Thank you once again to all of our Annual Fund Donors Study & Learning Center NewsOur Middle Division after-school study hall is progressing very nicely, and we would love to have your child join us if he/she has not done so yet. It is a good setting that allows the student to get homework and studying done in a safe, organized and controlled environment with their friends and classmates. We have been meeting in Mrs. Kelly's sixth grade classroom after school to drop off books and backpacks and then proceed out to the canteen for drinks and snacks. After a little down time, we head back to the classroom to check agendas, hear about upcoming tests/quizzes and to begin homework for that day. Mrs. Dattilo is the adult responsible for the study hall, and she is assisted by National Honor Society tutors who are available to help with homework questions and to review for tests/quizzes with the students in attendance. The study hall operates from 3:15 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and Fridays until 5:00 p.m. Contact Jean Carnes at ext. 220 or Sue Dattilo at ext.157. CrestviewsParents of students in Early Childhood through fourth grade are reminded that they can save $5.00 off of the publication price if they pre-order their yearbook before the first of the year. Send checks in the amount of $55 for the 2007 edition of Crestviews, payable to Shorecrest, to Mr. Tony Napodano in the Upper Division. Shorecrest Event Videography by Sunrise ProductionsFrank Gibson of Sunrise Productions has been producing the Shorecrest event DVDs this school year. To date, he has filmed Poetry in the Park, Fall Arts Showcase, and the Winter Band Concert. Many families have enjoyed the convenience of not having to bring their camera equipment to events and simply being able to enjoy the performances. As long as families continue to order DVDs, Shorecrest will continue to provide this service. The DVDs are $20 plus $3 for shipping and handling costs. Order forms are sent home the week prior to each event and can also be downloaded from the list below. Don't forget to place your orders and take advantage of this convenient service! Some responses to last week's poll:Music of the season - What's your favorite?I would have to say the old time Christmas songs by artists such as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billy Holiday. Definitely a Christmas classic. Jingle Bell Rock. Indian music. The one that goes "Ho, ho, ho." I'm so excited for Santa to come to town. I wonder how he makes it across the whole world in only one night. Why don't I ever catch him. Gee, he must be a sneakster. Whatever is on the radio. A Charlie Brown Christmas. Beatles. Harry Potter theme music (there is not one but I'd like it anyway). Harry Potter soundtrack. I usually listen to Jack Johnson, Incubus, and Dave Matthews band, all while playing my game cube in my room. I like "The Wiggles." I don't really get the question but my fav song for Christmas is Oh the weather outside is frightful, and the smell of cookies are delightful, let it snow let it snow let it snow! My favorite season or my favorite music? my fav season is winter and my favorite season music is Christmas music... is there any other? Its probably a toss-up between ODB's Ole' Christmas or Raffi. Santalicious. I like all kinds but my favorite band is Hellogoodbye...but I also like the Clash and the Ramones. Jingle Bells! Handel's Messiah. Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. I love anything by Andy Williams, particularly "Sleigh Ride" and his version of "The 12 Days of Christmas," "A Song for the Christmas Tree." I do also really enjoy Jimmy Buffett's "Up On the Rooftop." Hanukkah music. O Come All Ye Faithful because it's not as known as the other holiday songs and it is unique.... Lower DivisionDear Families,It seems just a short time ago when I wrote in my summer letter that I was delighted to have Herman Parish, author of the Amelia Bedelia books, coming to Shorecrest. His visit in January is quickly approaching, and Herman and I are in close contact planning this opportunity for the children in K-5 to learn more about the creative writing process. The books need to be ordered before we leave for our winter vacations. He will personalize each book according to your wishes when he is here on January 17. I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful learning experience with our children. Happy Reading! Penny Jennings Kids Galore Helping Kids in DarfurThird graders in Mrs. Drexler's class have been working on a very special project. It all began during "This Day in History," a daily lesson in which the students discuss interesting events that have occurred throughout history on a given date. October 24 was the birthday of the United Nations.

