2007 Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award Nomination

The Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award was established by the Shorecrest Parent Association in 1984 as a commemoration of Janet Root's innumerable volunteer efforts and as a means of recognizing other outstanding Shorecrest volunteers. The award plaque hangs in the Central Administration Building. It bears Janet's name and the names of the past years' recipients.

Many wonderful people give their time, energy, and effort to Shorecrest each year. If you know of someone whose contributions have been outstanding, please nominate that person for the 2007 Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award. Without your input, a worthy volunteer might not be considered. Furthermore, names of individuals receiving nominations are kept in the Shorecrest Parent Association file since past nominations may be a factor in selecting an honoree.

The Selection Committee has adopted the following criteria for choosing the recipient:

  1. Length of service to the Shorecrest community
  2. Service in a variety of areas, i.e. Booster Club, Fine Arts, Library, Grade Level Representatives, Shorecrest Parent Association, etc.
  3. Positions held as a Committee Chairperson and Committees Served

All nominations must be submitted on the Award Nomination Form to be considered. Feel free to obtain volunteer details from the nominee (this does not have to be a confidential nomination). Forms are available at all SPA meetings, on E-bytes, and will be sent out in the mass mailing.

Nomination forms are due by Friday, April 20, to Mary-Ellen Howells via e-mail at mareh24@aol.com, or mail to 127 Bay Point Drive, NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33704. The 2007 Janet Root Volunteer of the Year Award winner will be announced at the Shorecrest Parent Association Spring Luncheon on May 9, 2007.

Upper Division

Community Service Day 2007

Over 200 Upper Division students and faculty members took part in the annual Community Service Day on Friday, March 9. They volunteered at various locations throughout the St. Petersburg community from the Alpha House to the Weedon Island Preserve.

In keeping with the annual tradition, each grade level had a different theme for their service activities.

The seniors remained on campus and hosted 31 Academy Prep seventh and eighth graders. They divided up into four groups and each group took turns among various activities: improv with Mr. Leavengood; art with Mr. Pruitt; gym with Ms. Bartlett; and field with Coach Hayford.

acting practice

The juniors volunteered at the Alpha House, American Cancer Society, American Stage, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald Houses (East & West), St. Petersburg Free Clinic's Food Bank, and the YMCA's Gills and Harbordale facilities. Faculty members Ms. Gaglio, Ms. Burke, Mr. Fall, Mr. Ma, Mr. Henderson, Ms. Newton, Sra. Andres, Mr. Heller, Mr. Napadano, and Ms. Peck accompanied the various groups of juniors to their activities.

Most of the sophomores, whose theme was children and animals, remained on campus to help set up for and work with Shorecrest kindergartners through fourth graders for Field Day. The rest went to PARC's Discovery Learning Center, Pet Pal Rescue, and Riviera Day School with Dr. Hamilton, Mr. Moore and Mr. Field, respectively.

The freshmen were responsible for the environment. A large group, accompanied by Mr. Schneider, picked up litter along the canal on the north edge of the campus. Another group went to Boyd Hill Nature Preserve with Mr. Ellenburg to help prepare for Wildlife Week. Sra. Powers and Dr. Littlefield accompanied a group to Tampa Bay Watch where they repaired and restored the salt marsh and cleaned up the beach. Ms. Hathcoat and two freshmen cleaned a section of Weedon Island, where in just over two hours they picked up seven large garbage bags of the trash that comes in with the tide around the mangroves along the bay.

All the groups returned to campus to enjoy a Subway sandwich lunch, provided courtesy of the Shorecrest Parent Association, and later gathered in the Janet Root Theatre to reflect on their day of service before they set out to enjoy a week of spring break.

Spring Break in France

After ten years, Shorecrest French Exchange is still going strong!

Twelve Upper Division students, along with French teacher Jacqueline Carnes and Dean of Faculty Richard Beaton, returned from an eventful spring break spent at our sister school in France. The Shorecrest/Lycée Pierre Bayen exchange is in its tenth year and is still changing students' lives on both sides of the Atlantic.

After hosting the French students here for two weeks in February, the Shorecrest group flew from Miami to Paris on March 8. From Paris, a bus took them to the heart of the Champagne region of France to meet their host families. The Lycée Pierre Bayen is the most prestigious lycée (high school) in Châlons-en-Champagne, which is a city of about 100,000 inhabitants on the banks of the Marne river. While there, the students lived with their host families and went to school every day.

Two excursions to the cities of Reims and Strasbourg as well as an overnight in Paris gave them a broader glimpse of France. Highlights of the trip included the European Parliament and the cathedral in Strasbourg, a visit to a champagne cellar, the cathedral and basilica of St. Rémi in Reims, a visit to the chateau of Chantilly and its amazing stables, and a boat ride down the Seine river to see the famous monuments of the City of Lights. They were received by the mayor of Châlons-en-Champagne as the American flag flew proudly next to the Tricolor outside the lycée during the entire visit.

