Extended Day is rolling along as we finish the first month of school. The Extended Day students are settling into their after-school routines of homework, playground, snack, and game time.
Take a look at the newly updated website to find new monthly registration forms and other Extended Day information. Make sure to thank your Extended Day staff for the great job they do every day. They have been busy coming up with inventive crafts and games to do with the students.

Every Halloween, the Shorecrest Parent Association hosts a fun family day for all Lower Division families and students.
The festivities begin following the costume parade and end with a hot dog lunch cooked and served by the Shorecrest Administration Team.
Many families mention this as one of their favorite days at Shorecrest. The day will include amusement games, pony rides, bounce houses, rock walls and much more, with a few surprises added this year.
We have kicked off our planning sessions, but still welcome anyone interested in being on this committee to get in touch with the Fall Festival Chair Karen Quilty at karenquilty
@tampabay.rr.com or chair-elect Sydney Legakis at slegakis@yahoo.com.
This is a great way for new parents to help out and meet other parents at school. We are also starting to recruit Middle and Upper Division parents to work a 2-3 hour shift during the Fall Festival so Lower Division parents can spend the morning with their children. We will include more information on this in future updates.
Sadly we bid goodbye to our 11 visitors from Argentina! To Gaston Catalini, Josefina Alvarez, Ornella Scopinaro, Florencia Diaz, Julieta Scopinaro, Ines Catalini, Maximo Scopinaro, Conrado Scopinaro, Josefina Bauza, Francesca Scopinaro, and Arturo Scopinaro, we say: Gracias por pasar la semana en Shorecrest!

Thank you for being such nice guests! We enjoyed getting to know you. Having cultural experiences such as your visit makes our school a special place.
Thank you to Mike and Robin Murphy for hosting a cookout on Monday night, to Kenny S. '14 for inviting some of the students to his house for pizza and swimming on Tuesday, and to the following Shorecrest students who served as school ambassadors for our guests: Wyatt K., Casey E., Rachel B., Casilia S., Hannah S., Hannah W., Jaque G., Casey W., Tess N., Kenny S., Alex J., Nic B., Monica C., and Ana Gabriela R.
Thank you also to both Mrs. Owen and Mr. Tremmel for welcoming one of the younger visitors to your class during the week. We wish our friends a safe journey home. We hope all of you will return!

A reminder that Mike Murphy will lead two discussion forums focusing on building a school of integrity and all parents are invited to attend. Parents are encouraged to discuss their views, expectations and desires for how the students, faculty, staff and parents of our community can enhance the level of integrity demonstrated in the day-to-day operations of our school.
The forums are scheduled for:
Friday, October 5 at 8:15 a.m. in the David and Pam Murphy Student Activity Center (MAC)
Monday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the David and Pam Murphy Student Activity Center (MAC)
If you are able to attend, please RSVP to Karen Bruggeman (727-456-7505) or (kjb@shorecrest.org).
We look forward to hearing the views of our Shorecrest parents!
There was a great turnout for the first Early Childhood Parent Chat of the year. The interest level was very high as were the enthusiasm and participation!

Difficult sleeping patterns, getting children to cooperate the first time you ask, and logical consequences were the main topics discussed, but several other subjects were raised for future meetings. Everyone had great ideas and all were relieved to hear that other parents have the same issues. All are looking forward to the next chat!
Mrs. Spanos' students put their sense of sight to the test on a bird-watching walk this week. They discovered that their sense of hearing was also useful in their quest.

They enjoyed using the binoculars they made as part of their center activities. They didn't find as many birds as they expected and no bears at all. There was a red ball in the tree, though, that caused much conversation!
Nearly twenty Upper Division students attended an orientation session and were interviewed on Wednesday for their new roles as Big Brothers Big Sisters. Stefanie Barsema and Sara Cross from BBBS spent the day at Shorecrest meeting with students and matching them up with "Littles," in grades K-5, for local site-based programs.

In the next weeks, the students will begin spending one hour per week after school at a recreation center or an elementary school mentoring their new charges.
School's out that day, so come help build a house for a family in need. For more information, please contact Ms. Stevens at sstevens@shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510.
President of the Upper Division Interact Club, Michael W., called Brookwood Florida, a residence for female adolescents, and asked if there was anything they needed to help get their residents ready for the new school year. After a request for 26 calculators, Interact solicited the Upper Division students to bring in their used or new calculators to help support this opportunity.

