Did you know that EVERY parent who has a child at Shorecrest is a member of the Shorecrest Parent Association (SPA)? This means you! Are you one of those parents who think SPA is not for you? Or maybe you're new to Shorecrest and don't have a clue what SPA is. This meeting is for you!
"SPA sponsors opportunities for all Shorecrest parents to lead and participate in events, activities, and services that support and enhance the educational, social, and fund-raising needs of the Shorecrest community." That's our mission statement and in a nutshell it means that we are here to serve you and your children and make our school a better place. We also have lots of fun doing it!
We need your help, and we want you to be involved. If nothing else, come to this meeting to see the wonderful activities and events that are planned for your children. If you're interested in getting involved and helping out, you can find an area that interests you and join that SPA committee.
At this meeting you will meet the SPA leadership and hear about different SPA committees and events. We'll even provide coffee and snacks, and we promise to not take up your whole morning. We hope to see you on Thursday!
If you would like to volunteer this year with the Shorecrest Annual Holiday Food and Gift Drive and did not sign up yet, it is not too late! Please come to the organizational meeting and coffee at 8:00 a.m. on October 2nd at Beth Rosenbluth's home, 7243 18th St. NE, St. Pete.
Our guest speaker will be Kelly Rossi, the Case Coordinator for the Guardian Ad Litem Program. This meeting is important and will help you decide how you can be involved in this exciting service.
Our Fall Festival planning is well under way. We would love if some of our Middle and Upper Division parents would be willing to work from 10-12:30 on October 31 to help staff games and activities.
This would allow the Lower Division parents to spend the whole festival with their children. If you are only available for part of that time, we would still love the help. Please contact Karen Quilty 827-1037 if you are available. Thanks!

The Collectibles for Cash aka the EBAY Project has been cancelled.
If you have any questions, please contact Gary Butts in the Advancement Office.
Do you have costumes your children have outgrown? Have they stopped playing dress up? Donate your gently used and like-new costumes and dress-up items for children of all ages to the Halloween Costume Recycling Drive.

The Middle Division Community Service Club will collect, sort, and donate the costumes to children served by the YWCA of Tampa Bay to help bring them some Halloween fun.
Drop off in the collection bins in the division offices, Oct. 1-17. For more information, please contact Su Stevens at sstevens@shorecrest.org.
A group of students, led by veterans of Camp Knitty Gritty from last summer, will be knitting and crocheting 6" x 6" squares. The pieces will be joined together to make lap blankets for residents of The Hospice of the Pinellas Suncoast.
If you knit or crochet (or have family members who do), we can use your expertise. If you'd like to supply us with your yarn scraps or no-longer-needed supplies, or be a part of this effort in any other way, please contact Ms. Stevens at sstevens@shorecrest.org.

A reminder to parents and students, the Middle Division class shirt orders are due at the beginning of next week. Each grade has selected their shirt design, and shirts cost $10. There are extra order forms in the MD office.
No extra shirts will be ordered, so please place an order if you would like a shirt. Class shirts will be worn on designated class shirt days throughout the year.
Wednesday was a lovely day for the annual outdoor pit firing and roasting of marshmallows. The sixth graders have been studying about primitive pottery in art and the Ancient Civilizations classroom.

They hand-made small utilitarian pots and burnished the outside surfaces. The pots were then fired in a pit outside the art room. The experience of smoke, fire and hot marshmallows was very authentic.
A big congratulations to sixth grade math teacher Mrs. Kathy Kelly. She has been working with the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project to test pilot the Transitions Mathematics program.
The new, third edition textbook is coming out this fall for Transitions Math from McGraw Hill, and Mrs. Kelly was one of seven teachers nationwide who earned special mention in the book for her input. During the 2005-2006 school year, Mrs. Kelly and some of her students evaluated the trial version of the new edition.
On Thursday in Mr. Hodgson's American Studies class, the seventh graders had the unique opportunity to handle numerous Native American artifacts and make sketches of them in their History journals.

