Relay for Life

Relay for Life

Relay Update

We’re seven weeks and counting until Relay For Life on March 30-31! So far we have 33 teams and nearly $20,000 raised.

Have you joined a team?  How are you planning to raise money? Are you coming to the event and walking a lap with us? It's all for a great cause - to fund and find a cure for cancer.

Most of the teams this year are headed up by students, and they’re busy fundraising with all sorts of creative ideas.

Zack F. from Team "Them Awesome Sixth Graders" (our apologies to the sixth grade language arts teachers) interviewed eighth grader Austin F. of Team "Austin's Mitzvah," who received the "The Hope for Tomorrow" award given to outstanding youth from the American Cancer Society last September for his dedication and contribution to last year’s Relay.

  • Q. Why do you Relay?
    A. My mom had breast cancer, and my aunt had lung cancer.
  • Q. How much did you raise last year?  What is your goal for this year?
    A. I raised $2,100 last year, and I am aiming to beat that amount this year.
  • Q. What are your best ideas for raising money?
    A. I like selling things.  My favorite idea for things to sell is t-shirts.
  • Q. Why do you think people donate to you and the American Cancer Society?
    A. People everywhere have been touched by cancer, and this is their way of making a contribution. Cancer affects so many people.
  • Q. What is the best part of Relay?
    A. The best part of Relay is the atmosphere that it creates and the ability of the event to bring people together.
  • Q. What is one thing that every team should not forget to bring to Relay?
    A. I would definitely recommend warm clothes!

We'd like to know what your team's doing to raise money for Relay For Life. Please contact Mrs. Stevens at sstevens@shorecrest.org or stop by the Middle Division office anytime. For more information about the event - form a team, join a team or donate to a team - click here.

Some responses to last week's poll:

What is the perfect Valentine's Day gift?

Knowing you are loved.
- Mom

A card from your cutie and flower. The card with his or her handwriting says how much they care and is more personal. And the flower shows they took time out to go get it for you!
- Student

Flowers! No fat and not too expensive.
- Mom

To me the best is when your child makes you a homemade card and maybe a cigar box decorated with "Oh How I Love You, Mom" inside. I am looking at it now. It has glued fabric with a pasted poem. He is 14 now but I cherish those gifts the most.
- Parent

A homemade, from-the-heart card from your children! A sure keepsake!
- Mom

My buddies are my gifts.
- Eighth grader

Math books!

A big, cute teddy bear.
- Eighth grader

Getting a guy to ask me to the V-day dance... Duh!!
- Can't help being a blonde

a girlfriend
- lonely tenth grade guy

A boyfriend!
- Freshman

A surprise kiss from a guy. Just so you know... whoever is reading this, take a chance. Even if you don't know if the girl likes you or you don't know if she would go out with you. Surprise her and ask her... 99% she will say yes. Don't look too far, she could be right in front of you. Try it. It's bound to work.
- Eighth grader who needs a guy

I would love being in the world of Harry Potter! Oh wait...
- Harry Potta4ev

Well, Harry Potter would want Voldemort to disappear and his parents back because that is his hearts deepest desire. He might also want Sirius and Dumbledore back. I would want Harry Potter and to go to Hogwarts. You don't know this... but I'm a wizard. I am just not old enough to go to Hogwarts! I will leave this school soon to travel to England and go to Hogwarts!
- Harry Potta luva

Chocolate!

Duh! Chocolate! The best food ever.
- Fifth grader

A box of chocolate.
- Sixth grade anonymous

A box of chocolate, maybe a rose, ok, anything expensive.
- Kisskiss

A tootsie roll - 4 something sweet...
A drop of water - to slide by the days together...
A flat screen 50 inch computer so we can stay connected...
A 25 carat diamond and gold ring so we are shining together...
A new flashy car so we can drive places...
And other expensive stuff to make me happy.
- Rich girl

The best gift is a box of chocolates and a bundle of roses! Maybe even, a secret admirer card... ooo!
- Middle schooler in love!