Winter RecitalOn Wednesday the third and fourth grade chorus performed their Winter Recital to a packed house. Many different styles of music were mastered for the performance.
The audience loved the version of We're All in This Together from High School Musical, and Rock Around the Jingle Bells, which combined the songs Rock Around the Clock and Jingle Bell Rock, was a show stopper! Congratulations, chorus, for an amazing performance! Early ChildhoodCrawl, Jump, and RollA chance to practice these and other locomotor and perceptual motor skills has provided great fun on the Early Childhood playground in recent weeks. It began with the Alpha teachers setting out an obstacle course for the children. The children did an awesome job of taking turns, waiting for the previous person to give the starting signal, and moving around the course.
This week the children set up their own course, deciding where to put the equipment and how to move over, across and around it. They thoughtfully left it set up for the Junior Kindergartners who also thought it was great fun! Sights and Smells of Gingerbread
Snack during exploring last week was especially popular as the children used cookie cutters to cut bread into people shapes then spread it with cinnamon flavored cream cheese and decorated them with raisins and other goodies. Morning GreetingsMrs. Lipan's class makes sure everyone feels welcome by extending morning greetings to each other during circle time every day.
The star of the day chooses the way they take turns either by using an instrument, rolling a ball, or using their name cards and shaking hands or hugging. What a friendly way to start the day! |

Holiday Food and Gift Drive DeliversOn Friday morning, the Crisp Gym held hundreds of presents wrapped in festive paper and ribbons. New bicycles with bows, electronics, clothing, games and table upon table of food donations were brought to the gym by students in pre-school through grade 12. Each class of students enthusiastically dropped off their gifts with smiles (and some singing). Gazing at the piles of gifts, more than a few eyes were teary at the incredible generosity of Shorecrest families. The gifts will be given to 45 "family groups" resulting in gifts for about 181 foster children in the area. Many thanks to everyone who contributed gifts and time and effort and a special thanks to Paula Van Law and Beth Rosenbluth for co-chairing this drive for such a worthwhile cause. |
This week Middle Division students brought in their National History Day exhibits to be judged in the school's History Fair.

Exhibits were on display in the Student Activity Center for all to see. The students had to show how their historical topics related to this year's theme, Triumph and Tragedy in History.

The top three exhibits will move on to the county competition in January. The winners will have their names posted in next week's E-Bytes.
The fifth grade science classes have been studying the weather with particular attention to severe weather. Living in Florida immediately brings hurricanes into that study. As a culmination to the unit, fifth graders read The Cay by Theodore Taylor in science classes.

During the students' art wheel classes with Mrs. Williams, fifth graders were asked to create a new cover for the book. Each student designed a cover, and each art class chose a cover to represent their section. All of the fifth grade were then asked to vote for the best cover of all. Sydney B. was the winner. The students really enjoyed reading the book and doing this art project.
As part of a research project that the seventh grade life students are doing on cells, Dr. Nagwa Dajani was invited to speak on stem cell research. Dr. Dajani presented to both the seventh and eighth grade science classes. Her speech included what stem cells are, how they can potentially be used to treat many diseases, and uses of stem cells to help regenerate organs in the body.

Dr. Dajani asked the students questions about what they were learning in Life Science and incorporated their answers into her presentation.
The presentation was very informative and helped the students to understand how stem cells are different from a regular cell. The students asked a lot of questions, and Dr. Dajani was impressed by the students' knowledge. Many thanks go out to Dr. Dajani for helping the seventh graders in their cell research project.
"A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit ..."
Young poets are publishing their writing daily on Ars Poetica, the English 7 online conference open to students in Ms. Mercier's and Mrs. Cobb's classes.

O we celebrate you! Keep on writing!
"A poem should not mean
But be."
Ms. D'Ambrosio's Oceanography class had visitor Sharon Grau from Emergency Response, a group that works with various oil companies, to talk to about oil spills, how they are cleaned up, and how they affect Tampa Bay. The students then set up a mock oil spill and used actual materials the professionals use in the field to clean up the oil.
On November 21 the eighth grade went on a field trip to Tampa Bay Watch to relate what they were doing in the classroom to the real world environment. Even though it was cold, the students braved the elements and went on nature hikes identifying species of mangroves, water sources, and birds on the Fort Desoto trails.

