Mr. Pruitt's Studio Art and Intro to Studio Art students work diligently on various projects to complete their work before the Celebrate the Arts Competition deadline. |

• Tenth grader Samantha S., who received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award on Monday at the Upper Division assembly. Susan Lawton, director of volunteer services for United Way of Tampa Bay, presented her with a letter from President Bush, a letter from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, a personalized certificate, and a Bronze pin.

"I was contacted by Volunteer Florida to nominate a local greeter for the President's trip to Tampa Bay last year. Since I had just read an E-Bytes article about Samantha's efforts on behalf of the troops overseas, I suggested that she be considered," Lawton said.
In addition to her work to benefit U.S. troops overseas, Samantha has volunteered her time through Interact Club for various projects including the collection drives for Brookwood Home for Girls and the Holiday Feast. Off campus, she's worked with children through the Dali Museum and shadowed physicians through Medical Explorers. She participated in the 2006 Relay For Life as a member of the cross-country team.
According to Interact Club advisor and faculty member Kathie Newton, at the time Samantha was first nominated for this award, she had just created posters for the Holiday Feast and volunteered to make two chocolate pies. "Whenever I need assistance with any project, she jumps right in," Mrs. Newton added.
Says Mrs. Lawton, "As a Pinellas County resident and a Shorecrest parent, I am proud of the service Samantha offers to our community. I took great pleasure in presenting the award to her and am confident that Samantha will continue to positively impact our world."
The Middle Division students will take their WrAP tests this week. After a practice all school writing, the students are ready to take the two-day writing test. Students are given a writing prompt and are asked to write a first draft, revise, and then prepare a final draft. Parents should be aware that there is a special schedule on the two testing days.
The test will run between 9:50 and 11:00, so we ask that students are not pulled from school during that time. Also, there will be no homebase advisories on the two testing days; academic classes will run until the 3:10 bell.
On Wednesday, Shorecrest Middle Division parents were invited to visit Middle Division classrooms. Mr. Davis began the session asking parents to compare the innovative practices and positive experiences that they would see their children enjoying to their own "junior high" experiences.

After two periods of classroom visits, the group reconvened and shared the positive things that they saw. Dr. Schoolman and Mr. Davis then concluded with a discussion of some aspects of the Middle Division that students and parents can look forward to in 2007-08. Dr. Schoolman plans to feature this information in an upcoming Middle School "Nuts and Bolts" e-mail newsletter.
Ms. Ann Harris, a consultant for the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) will be visiting Shorecrest to speak to parents of students in the Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions who are taking the ERB tests this spring. Ms. Harris will be speaking in the Janet Root Theatre on Wednesday evening, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. We invite you to join us to learn ways to read the test results and to gain insight into the way the test is constructed, administered, and graded. It should be an enlightening evening.
A field trip on Friday the 13th? Absolutely! The seventh grade went to MOSI in Tampa and were lucky enough to dissect a sheep's heart and lungs. This was the first time this year that the seventh grade has dissected, and they all did an excellent job.

Next the seventh graders were able to make their own individual DNA visible and look at a map of one section of DNA. After attending the labs, the students went to the IMAX theater for a viewing of Aliens of the Deep. It was an excellent film comparing the exploration of the ocean floor to astronauts exploring new planets in space.
This "field trip happening" was made possible because of the willingness of our seventh grade parents to chaperone. The entire seventh grade wants to thank the parents and the principal, who took time out of their day to come on the trip with them.
The sixth grade went on a field trip to Sarasota to see an outdoor art exhibit. The exhibit is entitled Embracing Our Differences and focuses on diversity and tolerance. The special thing about the exhibit was that Shorecrest students had a piece of artwork displayed there alongside other student and many adult artists.

The artwork was the Pieces For Peace puzzle that has been featured in exhibitions at the Florida Holocaust Museum and Tampa International Airport. It was a great day to see the exhibit and be a part of such a meaningful experience.
Blood Drive on CampusThe last blood drive of the school year will be held on Tuesday, May 15, from 7:30 till 2:00. Parents, faculty and staff, and students age 17 and older are urged to donate.
Prom "It's the most wonderful time of the year."
Within the next few days, you should be receiving your invitation to the Prom on May 18 at the Vinoy Sunset Ballroom on Snell Isle. Tickets are $65 per person and include a buffet dinner. Tickets will be available for sale next week with Mrs. McKay.
Payment should be made in the form of a check made out to Shorecrest, as cash will not be accepted. Guests from other schools will have to be registered with Shorecrest (with their phone numbers for emergency purposes).
So enjoy this fun evening and purchase your tickets as soon as you can.
The ninth grade physics class "played" with water during the Liquids units.
The students learned about the polar nature of water and why it is called the "universal solvent." As they "drove" their water droplets across the wax paper, they observed the cohesiveness of water as well as its surface tension. When droplets of different colors joined, diffusion was observed.
This hands-on activity was a lot of fun as well as educational. Click here to learn more, get a copy of the water wheel, and to view more pictures. Physics is Phun!
Mrs. Carnes and Mrs. Dattilo were delighted to be a part of the recognition ceremony on Monday, April 16 for the Upper Division students. They were there to recognize and to thank all of the hard working and dedicated National Honor Society students who devote many afternoons to tutoring and helping the students who attend the after-school Study and Learning Center in the Middle Division. Each member usually works for eight sessions during a school year, and some are able to contribute more time.

