The eBay Project

How many volunteers does it take to make the eBay Project a success?ebay logo

You may have seen the recent flyer about the Shorecrest eBay Project. We are looking for commitments from several volunteers specific to the areas listed below. With the volunteers in place, the planning can begin. If this sounds exciting to you and you might be interested, please let us know today!

You need to give only a few hours of your time each month, and you can schedule a time that's convenient. You and a friend could take on a task as a team so there is always a back up in place. This really can be fun and rewarding and a great benefit to the school at the same time!

Task Descriptions

Receiver - Accept and price donated items delivered to campus at a designated location during morning drop-off times and secure items in storage. Receiver must be able to estimate saleable value and weight for shipping. (4-6 days/month; 1 hour/ day)

Photographer - Photograph items and upload to computer on campus twice per month after receipt of items, preferably on a regular schedule but at the discretion of the volunteer. (3-4 hours/month)

Lister - Construct, monitor and adjust eBay listings. Initial auction listings will be done on campus; however, monitoring and adjusting can be done from home. Extensive experience with eBay is desired, and this position will ideally have several volunteers in a team approach and with monthly rotations. (8-10 hours/month)

Arbitrator - Resolve any disputes that arise from the auction process, payments or returned items (minimal hours as needed).

Shipper - Package and ship items upon completion of each auction, which requires physically transporting sold items to the post office or UPS Store and arranging for shipment to customers. (4-6 hours/month as needed)

Promotions - Publicize the project to the Shorecrest community to solicit parents to donate items through E-Bytes, mailings, flyers and e-mails. Requires some creativity and vigor up-front in creating materials for the initial impact but should become a routine set of tasks after the first couple of months. (1-2 hours/month)

Bookkeeper - Maintain financial records and report to the business office. (4-6 hours/month).

Please contact SPS parent Tim Ebright at ebright@tampabay.rr.com or (813) 716-5230.

New Position

Associate for Alternative Revenue and Event Support

Shorecrest is seeking a motivated person to organize and support fundraising activities sponsored by parent organizations. This is a part-time position. Salary and benefits will be comparable with other Shorecrest staff positions. For information, contact Mike Murphy and/or Gary Butts.

Nursing Opportunity

On occasion, there is a need for a substitute nurse in our clinic. We are looking for the following qualifications: an active nursing license from the state of Florida, comfort working with children, and patience! Marie Confident would be happy to spend time in the clinic with those who have potential interest.

Clinic Bytes

Remember to Pick Up Your Medications

We have no means of storing medications safely over the summer. If you have left medications for your child in the clinic or in one of the division offices, please pick them up on the last day of school. The nurse will clean out the clinic and discard leftover drugs and perishables on Tuesday, May 29.

Lost & Found

Unclaimed usable items in the clinic lost & found will soon be donated to a local charity. If you're missing anything, please check the lost & found before it's too late!

Summer Immunizations & Physicals

School Physicals

Although vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening is required by the State of Florida, the Pinellas County Health Department does not extend its screening programs to private school students.

For this reason, we ask that students entering Kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and seventh grades provide a school physical form which includes vision and hearing screening. Physical forms for students entering seventh grade should include scoliosis screening as well. All school physicals should be dated less than one year before the beginning of the new school year.

Immunizations

Returning students ordinarily do not require any additional immunizations after Kindergarten until seventh grade. The seventh-grade immunization form should include an adult tetanus/diphtheria booster in addition to other age-appropriate immunizations and must be signed by the doctor for seventh grade entry.

Sports Physicals

To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, students are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that next year's physical be taken after May 15, 2007.

Seventh grade students who are having a sports physical may ask their doctors to include vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening information on the sports physical form in order to satisfy the state screening requirement discussed above.

Thank you, and have a safe, healthy, and fun summer!

Baccalaureate 2007

before the Baccalaureate
Some Seniors mug for the camera before Baccalaureate.

The Class of 2007 processed into the Janet Root Theatre as proud parents, friends, faculty and administrators looked on during the Baccalaureate ceremony on Sunday afternoon, May 20. Student Council Co-President Kaitlin B. welcomed the guests, and then the Senior Vocal Ensemble sang the Shorecrest Alma Mater.

valedictorian and salutatorians
Salutatorian Jamie C., Valedictorian Anna M., and Salutatorian Taylor T.