The club has collected 22 calculators and hopes to reach the goal soon. Thank you to all the students who gave so generously!
Several service projects are under way in the Middle Division. Groups of students working with our Director of Service Learning, Su Stevens, are involved with the Any Soldier Project, R.E.A.D., children's magazine recycling drive, and the fifth and sixth grade Community Service Club.
The Any Soldier Project asks families to donate Beanie Babies (we have already collected many) and asks students to write letters to troops overseas (we need more letters!). A group of Middle Division students are working with junior Cortney C., who is spearheading the project. The deadline for these letters to be completed is Sept. 28, when they will be shipped overseas with the Beanie Babies that will be distributed by troops in Iraq as an act of goodwill.
R.E.A.D. (Recycle Educate and Donate) is another project just underway that asks Shorecrest students to donate their old children's magazines before Oct. 12. The magazines will be donated to local shelters such as ASAP, CASA and others that house families with children.
The Community Service Club, led by fifth and sixth graders, has selected an environmental effort as their first project. Shorecrest families are invited to participate in a huge Tampa Bay Watch sea grasses planting on Sat., Sept. 29 in Terra Ceia. Soon they will lead the Halloween Costume Recycling that will provide costumes for children served by the YWCA of Tampa Bay.
For more information about any of these project, or to share your ideas for other service efforts, please contact Ms. Stevens at sstevens@shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510.
• Second grader Clara L., who volunteered recently as a book-labeler with the United Way of Tampa Bay Second Annual Children's Book Drive. Over 100,000 books were collected for children in Tampa Bay.

Not only did Clara donate and label books, she was interviewed on Channel 10's Morning News last month about the importance of reading.
• Second grader Jessica J. and her kindergarten brother Joshua, who have been feverishly collecting Box Tops 4 Education for Shorecrest. So far, they have collected a total of 72 box tops.

They love the hunt for the tops on the everyday products that their mom buys at the grocery store. Besides the hunt, they enjoy counting their collection of tops!
• Shorecrest Parent Association volunteers, who kept things moving along at Lower Division Student Picture Day on Tuesday.

Having the opportunity to participate in many of our daily math exercises and routines proved to be the highlight of this year's Math Night.

Parents enthusiastically listened, asked questions, and participated in activities focusing on the topics of Number Sense and Mental Math, Algorithms, and Everyday Math Games. Teachers were delighted to have the opportunity to share many of the techniques designed to meet our goal of developing flexible and fluent math thinkers.
Fourth grade students are learning to be "real" scientists as teachers explore one company's option for updating our science program in the Lower Division.
The program, Science and Technology for Children, was developed by the National Science Resources Center in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institute and the National Academies.
Their mission to improve learning and teaching of science for all students is evidenced by the hands-on, inquiry-based nature of the program. Throughout the first trimester, students will be completing two units: Electricity, and Land and Water.
On Friday, September 14, kindergarten was a blaze of color as everyone enjoyed wearing a favorite color to school rather than their Shorecrest uniform.

What fun the students had showing off their special colors and making pictures of themselves wearing their special clothes. They all loved Color Day.
Mrs. Minke's class is having fun this week celebrating the last week of summer with an imaginary trip to the beach for a picnic. Is summer really over on Saturday?

Many thanks to our wonderful first grade hosts the Knipe, Willis, Samuelson, and Hess families for an unforgettably fun first grade social.
Click here for information about class competition events, rules, practice schedules, and everything you need to know about preparing for this exciting event. Homecoming will be Sept. 25-28. Official Calendar.
Ron Heller reports:
In the '80s, a Neil Simon movie was released called "Only When I Laugh" with Marsha Mason, who plays a struggling stand-up comic, and Kristy McNichol, who plays her brushed-aside daughter.

There is a scene in which Mason's character goes to a school assembly where McNichol will win an award. When asked to comment on her daughter's recognition, Mason responds, "My heart is full."
These four little words are apropos to my feelings of the effusions of love that poured forth from the Shorecrest community during my recent illness. To all of you, "my heart is full" and I thank you.
Students in Mr. Napodano's Honors Conceptual Physics class are studying motion in two directions.