But more than a sightseeing experience, the students lived the life of "typical" French teenagers for ten days. They attended classes, ate in the school cafeteria, took busses, enjoyed family conversations and television in the evenings. They made new friends and found common bonds with young people who turned out to be "people" first and American or French after that. And all this, using a foreign language that they are learning right here at Shorecrest.

There were many hugs and tears as they said "au revoir" in the falling snow outside the big doors of the lycée on Monday. As one participant said "This was a life-changing experience. I can't wait to go back and study in France one day." And another student said, "I'll never be the same. I wish I knew every language in the world so I could talk to everyone in the world!"

As part of our mission to make global citizens of our students, Shorecrest is, indeed, fortunate to be able to offer them such a wonderful opportunity. A hearty "merci beaucoup" to the Shorecrest host families, the French and American participants, the French and American teachers and chaperones who plan and facilitate the exchange and to the Shorecrest administration and Board of Trustees for ten years of support for this very worthwhile project.

Middle Division

Report Cards

Student report cards for the third quarter will be sent home to Middle Division families on Monday, March 26.

Lunch Special

On Friday, March 9, our parents hosted a special lunch for the Middle Division students. It was catered by Tijuana Flats, and the burritos and quesadillas were enjoyed in a picnic-like atmosphere on Haskell Field. After an extended lunch period, students broke into grade-level groups. Some students performed their raps from music class, watched Mulan and compared that movie to their studies in history, made Latin American inspired crafts, played video games on a life-sized projection, or enjoyed touch football on the field.

Community Service Day

The Middle Division will have a special morning of service activities on Friday, April 20. The event, two days before Earth Day, will have an environmental theme for two grade levels, with the sixth grade involved in a community clean-up effort and the eighth grade following up with an ongoing environmental sea grass in-class project.

The fifth grade will be starting their animal care project that will culminate in an end of school year field trip, while the seventh grade will be engaging in campus beautification activities in and around the quad area. Su Stevens, the Shorecrest Service Learning Coordinator, has worked with local organizations to develop partnerships with groups such as Keep Pinellas Beautiful (sixth grade) and Tampa Bay Watch (eighth grade). She has worked with parent partners such as Michelle Ginocchio and with educators including Oceanography teacher Michele D'Ambrosio to develop programs that are beginning to blossom and are becoming ongoing.

at Fort DeSoto
Ms. D'Ambrosio and students worked at Fort DeSoto in December.

It is our shared hope that these activities will spark future service initiatives and activities among our Shorecrest Middle Division students. Indeed, this is already built into the fifth and sixth grade initiatives and is evidenced by a group of eighth grade girls (whose Gandy area afternoon project was featured in a previous E-Bytes) who are moving forward with plans to follow up on their coastal clean-up efforts.

The day will begin at 7:50 a.m. with a normal morning meeting. After the service activities on and off campus, the Middle Division will reconvene at approximately 11:45 a.m. to allow each grade level to share details of their efforts. Students will be dismissed at 12:10 p.m. on this day, although lunch service and supervision of students required to remain on campus will be provided.

Three Cheers for...

• Our Digital Film Imaging students who won the Award of Merit at the Student Surrealist Art Exhibit sponsored by the Salvador Dali Museum. The exhibit is a juried competition for Pinellas County middle and high school art students from public and private schools.

Seniors Owen L., Broghan C., and Dusty S., and junior Sean S.

The exhibit featured over 100 works produced in various media. The judging was from over 400 entries, and 12 award winners were selected. Congratulations!

• Sixth grader Courtney C., who spent her Spring Break attending the Jr. National Congressional Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.

Congressional Youth Leadership

Courtney first traveled to Philadelphia to examine the events, leaders and values that led to the formation of the United States. She investigated the critical factors surrounding the Declaration of Independence and focused on the ways in which the U.S. Constitution influences life in the United States - and how we, as citizens, influence the Constitution.

In Washington, D.C., Courtney convened with her Leadership Focus Group to engage in a First Amendment simulation where she debated and negotiated with her fellow scholars. Courtney then investigated the legacy of leadership at some of Washington D.C.'s most important historical sites, including Capitol Hill, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial and the White House.

At each of these sites, Courtney learned how leaders use their voice to take a stand and make a difference. In the evening, she worked with her LFG members to create a social organization to serve as their own "voice of change" for a special topic that impacts local communities.

