Shorecrest Parent Association

Fall Fest

Fall Festival

Every Halloween, the Shorecrest Parent Association hosts a fun family day for all Lower Division families and students.

The festivities begin following the costume parade and end with a hot dog lunch cooked and served by the Shorecrest Administration Team.

Fall Festival

Many families mention this as one of their favorite days at Shorecrest. The day will include amusement games, pony rides, bounce houses, rock walls and much more, with a few surprises added this year.

We have kicked off our planning sessions, but still welcome anyone interested in being on this committee to get in touch with the Fall Festival Chair Karen Quilty at karenquilty
@tampabay.rr.com
or chair-elect Sydney Legakis at slegakis@yahoo.com.

This is a great way for new parents to help out and meet other parents at school. We are also starting to recruit Middle and Upper Division parents to work a 2-3 hour shift during the Fall Festival so Lower Division parents can spend the morning with their children. We will include more information on this in future updates.

Cave Painting

Cave Painting

The sixth grade art classes recently painted a cave drawing in the cage area between the science rooms in the Razook Center. Authentic drawings came from studying about cave art in social studies and art class. They used accurate colors, made their paintbrushes, and signed the walls with a handprint. They had a great time painting and being messy!

Duke TIP program for Seventh Graders

Once again, Shorecrest Middle Division students returned outstanding national results for the Duke TIP program.

Last year, more than two thirds of the seventh grade qualified for the program, 41 students took the test, and 16 earned state or national awards.

TIPThis year, 46 seventh graders qualified for the Duke TIP testing. To qualify, students needed to score in the top 5% of a specific ERB test.

There will be an informational meeting September 24 for parents to learn more about the program. Parents should look for an e-mail invitation to that event.

Seventh Grade Virtual Colonies

This week in American Studies, the seventh graders played "Settling North America," a virtual computer game. This coincides with their study of the Jamestown and Plymouth colonies. The students were given 20,000 shillings to begin with, and they used the money to build ships and purchase food and wood.

virtual colonies

Once their colony was established, the students had to maintain their colony and make it successful by providing food and shelter for their settlers and eventually set up trade with the Native Americans and Europe to make money for their investors back in England.

Message from Mr. Murphy

Patience

Mike Murphy

My parents would be having a great laugh. Patience was not a concept I understood during their lifetimes. I was the poster child for impatience. Time, some good role models and some great mentors have tempered my predisposition to impatience. I probably had ambition and patience too closely entwined not realizing that it is possible to have one without the other.

Earlier today I observed a master teacher patiently guide his students through a homework assignment. The teacher was checking for understanding just as much as he was checking for correct answers. I was struck by how patiently and thoroughly he worked with his students to be sure they understood the concepts covered in the homework. I am confident he had prepared a lesson for the day. Yet, he made sure his students understood the lesson from the previous day before forging ahead with his plans.

I realize that it is possible that the teacher was not being patient at all. He may have just been trying to be thorough and concerned about his students. However, from my seat, I was struck by his patience. I imagine other adults sitting in my seat would have shared an appreciation of the teacher's ability to address question after question even when the concepts seemed remarkably similar. Students were treated with respect and dignity.

So, here is our challenge. We have been at school for almost three weeks. Many students are just waking up from the "summer hibernation." Some are beginning to figure out how to manage the expectations of new teachers and school routines. Others are learning to juggle very packed schedules. The students are just warming up. Are we being appropriately patient as the cycle of a new school year begins? Are we establishing the conditions for maximum growth by checking for understanding and patiently reviewing guidelines we have already explained? In short, are we being master parents?

Ragu has a sharp slogan that states, "Life is short, but childhood is shorter…" All of us at Shorecrest look forward to building strong foundations for your children in the time we have together.

Cheers!

Mike Murphy

Early Childhood

Parenting Dilemmas?

Get together with parents of other Early Childhood children and Betty Gootson in the Murphy Student Activity Center (MAC) on Thursday, September 20 at 8:20 a.m. for an hour-long discussion of topics relevant to your lives as parents.

Helping your child develop healthier eating habits, simplifying bedtime or morning routines, the effectiveness of logical consequences versus punishment, and appropriate schedules for young children are just a few possible topics we may touch on this year. The floor is always open to discuss whatever is on your mind!

Exploring Begins!

The Junior Kindergarten building was full of excitement last Friday as the children had their first taste of exploring! Every Friday the children have the run of the building to engage in interesting activities prepared for their enjoyment and learning.

exploring

Last week, it was fingerpainting, exploring their five senses, preparing fresh fruit kabobs for snack, and discovering the properties of flour by using funnels, water, and more. Everything went very smoothly thanks to all the wonderful parent volunteers who came to help!

