Third Graders Star in "America's Kids"
|
|||||
Lower DivisionThird graders took the stage by storm on Friday, Jan. 26, performing a powerful America's Kids program for proud families and friends. They wowed their audience with their musical talents and knowledge of the history of our country and its music. And, oh could they move!
The enormous cake of the United States was a grand finale to the morning. And, by the way, did you know the children created the entire set in art class with Mrs. Rowe? That's talent! Students Celebrate the 100th Day of SchoolTen bundles of ten equals... ONE HUNDRED would be the resounding answer given by kindergarten and first grade students. January 31 marked the 100th day of the 2006-2007 school year, and the excitement for the annual celebration has been building since August when the students began their official count during their calendar lessons.

Blogging with GatorsThird graders in Mrs. Drexler's class participated in a joint blogging project with pre-service teachers attending the University of Florida. Each third grader was assigned a Native American tribe to research.
The UF college students identified age-appropriate sites for the children to access. After conducting research and gathering facts, the third graders created an Inspiration concept map to organize the content. Paragraphs were posted on a secure class blog. The college students provided feedback by posting comments to the blog. The culminating result was a 6-page MediaBlender presentation complete with illustrations. Petu reflected, "I enjoyed the writing because I felt like I was improving more every time I got feedback." View the presentations, Inspiration maps, and blog at this link. The Arts: "Just Like Me"The Arts Center is once again sponsoring a "Word and Image: Arts in Education Partnership" exhibition. This year the theme is "Just Like Me." The following students' artwork was sent to The Arts Center for possible inclusion in the exhibit: Brennan B., Libby F., Raquel G., Kylie H., Sarah M., Lina M., Cennedi M., Paul R., Jordan S., and Jake S.
We are proud of all of you! Brennan and Sarah were selected by the judges to be included in the exhibit! The exhibition will be on display from February 23-April 15, 2007 at The Arts Center in downtown St. Petersburg. There will be a reception on April 15 where three Awards of Excellence will be announced. Please stop by to look at the exhibit. |

Late News - The Girls Varsity Soccer team won on Friday by the score of 2-1. They will advance to the state tournament in Fort Lauderdale. Departing by bus on Tuesday, they will play the semi-final game on Wednesday, and if they win, they'll play for the state championship Thursday. |
The Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to Naples to play St. John Neumann in a Regional Semifinal game on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 30. The Chargers dominated possession throughout the game and created many good scoring chances, out-shooting Neumann 30-3.
Erin M. started the scoring in the seventh minute, pouncing on a rebound from the Neumann goalkeeper. Erin added a second goal and the Chargers led 2-1 at half time. Jennifer C. and Brooke D. scored in the second half and the girls won 4-1 to advance to the Regional Final against Sarasota Christian.
The game is at Shorecrest on Friday night, Feb. 2. Kickoff is at 7:00 and admission is $6.00 per person (no Charger Cards accepted). Come out and support the Chargers as they look to head back to the Final Four!
The newest face on the Shorecrest campus is Director of Advancement, Gary Butts. Gary brings years of experience as a teacher, coach and fund raiser at Bolles School in Jacksonville and Pinecrest School in Ft. Lauderdale. He is a dedicated school man and is already showing support for the students, faculty and programs at Shorecrest. We are glad he has joined our Shorecrest community.
Our new bookkeeper is Jeff Outwater, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from USF with a Bachelor of Arts. Prior to coming to Shorecrest, Jeff worked at the Abbey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in human resources, payroll benefits, and accounting.
Welcome to Shorecrest, Jeff!
Mrs. Lipan's students began turning their beautiful stuff into unique self-portraits this week. The children started with their heads and chose objects to form their heads and faces.

The next step was to add their bodies. The children thought about body structure and symmetry as they made their choices and put together their designs creating self-portraits that were in some cases almost recognizable and in other cases quite unusual!
The Alpha children spent much of their week getting ready for Grandparents/Special Friends Day and Valentine's Day. They created beautiful mobiles to give their special guests by stringing beds on chenille stems and bending them into a heart shape.

They also created recipes for friendship that are on display in their Exploratorium.
The next Early Childhood Parent Chat will be on Tuesday, February 27 at 8:15 a.m. in the Student Center.
The Upper Division hosted a Town Hall Meeting for eighth grade families on Wednesday evening in the Janet Root Theatre. After welcoming remarks by Upper Division Head Stephen Manella, a panel of about a dozen Upper Division students fielded questions from parents and students in attendance.

Topics covered included academics, college counseling, extracurriculars, qualities and experiences which make Shorecrest's Upper Division so special, what current eighth graders should expect as they come up into the Upper Division - all from the students' perspective. The event was quite well-attended, and we hope that the eighth grade families left knowing that Shorecrest is the place to stay for their students' high school years.

Students in Mr. Napodano's Advanced Honors Physics class have spent the week studying wave phenomena.

These wave tanks are showing the students reflection (bouncing), refraction (bending) and diffraction (spreading), of waves.
Mrs. Peck's ninth grade physics students have been studying momentum and energy. As part of the unit, they performed the familiar "egg drop activity" from the Haskell Stadium bleachers.

