue, the music, and delicious dessert bar made for a memorable evening for the more than 270 who attended. The number of students attending the dance was the highest in the history of any Shorecrest Homecoming!
A special thank you to the Upper Division Student Council and its sponsor, Dean Sessions, for organizing such a fun Homecoming Week, a great dance, and all the arrangements needed for a safe and fair Homecoming Week.
Students in Psychology classes received training in preparation for giving presentations to area fourth grade classes about the dangers of smoking. They will discuss why they choose not to smoke and analyze the deceptions in tobacco ads.

Most graphic of all will be the display of smoking-blackened pig lungs, which students will inflate with bellows. This is not for the squeamish, which is the idea.

SPA, the Shorecrest Parent Association, held an open meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Student Activity Center.

The match consisted of several long, exciting rallies. Chantal J., Sidney H., Kelsey C. and Carola R. had ten digs during the match. Next week the Chargers will face Keswick on Monday and St. Stephens at home on Tuesday.
Last Friday, Sept. 28, the Middle Division Volleyball team traveled to Keswick to compete in their annual middle school volleyball tournament, and the ladies ended the night with two victories and one defeat. There were 335 volunteers from throughout southwest Florida who took part in the largest-ever salt marsh planting on Saturday, Sept. 29. They planted a record-breaking 34,000 Spartina plugs over 34 acres of the Terra Ceia Ecosystem Restoration Project in northern Manatee County.

Several Shorecrest families made this a Saturday family activity. Fifth grader Tatum L. was there with her parents and uncles, and sixth grader Ricky C. came with his mom. Lower Division Spanish teacher Sra. Leon-Cone was there with her family as well.
It was great to see Shorecrest students engaging in service outside of school and doing something good for the environment during weekend family time. They got muddy and had fun - all for a great cause!

All the volunteers were treated to lunch and received t-shirts that say "I made history!" Everyone is invited to come back and visit the area to see the progress of the plants.
Tatum and Ricky plan to reflect on their experience during the next Middle Division assembly on Wed., Oct. 10.
Three boxes filled with Beanie Babies and letters from Shorecrest students in grades 5-12 are ready to go to Iraq over the next few weeks. The Any Soldier Project, led by junior Cortney C., involved the collection of more than 400 Beanie Babies and nearly 100 letters over the last month.

Shorecrest families were so generous with Beanie Babies that we are now reaching out to other schools in the area, as well as local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to get more letters written.

Thank you to all those who donated their Beanie Babies for Iraqi children and wrote letters and notes of thanks, encouragement and support to the members of the U.S. military stationed in Iraq. We offer a special thank you to the teachers who helped their students write some heart-warming letters.
• Fifth grader Ali A., who received the American Cancer Society's Hope For Tomorrow Award for Pinellas County at its annual board of directors' dinner.

Ali was among 14 nominees from Pinellas County considered for the award, and she was selected as the Outstanding Youth for her overall efforts to increase awareness about cancer and the need for finding a cure.
This latest accolade complements the Relay For Life recognition she has already received as the top individual fundraiser (over $6,000) at the 2007 NE St. Petersburg event and as a "Star Supporter" and the recipient of the "Team Spirit" Award in 2006.
Winning the Hope For Tomorrow Award at the event was a surprise for Ali. Her parents, along with ACS staff partner Lynn Webb, were there to celebrate with her.

• Liz R., who has won the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) writing award. Only 595 students nationwide (that's on average 12 students per state) won this award, and Shorecrest, because of its size, is allowed to have only one entrant. So Liz is one of only 49 students in Florida to win this year!
Students who are selected by their schools to compete have to submit a "best of" writing sample, and also sit for a two-hour writing exam. Then the winners are selected from the entry pool. Fewer than a third of the entries are actually selected as winners. This is the second time in three years that a Shorecrest student has won the award.
• Third graders Isabel M., Hannah B., Naomi M. and Ben G., and Kindergartners Simon M. and Joseph B., who just earned their yellow belts from Superkicks.

They have been in training since the summer and are now working toward their gold belts!
• Brandee T., who won four individual medals and the all-around trophy at a recent gymnastics meet. She has now qualified for the state meet in her age group. Great job, Brandee!