Headmaster Mike Murphy discussed the purpose of Baccalaureate as "a time when we slow down to reflect on the people and the events that have contributed to mold this class and to form some of their most significant memories."

Six seniors, Eby O., David H., Carley S., Sonya N., Ben S. and Jackie K. shared their reflections of Shorecrest, their classmates and faculty with smiles and laughs and a few tears.

Tyler Fall was chosen as the Faculty Speaker and he gave an insightful and humorous speech regarding change and transition, "You've done well, you've performed admirably, and soon it will be time for you to move on. And Shorecrest will change in your absence - I mean that in the figurative sense, but also in the literal sense because less than a week after you graduate, several pieces of very large machinery will roll onto campus and will begin to smash up much of the upper school.

"The class of 2007 will, quite literally, be followed by large-scale destruction. This destruction, of course, is part of the new construction project to upgrade the upper school, and it means that the Shorecrest that you visit, as former students, will look very different.

Tyler Fall
Mr. Tyler Fall

"Many of your former classrooms will be gone; your senior lounge will be gone… Still, even if the physical appearance of Shorecrest were to remain the same, the school would seem like a very different place… It's unavoidable because you yourselves will all change."

Lizzie M., President of the National Honor Society, closed the ceremony by quoting from "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein.

After Baccalaureate, the soon-to-be-graduates and their families headed to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. At the dinner, Upper Division Head Stephen Manella roasted the seniors, giving everyone a turn on the skewer. Then Owen L. presented the senior class gift, a crystal bowl, and Mrs. Levitt prepared and expertly presented a splendid slide show of the graduating class.

Memories

Fourth grade participated in their Memory Ceremony marking their moving up from the Lower Division to the Middle Division. This tradition is a wonderful way for family and the school community to celebrate the memories of the children's elementary years.

Songs, poetry, a slide show, and Mrs. Jennings' remarks of appreciation made them feel very honored, indeed.

Watch out, Cannes...

Shorecrest's second annual Literary Devices Film Festival was held this week. Parents and friends chuckled while viewing the premier of Mrs. Drexler's third grade students' iMovie creations. The project began when, drawing from a hat, students were randomly assigned a specific literary device to investigate.

Once their focus was defined, the children got to work locating a published poem that incorporated the use of either similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, or hyperbole. Next the teams wrote their own original poems. Then the fun really started.

Each team expressed their own creativity as they demonstrated the use of their assigned Literary Device in a humorous movie. Awards were given for Best Screen Play, Best Audio and Vocals, Best Game Show, Best Cinematography, Best Special Effects, and Best Interview.

New Slate of Interact Officers Is Elected

Congratulations to the 2007/2008 Interact Service Club Officers. Students filled out personal profiles and obtained three letters of reference from teachers to apply. Candidates gave speeches at the last Interact meeting of this year.

Interact sponsor, Mrs. Newton, is very excited about the strength of next year's Interact leaders. They are: Historian Summerly B., Media Specialist Wyatt K., Sergeant-at-Arms Becky D., Treasurer Mike M., Co-Secretaries Natalie N. and Mitch M., Co-Vice Presidents Bekka G. and Andy N., and President Michael W.

Projects planned for August include a female clothing drive for Florida Brookwood Home for displaced girls, so don't throw away last year's fashions when shopping this summer! A school/supply store and possibly a paper calendar are being considered. More information to come!

SADD Club Elects New Officers for Next Year

Due to her terrific job of putting together the Mock DUI that SADD hosted for the Upper Division in April, Edie B. earned the position of SADD Club President for next year! The other SADD Officers include returning Vice President Kim N., Co-Secretaries Chloe H. and Rachel B., Treasurer Chantal J., and Media Specialist Stephanie G.

SADD Sponsor Kathie Newton and Edie have already begun scheduling speakers for next year, hoping to have Hillsborough's Head of the DUI Department, Officer John Vallejo, visit us in the fall before Homecoming. The spring speaker is very well known and the club is trying to get him to fly in and speak with us. June's SADD Activities focus on the KISS Campaign which stands for Keep It a Safe Summer!

Junior Exchange

Fourteen members of the Junior Exchange/Excel Club met on May 24 to select its leadership for 2007-08. Congratulations to the following leaders:

  • President: Lauren S.
  • Vice President: Kim N.
  • Co-Secretaries: Jordan S. and Jeff R.
  • Treasurer: Edie B.
  • Rib Fest Project Leader: Kim N.
  • Soujourner Bear Project Leader: Jaci R.