LOVE
Love can build a bridge,
Between your heart and mine,
Love can build a bridge,
Don't you think it's time,
Don't you think it's time?

I love you all! XOXOXO
- Loving and puzzling fifth grader

My perfect gift would be a toaster. They are just so romantic! I hate burnt toast. But if you toast it right, it is a beautiful meal. I like toast MMMMM...
- Fifth grader

Fun little games to play, that are really easy. For example, a necklace that tells you your love future.
- Person

To give for girls: Jewelry! (maybe something with a stone in it?)
To give for guys: I have NO idea!
To give to a friend: CANDY!
- Valentine guru

Roses and a $118 necklace.
- Lover

Love to your parents!!
- *cough* Mature seventh grader

The best Valentine's Day gift would be lots and lots of candy and a really personal note.
- Student

A smile!
- Ms. J

A ring.
- First grader

An iPod and a Wii. I love video games and
music.
- Valentine's lover

Environmental Issues

Environmental speakerThe eighth graders were impressed on Thursday by a presentation from Dieter Gromadzki and John Anderson from IMR Environmental Equipment Inc. They explained how companies around the world buy their combustion gas analyzers to test for carbon dioxide and other emissions into the atmosphere.

Students asked intelligent questions about the environment and viewed how breathing through one of the analyzers records human carbon dioxide emission. This presentation was a follow-up to an Oceanography class unit on the science of global climate change.

Curriculum Fair Rescheduled to April 13

The date for the Middle Division Curriculum Fair has been changed from the original date of Friday, February 16 to a new date: Friday, April 13.

At this event, current Shorecrest parents in grades five through seven will be invited to attend classes in their child's projected grade level for 2007-8. (Note: This year's fourth and eighth grade parents have already engaged in and will have other "transitional events" designed for them.)

We apologize for this late change and look forward to a day of sharing our Middle Division classroom activities in April.

Valentine's Dance

The seventh and eighth grade students are invited to the Middle Division Valentine's dance on Friday, February 9. The event will be held in the Student Activity Center and will run from 7:00 to 10:00. The dance will cost $5, with all of the proceeds donated to the Relay for Life event. The Student Council is looking forward to seeing the students there!

Sixth Grade "Brown Bag Lunch" Event

Shorecrest Sixth Grade teachers will be hosting a "brown bag lunch" event for sixth grade parents from 12:45 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. on Monday, February 26. At the event, members of the teacher team will offer demonstrations on how to best utilize the Shorecrest website to access the teachers' key information.

The teachers and members of the Middle Division administration will then join together to offer constructive tips regarding safe Internet use. Please bring your lunch to the Student Activity Center and the sixth grade parent liaisons (Michelle Ginocchio and Judy Holland) will supply iced tea, soft drinks and dessert! We hope that sixth grade parents will join teachers for an informative and educational afternoon of presentations and discussion.

A Taste of High School

Upper Division World History teacher Ron Heller delivered a lecture to all eighth grade classes to provide them with a sense of what awaits them in the fall.

Mr. Heller

As a counterpoint to Mr. Dionne's lectures on the "Roaring 20s" in the US, Mr. Heller talked about the "Sullen 20s" in Germany during the hyper-inflationary period in Weimar Germany.

Candy Grams

Valentine's Day is almost here. Have you bought a special Valentine for your special Valentine?

To help you with your Valentine's Day shopping, Team Green Eyes will sell candy grams during morning break and lunch periods from Feb. 5-13. Be sure to buy one for your Valentine and support Relay for Life! Candy grams are only $2 each and will be delivered on Feb. 14 to the recipient's advisory that afternoon.

hearts motif

Sales will only take place during morning meetings and lunch periods from Feb 5-13, so be sure to find a Team Green Eyes team member and buy yours today. Supplies are limited ... don't miss out. Be a sweetie and buy a Candy gram. For more information please e-mail Jean Johnston or see Ms. Cobb.