Using a small ramp and a steel ball, students make measurements and aim to have the ball launched from a specific height, then land in a cup placed at a specific location.
Officer John Vallejo spoke to the Upper Division on Thursday about the meaning and consequences of driving while impaired. He informed the students about some myths and some facts. He truly affected the students knowledge in DUI's and alcohol. Vince M. stated, "I had no idea you could be on a bike and get a DUI!"

Officer Vallejo has been a police officer with the City of Tampa for 17 years. As a traffic homicide investigator, he has seen, first-hand, the tragedies that are the result of impaired driving. Officer Vallejo has been a DUI Investigator for 12 years and to date, he has arrested over 1,800 impaired drivers.
In 1998, Officer Vallejo developed and implemented a program to educate young drivers about the consequences of impaired driving. The educational program is currently conducted in 300 Drivers Education classes at 30 high schools in Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. Over 12,000 young drivers participate in the program on an annual basis.
Officer Vallejo has authored and published a book titled Obvious Choice to improve public awareness about the issue of impaired driving. Over 50,000 copies of the book have been distributed to young drivers across the Tampa Bay area.
AP Chemistry students Acadia W. and Alex N. were the first in their class to correctly identify eight unknown white powders by chemical analysis.

The contest required students to design a series of chemical tests that would allow them to identify the powders in as few steps as possible. The winners did so in only two steps!

Upper Division Spanish students received special lessons this past week from visiting Argentine teacher Julieta Correas de Díaz. Sra. Correas is here as the organizer and chaperone of the Mendoza-Saint Petersburg Exchange, which brings students from Mendoza and Córdoba, in Argentina, to Shorecrest for one week.

Our Upper Division Spanish classes have benefited from very special presentations on Argentina, and more specifically about the region of Mendoza and Argentina's historically popular dance, the tango.
This was a great opportunity for our students to experience a native speaker from Argentina, learn new material from an authentic source, practice their spoken Spanish and have some fun, especially learning about the tango.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to put their many years of lessons to practice, therefore making the language real. ¡Muchas gracias!

(Note: For those planning to attend the seventh grade TIP meeting, the meeting will take place immediately following the Fifth Grade Roundtable in the same location.)

The first rehearsal is set for October 1.
Sixth grade language arts students subscribe to The Write Stuff newspaper which includes a monthly column called "Come Write In." Students have an opportunity to respond to a question of the month, and the paragraphs with the best answers and fewest mistakes may be chosen for publication in a future issue.
Students enjoyed responding to this month's question: "If you could be featured on the cover of any magazine, which one would it be? Tell us and write a creative paragraph about what you did to land yourself on the cover." Sixth graders had no problem imagining themselves on the covers of such publications as Sports Illustrated, Tiger Beat, Bop, Triathlete, American Girl. . .

Taking the assignment one step farther, the students created the magazine covers! Using the latest iMac computers, they took their own pictures to feature on a creative cover design.

To view and read about these sixth grade superstars, please visit Mrs. Meyer's language arts classroom in the Sher Center. Watch for future news regarding the winners of the contest!
On Thursday and Friday, seventh and eighth grade students had a guest speaker, Señora Julieta Correas de Díaz, in Spanish class. In accordance with chapter themes, students learned about famous Argentine leaders and Argentine health care.
Seventh graders learned that José de San Martín is similar to our George Washington. He fought for the independence of Argentina, Perú, and Chile from Spain.
In addition, students gained insight into life in Argentina. For example, they learned that our visiting Argentine students attend a private bilingual school: half of the school day is taught in English, and the other half is taught in Spanish. Students in both grades were very enthusiastic about practicing their Spanish skills with Señora Correas de Díaz. ¡Muchas gracias a ella por enseñar!
Lower Division Media Specialist Dottie Smay spoke to students on Tuesday about the Sunshine State Book Program. The books are now on reserve in the library for students in grades 3-6. Any student who reads three books from this year's list is eligible to vote in April.

This is a state program of the Department of Education open to all Florida schools that wish to participate. The author receiving the most votes will be awarded a prize.