The club will meet regularly on the first Thursday of each month in ST-1, and Ms. Stevens will be the club's advisor.

She was selected by audition out of hundreds who auditioned in California, Texas, New York, Chicago and Florida. The intense three-week Master Class will culminate in two public preformances of "Broadway Musicals... the Old and the New" at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center on July 28.

• The Shorecrest community, which since August, 2006, has recycled 4,460 lbs of office paper. Thank you to everyone who is taking part in this effort.

recycling

Here are some interesting facts about the impact of paper recycling:

Letter from the Headmaster

Summer Goals

Mike MurphyVacation has not even started, and I find myself thinking about why our students need to have restful but productive summer vacations. In a nutshell I encourage parents to build in as much balance to the break as possible.

Research is pretty clear that children who read, read and then read some more do better in school, better on tests and better in many other elements of life than children who read sparingly. If we are going to invest in a child's education, making sure that reading happens on a regular basis is clearly a wise approach.

I want you to imagine the children from all over our city, our region, our state and nation who will spend the summer shooting baskets, throwing passes, catching balls, lifting weights, running, swimming, playing, practicing and getting better at an activity. Yet, every coach meets students who have not gotten off the couch but expect to have the same playing time as the students who practiced and tried to improve their skills. One of the athletic apparel companies uses the slogan, "No Excuses." That works for me.

For the past twelve years, I have ended the summer by interviewing the incoming senior class. Some of them will have the jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities and travel experiences that far exceed anything I ever dreamed of doing while in high school. These are more than resume building activities. Students are out there making serious contributions to our communities. They are taking skills they have learned at school and using them to the fullest. They are extending the college preparatory experience into preparation for life.

I hope every child and every parent is able to have days that completely break from the routine of the school year. I look forward to my obligatory banana split. I cannot wait for the new Harry Potter book to come out. My summer goals include more exercise, more reading and time to walk in the mountains. Of course, I will be at school and will welcome opportunities to visit with parents and students.

I wish all of you a happy, safe and healthy summer break. I look forward to seeing you back at Shorecrest rested and ready to go in August.

Cheers!

Make a Difference for Shorecrest

For the past five years, The Big Event has raised over $100,000 a year to support the education of Shorecrest students. This week past chairs and SPA leaders met to discuss the future of the Big Event and fund raising efforts led by parents. There is consensus on a few important areas:

  1. Parent support is very important.
  2. Great relationships are formed while working on school events.
  3. A social event for parents from all grades helps build a stronger community.
  4. Fund raising events should be focused on raising funds.

There is an open question as to whether we should have a Big Event or try a new activity in the coming year. The decision cannot be made until an individual or a team of parent leaders volunteer to work with SPA and the administration on an event.

In the coming year, there will be a Shorecrest staff member designated to work with SPA and parent volunteers on fund raising and social events.

If you would like to chair, co-chair or help with the SPA fund raising activity for 2007-2008, please contact Monique Roberts, Nikki McQueen or Mike Murphy.

Middle Division

Awards Assembly

Last Tuesday, a near capacity crowd filled the Janet Root Theatre to celebrate a wide range of student successes at the Middle Division Honors and Awards Assembly.

Students were recognized for Student Council participation and for high scores on a variety of World Language tests. Mr. Hodgson presented special awards to History Fair winners at the county and state levels. Brett D., our Middle Division representative at the National History Fair, received a fine send-off!

Mrs. Williams, the Middle Division Art teacher, spiced up the procedings by asking area art contest winners to present their art pieces on stage. Mr. Murphy also added a special dedication to teachers who had spent ten years at Shorecrest (Mr. Raab, Mrs. Belt, and Mr. Cruise) and 25 years in the case of Mrs. Grau.

Unlike past years, the Top Scholar Awards (both the All 'A' High Honor Roll and the All 'A' and One 'B' Honor Roll) were presented at this week's assembly rather than in September.

These Top Scholar Awards served as a prelude to the final award of the afternoon. Coach Hayford presented the Harold Bruggeman Award to the sixth grader who represents the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork and effort on the playing field. The recipient of the Harold Bruggeman Award for 2006-07 was Savannah J-S.