All Together Now

The eighth grade girls in physical education class worked on teamwork activities in the aerobics room. After a few failed plans, they constructed a simple runway that would enable all of them to choreograph a dance.

Upper Division

Glissando

On Tuesday, February 6, the Upper Division was honored to welcome Sue Carole DeVale on campus for a discussion of the evolution of the harp and a demonstration of this ancient instrument.

An ethno-musicologist, Dr. DeVale is one of the world's premier authorities on the harp. She has played with a number of major orchestras, with some very well known names (including Sammy Davis, Jr.), and played the harp music in both Shrek movies, an accomplishment which established her with the student body!

harpist

Dr. DeVale brought with her a half dozen harps, some historical reproductions and some more modern harps, and she used "Greensleeves" to illustrate how the harp's shape and embellishments over time affected the tone of harp music and the skills required to play it well. She concluded the assembly with a selection of tunes designed to highlight modern harp music - from the classical style of the late 19th-early 20th century to the lush, rippling sound of the harp which is familiar to most listeners.

Astronomy Club

The Astronomy Club of Shorecrest ventured away from the bright lights of the big city to better visualize the sky and all of its wonders. Mr. Napodano brought Shorecrest's major league telescope and focused in on many interesting celestial bodies.

Key Club at All Children's Hospital Benefit

The Key Club had a great turnout for the 5K/10K Run for Pediatric Services benefiting All Children's Hospital, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Baywalk.

Even though the event started at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, a total of sixteen Key Club members showed up for this event. The participants included Brooke D. and Natalie H., who had both played a tough soccer game the previous night. The Key Clubbers helped pass out water to the runners and directed the runners through the course.

(large photo and another)

It was a great experience that showed how much Key Clubbers care and are willing to serve our community. Afterwards the Key Clubbers enjoyed pizza and ice cream. All members enjoyed this fun annual event that supports the greater Tampa Bay area.

Strength and Endurance and Fun!

The elective PE class "Strength and Endurance" continues to look for exciting ways to get fit and have fun! Recently the class has worked out in the weight room and aerobics center for three days a week, and then the students have been off to experience other challenging activities. On Fridays we have been invited to Games One, a recreation center at 201 38th Avenue North, to challenge each other at Laser Tag!

laser tag

Each week the teams regroup and try different strategies to come out with the best scores. Patrick McClenathan always seems to be on the winning team! Even the teacher, Coach Newton, has improved!

Lower Division

Grandparents Day

The rain did not dare come to dampen the spirit of a favorite tradition at Shorecrest, Grandparents Day. Instead Grandparents and Special Friends flooded the campus with smiles shining brightly. The children waited with understandable impatience to welcome them to their classrooms.

grandparents
(more photos)

Grandparents good-naturedly allowed themselves to be led all over the campus, touring every alcove. Grandparents will always hold a special place in all our hearts.

Granny Comes from Ireland

In the afternoon on Grandparents' Day, Mrs Counts' second-grade students had a special visitor, their teacher's granny from Ireland!

Granny from Ireland

Granny read the children a favorite book,"Our Granny," and served the children Cadbury chocolate and shortbread.

Oldie Goldie Book Sale

Too early for spring cleaning? Nonsense! Let us help. One of Shorecrest's favorite events, Oldie Goldie, returns on March 1 and 2. Collection of used books will begin on February 21, so clear those overloaded shelves and share old favorites. Just place books in the boxes located outside the Lower Division classroom doors or in the Sher Center Breezeway.

Choosing to Be Green

You may have noticed a bright blue car slowly accelerating out of the Lower Division's parking lot. It is a zero emission electric car. Mr. Lee, a fourth grade teacher, worked with his father to convert a gasoline car into an electric car. The car has 20 6-volt batteries that are recharged every night. The car plugs into a normal 110-volt outlet. Not only do electric cars have no emissions, but they also don't use any gasoline, which reduces our dependence on oil. Mr. Lee is glad to sacrifice a newer car to help reduce pollution and global warming.