The goal of the project was to increase the time of impact for the egg by
creating a case for the egg. If the time of impact was increased enough, then the force of impact would be small enough to avoid breaking the egg!
The student's assessment was not based on success, also known as egg survival (for most experiments are not successful the first time they are conducted). Instead, the students created websites and were graded on their explanation of the experiment, reflection on future designs, and application of the physics concepts to everyday life.
Check out the students' websites to learn more about why boxers "ride with a punch," the importance of airbags in cars, and about the packing/shipping industry as well as other applications of momentum. Physics is Phun!
The 100th day of school was celebrated in Mrs. Minke's kindergarten class by three generations of Shorecrest students.
The current kindergartners were joined by Ms. Bartlett's Algebra II Class. The Algebra class included a former student of Mrs. Minke, Ali R., and Shorecrest alumni Beth Bartlett. The kindergarten students had an opportunity to read books to the high school students and show off their skill and poise.

The next challenge was to repeat an activity for 100 repetitions. Suggestions ranged from clapping, jumping jacks, jogging steps, push-ups, sit-ups, arm raises and many other creative ways to move. The high school students participated and aided in counting. What a fun morning! Both groups of students were thrilled to share this day of celebration together. For more photos, visit Ms. Bartlett's link.
The Shorecrest MyProm Fashion Show will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Janet Root Theatre. Tickets are $5. Fashions from Dillard's will be modeled by the Shorecrest Senior Class. The show will be produced by the Junior Class and is sponsored by Dillard's and by the Shorecrest Parent Association. (image)

• Senior Alex F., who was one of six students selected out of hundreds for an award of excellence at the Art Festival at Temple Beth El last weekend.
Alex won for a two-dimensional digital image piece. Mara Williams, the judge for the Art Festival, was extremely impressed with the high quality of work from all the high schools. Ms. Williams has judged many high school student exhibitions, and she said, "this was one of the best."
• Shorecrest buildings for going green. On January 22, Shorecrest made an eco-friendly change that'll help everyone breathe a little easier. The school began using a line of cleaning products that's better for the environment, healthier for building occupants, and safer for the users.
"We felt a sense of responsibility to be good citizens and model this behavior for our children," Mr. Murphy said about the school's decision to make the change.
"Greening the Cleaning" products, which include disinfectants, cleaning solutions for bathrooms, tub and tile, glass, toilet bowls, as well as mopping floors, provide an "environmentally preferable" alternative to typical cleaning products.
According to Bob Carr of Skyway Supply, who helped Shorecrest make the change, "these products are non-toxic and they have little or no fragrance which is the source of allergies or sensitivities most people have to cleaning products."
The arrival of the Summer Programs 2007 booklet in your mailboxes soon should help take some of chill out of the air. You can look ahead to over 60 offerings in our newly expanded program that has something for students of all ages to enjoy.

Current Shorecrest fourth grade parents will be invited to a special sneak preview of the Middle Division on Friday, February 9. The morning event will feature a tour of classes as well as a chance to meet with fifth grade teachers; Mr. Davis, Middle Division Assistant Head; and Dr. Schoolman, Middle Division Head.
The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the Breezeway in front of the Middle Division offices, and we will divide parents into groups to visit classes. An informational session will follow and the event is set to conclude by 10:15 a.m. We know that the shift from fourth grade to fifth grade at Shorecrest is an important one, and we look forward to getting the process started on February 9! Future events that center on our current fourth grade students will follow.
Those parents who are interested in attending are invited to RSVP to Ms. Linda Wooldridge, Middle Division Administrative Assistant, at x108 or at: lwooldridge@shorecrest.org.
On Wednesday, January 31, our fifth grade students received certificates for completing the DARE program. DARE stands for Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education, and Mrs. McClellan, Middle Division health teacher, coordinated the program with officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The afternoon ceremony featured student speeches, an official speech from a representative of the St. Petersburg city government, and a social gathering that followed the presentation of certificates. During the ceremony, student speeches featured individual student perspectives on what they learned about drugs, alcohol, and making healthy decisions... and the dangers of not making the right decisions. We are proud of our fifth graders and congratulate them for their efforts in DARE this year.
Eric Edwards, a master falconer, was a guest speaker in one of Mrs. Belt's Life Science classes this week. Mr. Edwards brought his peregrine falcon and gave a presentation on falconry and birds of prey.

Mr. Edwards has worked at Six Flags in the Six Flag bird program and also helped open a zoo in Tasmania. The students learned how Mr. Edwards trains and raises falcons. Mr. Edwards also explained the ancient sport of falconry and how to become a master falconer. The students asked many questions and were anxious to hear what the requirements were to become involved in falconry. It was a wonderful experience and one the students will long remember.
The seventh and eighth grade students are invited to the Middle Division Valentine's dance on February 9. The event will be held in the Student Activity Center and will run from 7:00 to 10:00. The dance will cost $5, with all of the proceeds donated to the Relay for Life event. The Student Council is looking forward to seeing the students there!

The fifth graders have been studying music theory and are now putting theory into practice! After sight reading simple piano pieces, the students looked deep into the workings of the music room's upright piano to see how those sounds are produced.

Now, fifth graders are learning how to make beautiful music on the orchestra's best-known instrument, the violin. Everyone's learning that making a sound on the violin isn't too difficult, but making a beautiful sound takes practice! Mrs. Culley is demonstrating how to hold, stand and bow the instrument, and everyone's taking a turn at being class concertmaster.

Lucky for all, several of the fifth graders study the violin independently, and they are making beautiful music for everyone to enjoy!