The Middle Division Honors and Awards Assembly was the final event that brought together fifth through eighth graders at Shorecrest. We certainly wish our eighth graders all the best in their high school careers.

Fourth Grade Invasion!

The fourth graders have officially arrived in the Middle Division. Recently the fifth grade teachers welcomed the current fourth graders for a morning of cookies and classroom activities.

Our fourth graders spent fifteen minutes in each of our fifth grade teachers' classrooms. The morning provided fourth grade students a "sneak preview" of the classrooms and locker areas that they will be inhabiting when they return from summer vacation.

Fifth grade classroom

Our fifth grade team of educators looks forward to this event each year, and this year's version of the event did not disappoint. We look forward to welcoming incoming fifth graders and their parents to a special orientation evening on Thursday, August 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the Band Room of the Raymund Center.

Fifth Grade Visits the SPCA

After a month-long effort that began on Middle Division Community Service Day, the fifth graders arrived at the SPCA in Largo with vanloads of items for animals. They collected and donated nearly 1,000 lbs. of dog food, boxfuls of toys, a wagonful of kitty litter, and stacks of used blankets, towels and newspapers.

During their visit, the students enjoyed meeting many of the shelter's animals that ranged from horses and cows to dogs, cats and rabbits. They gave a mid-morning snack to the farm animals, and experienced firsthand that some goats have a lot to learn about taking turns and portion control!

The collection drive for the SPCA has been the fifth grade's service project for the past five years. This year's effort was complemented by the creation of public service posters. During Community Service Day, a group of students created eight different posters to promote the messages of adoption and the importance of spaying and neutering pets.

The students plan to ask local businesses such as veterinarian's offices and pet supply stores to display these posters.

In appreciation of their efforts, SPCA education volunteers gave each of the students a blue wristband that says "I Saved A Pet." By learning about the SPCA's mission and supporting their work, the fifth graders did make a difference in the lives of many animals.

Early Childhood

Wet and Wonderful

The end-of-the-year parties in Alpha and Junior Kindergarten were awesome, and the parent turnout was fantastic!

early childhood party time

The children had a ball engaging in crafts, playing games, and eating special snacks. For both groups, the parties culminated units on sea life and the ocean. In Alpha, the children enjoyed wearing their fish print tee shirts, decorating sand buckets, stringing necklaces, printing on sailor hats and making clay pictures. They even bowled with real coconuts!

In Junior Kindergarten the children played Chicken Limbo and decorated treasure boxes, painted their feet to print on beach backpacks, and decorated visors.

They especially enjoyed making and eating banana splits! The special fun was outdoors where wading pools with ring toss and other games awaited the children.

Sidewalk chalk, horseshoe games, hopscotch, blowing bubbles, shaving cream painting and a parachute filled with beach balls provided lots of fun and excitement.

Progress Reports

Progress reports along with summer activity suggestions and supply lists for next year will be mailed by the end of next week. Please contact the EC office if you have any questions.

The Ice Cream Man Comes!

The Early Childhood children enjoyed a special treat on the last day of school when Bill, the ice cream man, visited with his truck.

With so many options, it wasn't easy for each child to decide which ice cream to choose!

Many Thanks!

It was a great year in Early Childhood! It was wonderful to have so much support. Our helpers were too numerous to name everyone, but to all those who volunteered their time in car line, Helping Hands, the library, in the classrooms, at parties, and during exploring, we say a heartfelt thank you.

You helped us make this year a safe, happy, and rich experience for the children in our care, and we truly appreciate all you did!

Athletic News

Sports Physicals and Parent Consent and Release Forms

Don't forget to get your summer physical appointments with your family physician now. To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, you are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that next year's physical be taken after April 1, 2007 (link to form).

The FHSAA are also requiring that every school must have on file a parental consent and release form (green sheet) before a student-athlete can participate in any form of physical conditioning regardless of when such conditioning occurs. These forms will be required of any athlete who participates on a team, works out in the weight room, or does off-season conditioning. You can download these forms below.

If you are an incoming sixth grader, a new student to Shorecrest, or have never played on a Shorecrest team, you will need to turn in a copy of your birth certificate to the athletic office to establish eligibility with the state.

Athletes will not be allowed to practice until all their paperwork has been turned into the athletic office.