Rainbow Fish

The children in EC-second grade enjoyed seeing one of their favorite books come to life at the performance of "Rainbow Fish" in the Janet Root Theater. Be sure to ask your child the theme of this story and how it applies to our life skills here at Shorecrest.

Rainbow Fish

Citizen of the Month

Congratulations to our January citizens of the month for the 2006-07 school year:

Citizens of the Month

  • First Grade - Evan S.
  • Second Grade - Riley L.
  • Third Grade - Zachary L.
  • Fourth Grade - Brandee T.

These students exemplify the life skills we teach and practice here at Shorecrest. Thank you, parents, for instilling these wonderful values in your children. You would be pleased to know that they are modeling what you taught them. Thank you for being partners with us in this most important endeavor.

Parents in Mrs. Graham's room helped prepare for the Second Grade Program, "A Small Part of the World," by helping decorate T-shirts and set up props.

Early Childhood

A Very Special Day

The Early Childhood children always love Grandparents/Special Friends Day, and this year was no exception. The children awed their guests with their poise and performance in the theatre.

grandparents day singing
(more photos)

They had great fun showing their grandparents, etc. around the campus and their classrooms. Some of the children gave extensive tours taking their visitors all the way to the gym! It was a wonderful morning enjoyed by all.

Security Gates

To improve our security and ensure the safety of your children, locks have been installed on the Library Lane gates (between the Administration building and the Early Childhood Center). The gate closest to the ECC will be open from 7:25-8:10 a.m. and after 2:30 p.m.

Anyone needing access to the ECC/LD campus between those hours must enter through the ECC, the Administration Building, or the front gates to the Lower Division Building and sign in before heading to their destination.

volunteering

Valuable Volunteers

Our thanks and appreciation go to our afternoon traffic volunteer, Elizabeth Samuelson and also to Sheila Currie who stands in when Mrs. Samuelson is not available. Each afternoon one of them comes early enough to write down the names of the children whose cars are waiting in the Pratt Blvd. pick up area. Their list enables us to move the first group of children to their cars and get the line moving more quickly.

Letters to China

In lieu of their regular visual arts experience, the Junior Kindergartners saw a slide show of one of the schools Mrs. Gootson visited on her recent trip to China. The children talked about some of the ways that the Chinese school and ours are the same and different. They then drew pictures of our school to send to the children at the Minnow Island Kindergarten in China. We hope that the children there will send us some letters and pictures back!

Community Service Pet Project

In conjunction with their upcoming pet show, the Junior Kindergarten is collecting items for Pet Pal Rescue. The following items are needed: toys for any type of pet, sturdy leashes, Nylabones, dog shampoo, cat bowls (stainless steel), rabbit, ferret & guinea pig food, water bottles for small animal cages. Donations may be dropped off at the Early Childhood Center.

Three Cheers for...

• The 27 people who donated at the latest blood drive on campus. It was a great drive, exceeding the goal of 22. Several students giving blood for the first time were encouraged by teachers, staff, and parents who are multi-gallon donors.

Thanks to everyone who participated!

It's Re-enrollment Time!

Enrollment contracts were mailed last week and are due back on February 15. Please be sure to send yours in on time, to reserve a space for your child for fall enrollment. If you have not received your child's contract, please contact the Admissions Office or the Registrar. Available spaces after February 15 will be awarded to prospective students.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Friday, February 2 was Shorecrest's annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day. With over 650 attendees, more than ever before, it was a day to remember! The day began with students performing in the theatre for all of the guests.

grandparents day
(picture pages )

Smiles and hugs were plentiful as students then greeted their grandparents and special friends and shared with them their classrooms, schoolwork, and projects. There were introductions aplenty of teachers and friends to the guests and an overall feeling of pride, family and community. This tradition remains one of the best events of the year!