All of the members of NHS stood to be recognized and the three officers and their sponsor came forward to receive gifts of appreciation from The Learning Center. Emerson "Doc" Littlefield has been the NHS sponsor for many years, and this year's officers are Lizzie M., President; Pav B., Vice President; and Taylor K., Secretary / Treasurer. They make the difference! We could not do it without them!
On April 19, 1995, around 9:03 a.m., at the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City...
Every year, on April 19, a member of the Connelly family (Aaron '03 and Jacob '04) who came from Oklahoma City, quietly places flowers at the memorial plaque marking the Shorecrest Interact Club's tree dedication that took place a number of years ago. To honor those lives lost on that horrendous day, this year Aaron and Jacob's grandfather, Mr. Gene Lichter of St. Petersburg, carried on this Connelly tradition at the special request of Aaron.

The tree and plaque are located just outside the College Counseling Center entrance adjacent to the Upper Division deck. Thank you, Mr. Lichter and the Connelly Family.
Gabe N. was selected as one of seven winners from 6500 international student entries for the Florida Studio Theatre's Young Playwright's Festival in Sarasota. This is the second year in a row he has been chosen for this honor.
Gabe's play, along with Petar Y.'s There It Is, The Sea, will be performed at the Gorilla Theatre, in Tampa, starting May 3.
Twenty-three students and teachers were invited to attend a "make your own sundae" party in the library for reading nine or more books from this year's Sunshine State list. This state reading program is open to all students and teachers in grades 3-6 and to qualify to vote, participants must read at least three of the books on the list.

There were 23 voters who went above that number - some even read all the books on the list. They discovered that the pleasures of reading can sure be sweet! Congratulations to them and all the faculty and students who participated this year!
This is the message sent by the Alpha students, who were pretty awesome themselves when they celebrated their parents on Friday! The children serenaded their audience in the Student Center with songs reflecting not only their love for their parents, but also many things they have learned during the year.

After the short program, the parents accompanied the children back to the classrooms where they were presented with special gifts and cards created just for them. The messages in the cards were completely personalized as the children had dictated descriptions of their parents and included what they like to do together. A special snack shared together culminated the special event.
Mrs. Lipan's class has developed quite a repertoire of songs about America. They have learned seven this year, including the Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, My Country 'Tis of Thee, and This Land Is Your Land.

Each morning, one of the flag helper's duties is to reach into the "Magic Hat." and pull out a card with the name of a patriotic song they will sing that day. The class reads the name of the song together and sings it after the pledge.
This week we welcomed back Karl Tremmel, a revered former Shorecrest teacher. Karl will be replacing Jill Densa during her maternity leave.

Mr. Tremmel already knows many of the children from previous years, Chess Club, and substituting this year. Welcome back, Mr. T!
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, people around the world have been celebrating Earth. They have celebrated its beauty, its strength, its life. This year, students in the Lower Division are expressing their love for the Earth and are pledging to change at least one small thing in their lives to make sure the Earth remains our home forever.
They have joined others from around the world and declared their Planetfesto by creating a six-inch panel on the Internet. The goal of this project is to create a living manifesto of love and action, one person at a time. It will take 262,965,120 people to help create a ribbon large enough to circle the planet. What can you do to help? Go to http://www.planetfesto.org/.

Every parent and teacher I know feels like we have lost children, teachers and colleagues this week. The tragedy at Virginia Tech is another shocking reminder of our vulnerability. I have been encouraged to remind and inform parents of the safeguards we have in place at Shorecrest. In fact, I have written about many of them throughout the past year.
The reality is we are vulnerable. Yet, our greatest safeguard has little to do with photo ID cards, cameras, gates, fences and efficient lock down procedures. They are important and necessary. However, our knowledge and our relationships with our children, our employees and other members of our community are the most important safeguards available to us. When adults and students are sensitive to the behavior and feelings of those around them, we at least have an opportunity to be supportive and to intervene before a crisis emerges.
One of the attractive qualities of being in a relatively small school community is that we know each other. We come together with some basic common values in regard to the importance of learning and the importance of courteous and respectful behavior. However, these things alone do not lead to a safe and healthy environment. One must have the compassion and at times the courage to confront or report behavior that is potentially threatening to an individual or group. Being sensitive to the behavior and attitudes of our own children as well as those of others is essential. Our counseling staff is available to work with children and their families when issues emerge.
My heart goes out to the families and friends of the students, professors and other staff who were killed by the gunman. However, my hope is that we will be able to use this nightmarish moment as a time to strengthen our resolve to reach out to those in need of comfort, friendship and support.