Courtney also traveled to Harper's Ferry, located at the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. This beautiful area was the site of abolitionist John Brown's daring and ultimately unsuccessful raid on a federal armory in 1859. Courtney, along with park rangers dressed in historical garb, engaged in a variety of simulations such as making fake bullets, scrubbing laundry, participating in military drills and learning some folk dances that mimicked life in America during the years leading up to the Civil War.

• Senior Broghan C., who engaged in a signing ceremony for West Point, March 9, 2007. Friends and family gathered at his home to witness this event. Coach Phil and Sandy Hayford were present along with other Shorecrest representatives as Broghan signed the certificate of appointment with intent to play football.

signed up for West Point

West Point's head coach, Stan Brock, has thanked Coach Hayford for being instrumental in Broghan's decision to play for West Point. Congratulations, Broghan!

• The Cub Scouts who collected almost $100 for Relay for Life's Team Freedom in less than two hours by fund raising outside Gateway Publix. The scouts raised awareness of cancer and the Relay for Life event while earning their Citizen Badge.

As the afternoon wore on, they became better speakers and started strategizing on how to better position themselves to collect more donations. They were all very polite and enthusiastic and received a lot of praise and positive feedback from the public. Great job!

Early Childhood

Parent Chat on Monday

Join Betty Gootson in the Student Activity Center at 8:10 a.m. on Monday, April 26. We will be discussing parental concerns about children's development, social issues, and any other topics people may have on their minds. Younger siblings are welcome!

What Sticks?

The newest center in the Alpha Exploratorium features several kinds of magnets.

magnets

The children are enjoying the process of discovering what can and cannot be picked up using these scientific instruments. They especially like forming chains of things that will stick together!

Budding Authors

The Junior Kindergartners' developing love of books and growing interest in reading is evident when the children embark on book-making projects. While teachers often provide story starters, it is very exciting to watch the children initiate and follow through on their own ideas.

authors

These days, the children often spend time in the Exploratorium creating lengthy volumes on topics of their choice. They use a variety of art mediums to illustrate and either "write" their own text or dictate it to a teacher. Maybe one day some of these children will return to Shorecrest as visiting authors!

Developing Healthy Eating Habits

eating a tortillaParents often lament about their children's poor eating habits. During snack time the children are encouraged to try new foods and thereby expand their diets. While including an element of choice sometimes will spur them on to try something different, having them participate in their food preparation is an even better way to get them to eat. Even simple things work, like letting them roll turkey and/or cheese into their own tortillas!

Lower Division

Writing is Fun!

Third graders have been busy learning about different literary devices to help make their creative writing and poetry come alive. They are studying similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole.

onomatopoeia

Using a multimedia program called MediaBlender, children work with partners to illustrate a different device each week. Once pages for each device are complete, they will use a storyboard to organize their pages, learn how to create buttons to link them all into one presentation, and add sounds. Look in future editions of E-Bytes for links to their final presentations.

onomatopoeia

Above are samples of their wonderful poetry using onomatopoeia, words that describe the sounds objects, people, and animals make.

Field Day

On Friday, March 9, the Lower Division students participated in their annual field day. The students showed their team spirit by dressing in their team's color and enjoyed the beautiful day while playing various water and relay games.

Field Day
(more photos)

The Upper Division student volunteers served as team leaders and event coordinators. The day culminated with a student favorite, the teachers competing on the obstacle course! Fun was had by all!

Locks of Love

The Lower Division celebrates Brittney R.'s cutting her hair for Locks of Love!

Kindergarten Journals

Three kindergartners paid a surprise visit to Mrs. Jennings' office to share their most recent journal entries.

journal reading

Senna, Sophie, and McKenna had all written about what they would like to be someday. It looks like we have two potential teachers and a TV broadcaster!

Junior Kindergarten Chat

It was great to have an opportunity to chat with many of our JK families about our kindergarten program. I look forward to staying in close touch. Diana Craig, Director of Admission, is also delighted to give anyone a tour who may be interested.

Gorilla Theatre Young Dramatist's Project Winners

Petar Y.'s play There It Is, the Sea was chosen as one of eight winners of the Young Playwright's Festival at the Actors' Theatre of Santa Cruz. It will be performed as a staged reading with professional actors and a director in Santa Cruz, California on April 27 and 28. Congratulations to Petar. Petar will not be able to attend (it's the same dates as 42nd Street) but will receive a DVD of the performance.

In addition, Petar and Gabriel N.'s plays (There It Is, the Sea and Strand in the Closet) were both chosen to be produced at the Gorilla Theatre. Petar and Gabriel both will receive $250 royalty and a membership to the Dramatists Guild, as well as the thrill of seeing their play produced on the Gorilla stage.

Gabe N. and Petar Y.

In addition to our two winners, Gabe N. and Petar Y., two of the Honorable Mention plays are also by Shorecrest students, Alex N. and Jonathan V.