The museum-quality artifacts were brought in by Ms. Hamilton and are part of her family's collection. It includes arrow and spear points, pottery, ax heads, grinding stones, ceremonial effigies, pipes and even a fishhook.
Middle Division sixth grade girls are off and running... literally! The Girls Cross-Country Team has been energized by a number of new members from the sixth grade. For all sixth graders, this is the first opportunity that they have had to represent Shorecrest, and they are making the most of it.
At last Friday afternoon's meet vs. Calvary Christian, a number of our girls posted their best times for a 5K (roughly three-mile) race, with a number of them posting times under 30 minutes! While eighth grader Kathryn K. led the Middle Division charge with a 24:37.9 (third place overall!) and seventh grader Ann Marie F. came in tenth overall with a speedy 26:15.2, Caitlin A. (sixth grade) finished just behind her at 26:15.6 in eleventh place.
A host of Shorecrest sixth graders including Julia B., Molly M., Sydney B., Savannah B., and Traci P. finished between 26 and 30 minutes. Those students finishing the John Chestnut Course in 38 minutes or less included sixth graders Lexy S., Rachel A., Meggie G., Halee M. and Elizabeth H.
We couldn't be more proud of our youngest female runners whose efforts every afternoon in the Florida heat are clearly paying off. Well done, Middle Division girl runners. You are representing us well, and we are proud of you!
Shorecrest will be receiving an Anne Frank exhibit that will be on display from October 9-25 in the Janet Root Theatre lobby. There will be 17 pieces in the exhibit, which is on loan from the Anne Frank Center USA.
The exhibit will be in conjunction with the play "Anne Frank & Me" which Shorecrest Theatre is producing in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. The play is being directed by Shorecrest parent Diana Lucas Leavengood. It will be performed Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Janet Root Theatre.
Tickets are on sale at the Florida Holocaust Museum or at our theatre box office on the evening of the performance. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, and free for students and faculty.
On October 6 and 7, Mr. Heller will hold weekend research sessions for Ancient History Day projects between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at two locations of the St. Petersburg Public Library:
Bring your library card or, parents, get one for your child beforehand or on the day of the session.
The 2008 Girls Homecoming Court also played together during the hockey competition.

Rachel W., Rachel W., Kim N., Lauren S., and Sandy L. have just finished their period of play for the Seniors.

First grade celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day on Wednesday. The children rotated among the four classrooms, participating in activities such as tasting different varieties of apples and graphing their favorites, painting apple trees using their hands and arms as the trunk and branches, learning about and mapping Johnny's travels west, and creating game boards using apple-related words to play Apple-O!

The children enjoyed all of the activities and loved being able to visit and work in the different classrooms.
This week Mrs. Mulkey's kindergarten class visited the Animal House Pet Store. They learned what pets need to live.

The children LOVED getting to pet a puppy, bunny rabbit, gecko, turtle, and even a snake! Thank you, Animal House, for a great field trip!

Please be sure to RSVP to Lisa and Marc Jacobson for the Third Grade Social. We hope to see you all on October 5.
Line up your babysitters so you can enjoy an evening of conversation and delicious food with your peers!
The social for parents of Junior Kindergarten students is October 6 at the home of Chris and Marc Fratello. Please RSVP to let Chris know that you are coming. The Alpha class parent social will be held at the home of Corrie and Bill Stover on October 13. We hope you all will be able to come, but if you can't, please send your regrets to Corrie.
This week the Alpha classes began building with Unit Blocks. These large wood blocks leave plenty of room for the imagination. The children have already enjoyed building towers, boats, cars, and "huge buildings."

We look forward to the weeks ahead as we continue to add other items to the unit block play to further the children's learning. The best part of building so far has been being able to "knock down" what we have built.
The children in Mrs. Carson's class really enjoyed singing "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" in both English and Spanish this week.

It also was really fun to play Oh, Poor José, a game with cards on which José is missing parts of his body. The children had fun trying to identify the missing body parts in Spanish as well as in English.
The Early Childhood children had a great time on their first field trip! Excitement was in the air as they boarded the school buses for the first time and headed off to Crisp Park. Lots of parents came along and were great sports, joining right in and playing with the children.

It was great fun for the boys and girls to explore a different playground and engage in new activities. Everyone enjoyed the snack break, but eagerly resumed play for a while before boarding the bus again and enjoying the ride back to school.
From seeds to sprouts to full-fledged plants, the Junior Kindergarten students are turning into master gardeners as they learn about the growing process. Some of the classes chose sunflower seeds while others chose beans to grow.
The seeds were planted in peat pots earlier in the month and this week were transplanted into the ground. Additional seeds will be planted soon to ensure a flourishing garden and a bumper crop!
Singing hello to their new friends, clapping the syllables in their names, and gluing pictures of their classmates to a large sheet of paper with "little dots of glue, wooooooo!" are just some of the community building activities that have been going on in the Alpha classes.