New Parent Breakfast

On Wednesday, parents enjoyed getting together at the Headmaster's Breakfast for New Families. Administrators were delighted to hear how our newest Shorecrest students are acclimating, and some of our Parent Ambassadors were pleased to re-establish connections with their new families.

at the breakfast

The food was outstanding, and we express heartfelt gratitude to parent volunteer Susan Wehrmann, for single handedly turning out an array of delicious casseroles, fruit, and sweets. It was a wonderful way to start the morning!

Girls Varsity Soccer Makes It To The Final Four

The Chargers won the Regional Final at home last Friday, Feb. 2, against Sarasota Christian in an exciting contest before a big crowd at Haskell Field. Taylor T. scored two goals to put the Chargers in the lead 2-0 at the half. Sarasota Christian came back to score one goal in the second half, but the Charger defense held and the team advanced to the final four in Ft. Lauderdale for the second year in a row. (photo pages)

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, the Chargers faced a fast and experienced St. John's Country Day team in the State Semifinal game. They proved to be too much for the Chargers, winning by a 4-0 score. Shorecrest parents, fans, teachers, and staff traveled to Ft. Lauderdale to show their support. We are proud of the team and coaches and want to thank them for all of the excitement they brought to Shorecrest this year!

Boys Varsity Soccer Season Ends At Regional Semifinal

The Boys Varsity Soccer team played Tampa Prep last Thursday night, Feb. 1, in the Regional Semifinal and lost 7-0 to end their season.

It was a great year for the Chargers and their coaches. They improved throughout the season and it was a tremendous accomplishment to get as far as the Regional Semifinals. Way to go, Chargers!

Boys Varsity Basketball Competes in Districts

The Chargers played in the District Tourney last Tuesday evening, Feb. 6, against Indian Rocks Christian at Keswick. The Chargers lost 65-38 to end their season.

basketball team

Carter S. led the team with 10 points followed by Alex G. with 9 points and Jack S. with 8 points. Thank you to our two seniors Alex F. and Peter C. for their leadership this year.

Varsity Baseball Plays in Seminole Preseason Tourney

The Varsity Baseball team began their season on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the Preseason Seminole Tourney. The Chargers played a tough Seminole High team and lost 8-1. Daniel M. pitched well for the Chargers. The Chargers had two hits by Robby T. and Dan M. Clay B. caught a good game behind the plate and had two great base running plays.

Boys Middle Division Basketball

The Chargers' season came to an end on Friday, Feb. 2, with the Chargers losing 39-31 to St. Paul's in Clearwater. Luke B. and Matt R. had 10 points each for the night, but the St. Paul's pesky zone defense stifled the Chargers offensive attack in the second half. The season was filled with bright spots, and the team finished their season with a record of 13-6. The future looks bright because these young men dedicated their focus and energy to basketball five and six days a week for the last three months.

(team picture)

Our eighth graders will be missed, and we wish them the best of luck at the next level as they are now far better prepared for the challenges ahead. The team's eighth graders include Matt R., Ravi P., Miles B., Brent R., Shawn S. and John S. Their attitudes and tenacious efforts were contagious and served their teammates well.

* E-Bytes correction from last week: Nick N. had his best effort of the season with 16 points against St. Pete Christian, but his brother Luke received the credit. Sorry for the mistake, Nick.

Shorecrest Event Videography by Sunrise Productions

Frank Gibson of Sunrise Productions has been producing the Shorecrest event DVDs this school year. To date, he has filmed Poetry in the Park, Fall Arts Showcase, and the Winter Band Concert. Many families have enjoyed the convenience of not having to bring their camera equipment to events and simply being able to enjoy the performances.

As long as families continue to order DVDs, Shorecrest will continue to provide this service. The DVDs are $20 plus $3 for shipping and handling costs.

Order forms are sent home the week prior to each event and can also be downloaded from the list below. Don't forget to place your orders and take advantage of this convenient service!