Getting From Place to Place

The many ways you can do that is the topic in Alpha this month. The children are learning about methods of traveling from one place to another.

transportation

It's all transportation whether it is by land, on the sea or in the air. In the classrooms, the children are using model vehicles in a variety of ways and listening to some wonderful stories to promote their interest and learning.

tricycle

They are discovering that even their arms and legs can be transportation as they climb across the structure and ride the tricycles on the playground!

Rock Hunters

The members of Mrs. Carson's class took a "rock walk" this week and used their senses of sight and touch to find rocks of different sizes, textures, colors and shapes. When they returned to class, each child chose a favorite rock to describe to their friends.

rock hunters

Some of the questions the children answered while describing their rocks included: Was it rough, smooth, or both? Was it small, medium-sized or large? What colors were in your rock? The rocks are now in their science center with magnifying glasses for observation.

Hablamos Español?

Señora Hahn visited Mrs. Jotch's JK class to help teach the children about colors in Spanish. She read two books, Yo Veo Colores and Los Colores del Jardin. The children were given different colored flowers to name in Spanish and put in a community vase. They all really enjoyed practicing speaking Spanish with a native of Spain!

Lower Division

Math Night

Home Links, Frames and Arrows, Partial Products, Skills Links... how does it all fit together? Please plan to join us on Wednesday, September 19 to learn more about the many components of Shorecrest's math program. Beginning at 7:00 in the Janet Root Theatre, parents will have an opportunity to see the program in action as well as participate in many of the daily routines.

Shorecrest's Lower Division welcomes fourth grader Alan A.

"Our Wonderful World"

In 1984, the National Council for Geographic Education created the "Five Themes of Geography" as a way to help educators teach geography and make their students more geographically literate. This literacy is more than being able to locate places on a map. It includes an understanding of different peoples and cultures, an awareness of events that are happening around us, and a familiarity with economics and politics. In our global, Internet-connected world, geographical literacy is more important than ever.

As a fun way to get kids thinking about geography, third and fourth grade students will be responding weekly to Mrs. Baralt's geography blog, "Our Wonderful World." Each Monday, new questions will be posed along with links to help in researching the answers. Students are encouraged to submit their answers via the comment feature of the blog. The correct answers will be posted at the end of each week.

Not only will students be learning about geography, but they also will be practicing the skill of reading websites for information. Parents, faculty, and older students are welcome to join us.

Natural Beauty

After reading the inspiring imagery in the book Everglades, written by Jean Craighead George and Wendell Minor, Mr. Lee's class ventured out to the back pond to explore the natural world firsthand. While there, they discovered the wondrous flora and fauna of the school's backyard. Each student documented his or her own discoveries with a digital camera.

at the pond

Back in the classroom, students identified the organisms using field guides and then worked to recreate the authors' use of similes and metaphors to describe the images they captured. Here is an example:

An elegant blue heron wades through murky water on the shore of a glassy creek, scavenging for every crab and crustacean in vain. Luscious deep green grass gleamed with morning dew, and the luxurious sun beat down intensely on a myriad of lustrous trees.

And the Grand Total Is -

At Monday's flagpole, Mrs. Jennings announced the grand total of books read by Lower Division students over the summer. Student estimates fell well short of the monumental total of 2,336!

Please don't stop reading now! Keep on discovering new books.

Science of Cars

Third graders have been learning about motion in preparation for designing their own car that they will eventually race.

science of cars

So far they have learned how to use gravity as a force to move their cars and how weight affects their ability to move.  Next week the students will examine how friction affects vehicles.

Read and Recycle

If you have gently-read children's magazines around the house that you'd like to recycle, please consider giving them to the Middle Division READ Magazine Recycling Drive. They will be donated to shelters such as ASAP and CASA, where families with children live. This project is the brainchild of fifth grader Alice D., and the entire Middle Division will be participating. She wanted to help provide fun reading materials for kids who are homeless or displaced.

The collection box is located in the Middle Division office and the drive will end on Friday, Oct. 12. Alice is also looking for student volunteers to help her sort the collection and get it ready to donate.

If you'd like to help, please see Alice or contact Ms. Stevens at 727-456-7510 or sstevens@shorecrest.org.

Beanies Need Letters

We've had a great response to the Any Solder Project with hundreds of Beanie Babies - now we need as many letters to send to the troops. If you've been thinking about writing a letter, now is the time to put pen to paper (or fingers to the keyboard).