These activities help the children learn each other's names and feel comfortable in the group. The parents loved the friend collage which helps the children tell them who they sit with at lunch, play with in "Kitchen Keeping," or "drive" with in the RV on the playground.
The Junior Kindergartners went on an outdoor adventure after listening to the story, In The Tall Tall Grass by Denise Flemming. They took clip boards and colored pencils outside to draw pictures of what they discovered in the grass around our campus. They found lots of interesting things to observe and document!
• Sisters Lily and Annie, who as part of the Any Soldier Project, wrote encouraging letters to the US men and women serving in Iraq.

Together they wrote nine letters for the service men and women and donated nine Beanie Babies for the soldiers to give the Iraqi children they meet.
Mrs. Kathie Newton, sponsor of the Interact Club in the Upper Division, met with first grade teacher Mrs. Gaye Whitecage to develop a project in which Upper Division students would read to first graders. Mrs. Whitecage recently met with them for training.

Sixteen Interact Club students will meet with 16 first graders in October for a four-week reading/study/ innovative writing activity using a Halloween story, There Was an Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything.
The Shorecrest Varsity Football team started off their home stand with a victory against Admiral Farragut 28-18 last Friday night, Sept. 21. The offense was paced by Harrison S. with two touchdowns. Hunter T. rushed for 165 yards and one touchdown. Jack S. ran for 96 yards and one touchdown.
"The biggest thing in the game was our offensive line," Coach Hayford said. They really controlled the line of scrimmage and allowed us to run the ball real well." Evan J. was perfect in all four of his extra points. Leading tacklers in the game were Daniel W., Harrison S., Zack H., Jaime Q., and Logan S. Logan also had an interception return for 35 yards.
The Chargers will play their Homecoming game against Mount Dora Bible School on Friday, Sept. 28. Come and check out the new offense of the Chargers!
The Shorecrest Middle Division Football team found themselves in a dog-fight last Thursday evening, Sept. 20, as they traveled to Northside Christian to take on their cross-town rival.

Playing in a torrential downpour, the Chargers went blow for blow with the Mustangs and found themselves in a scoreless tie with just over a minute remaining in the game. Every football player knows that situations like this are resolved by proving who wants it more and who plays with the most heart.
Tired, wet, and dirty, the Chargers went to work through the air eating up big chunks of the Mustang field with each toss of the ball. With just 27 seconds remaining on the clock, timeouts exhausted, 25 yards from the end zone, quarterback Carson R. dropped back to pass behind an offensive line digging with everything they had to protect him.
Captain Ian J.-S. worked his way through the Mustang defense into an open spot in the coverage, and Carson hit him with a laser guided pass. As J.-S. crossed the goal line dragging several Mustangs with him, the Chargers proved who wanted it more and who played with the most heart.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Chargers left the field battered, bruised, exhausted, and wrapped in the flag of a hard-fought and well-deserved victory for the second time this season.
Come and support the 2-0 Middle Division Chargers this Thursday as they go on the road again to take on the Keswick Crusaders.
The Shorecrest Varsity Sailing Team competed in their first high school regatta of the season last Saturday at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. With Michael B. as skipper and team captain Acadia W. as crew, the pair sailed their 420 in light to moderate breezes to two top-ten finishes in their rotation of five races, finishing 11th in their rotation.

They competed against sixteen other teams from around the state. Earlier this month Michael B. competed in the single-handed Cressy Qualifier in Clearwater. He was one of 13 ninth graders in the competitive 64-boat fleet. The Varsity Sailing team is currently training at USF in downtown St. Petersburg under former Olympic sailor Allison Jolly, USF head sailing coach.
The Varsity Cheerleaders have started the year in full force. They are led by Senior captains Allie W. (who attended an additional camp this summer in Hawaii), Chelsea S., and Donna C. They began their year in the end of July at USF for Cheerleading camp.

They spent three nights in a dorm, living and breathing cheerleading. They learned a lot of new cheers, chants, and a few dances. They competed against many other squads and placed second and third in the final day of competitions. They also received blue "superior" ribbons every night in competitions.
Additional awards were given to Donna C., Heather M., Allie W., and Peyton S. They were chosen as All-Stars by the camp instructors and will have an opportunity to travel to London.
Since the season began, it seems that rain has followed them everywhere they traveled. This hasn't kept the cheerleaders down. They have cheered, jumped, smiled and even done push ups through the rain and wind. The Varsity cheerleaders are working hard to get you to yell with them, so LET'S HEAR IT!