They participated in a beach scavenger hunt and trash clean-up at Fort Desoto. They also learned about nautical maps, built boats, and participated in the Oyster Habitat Restoration Project at the Tampa BayWatch education facility. The students got to mix cement and build oyster habitat shelters to be planted in Tampa Bay in the spring. The students had fun learning about the beautiful coastal environment around them. We will be back in the spring to plant our seagrass at Fort DeSoto.
Raina O'Neil from Southwest Florida Water Management District came to speak about the watershed in Tampa Bay. She explained the state of Tampa Bay past and present.

The students were able to simulate different kinds of pollutants in Tampa Bay using the Enviroscope town model. They were able to demonstrate how these pollutants affects the watershed and the overall ecosystem.
Ms. D'Ambrosio swapped classes for a day with Mrs. Scoby's fifth grade Geography classes. The fifth graders have been learning about China, and Ms. D'Ambrosio had traveled to China this past summer.
She dressed in a traditional Chinese dress, showed a picture presentation, taught the students to say "hello" and "good morning" in Mandarin, and showed various artifacts, money, and relics from China as well as answered questions about China.
The Kuumba dancers and drummers visited the Janet Root Theater in November for a wonderful afternoon performance. Middle Division students learned about dances and beats - as well as the storytelling traditions - of West African countries such as Liberia, Mali, and Ghana.

The Tampa-based troupe brought a visiting drummer from Senegal as well! It was a spirited and participatory event enjoyed by all.
Just another reminder for both parents and students who use our after-school study hall in the Sher Center that the schedule will be a normal one for next week but will be abbreviated for the week of exams. We will have a study hall on Monday, Dec. 18 during regular hours, but there will not be any other held for the remainder of the week. Please contact either Sue Dattilo or Jean Carnes if you have questions.
This is a reminder to all those Upper Division students and parents who, earlier in the year, expressed an interest in having their children participate in the study-abroad trip to Sevilla this summer. There are 12 Shorecrest students already signed up for the trip.

Jorge Giroud, the Executive Director of Student Voyage, wants to let the Shorecrest community know that the deadline to apply is December 15, and it looks like the trip will fill before that date, perhaps excluding interested Shorecrest students since there are also students from Canterbury, Admiral Farragut and Tampa Prep who have applied.
If you want your student to travel abroad with us this summer, please get your application in as soon as possible. If you have questions, you may contact Jorge Giroud at 727-470-4928 or Sra. Cary Powers at 727-522-2111 ext. 116.
The second annual Studypalooza will take place in room H4 the weekend of Dec. 16 and 17 in preparation for the midterm on Monday, Dec. 18. Freshmen are invited to come to either session, and both sessions will begin promptly at 10 a.m. and last until 12:30.
Each year Key Clubbers assemble Christmas wreaths and deliver them to campus offices, teachers and local nursing homes. This year Key Clubbers Vince M., Shelby P., Blake F., Taylor T., Pav B., Brittany H., and Mark S. helped bring in the wreaths and assembled them very professionally.

Sami L. helped deliver the wreaths to different offices and teachers on campus. Everyone had a great time putting the wreaths together and putting smiles on people's faces.
Saturday, Dec. 2, the Shorecrest Leo Club participated in the annual St. Petersburg Santa Parade. Shorecrest students joined other Leo Club members from Boca Ciega High School, St. Pete High School, and Admiral Farragut Academy. Students carried banners, passed out beads and candy, and shared the holiday spirit with the crowd. Check out the Leo Club page of photos.

The Shorecrest Leos will host a Christmas Party on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the YWCA Family Village from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. For more information, contact Beth Bartlett.
Committee Heads Bekka G. and Chelsea S. put together a delicious hot lunch from Ya Ya's and the help of other Interact members! The meal consisted of Ya Ya's chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, steamed vegetables and yummy bread and honey butter. Club members donated macaroni and cheese, drinks, salads and lots of desserts; all for only $6! Ya Ya's helped our cause by charging a minimal amount and delivering the meal. We would like to thank John at the 9100 Fourth Street North store and encourage all Shorecrest families to support this restaurant which is under new management. The profits of this endeavor will help buy presents and gift cards for Brookwood Florida Home for displaced girls.
The Upper Division Lifetime Sports class has been enjoying themselves with a variety of recreational games on campus. All are fast paced and aerobically demanding. Recently they have been playing lacrosse in the gym and skills have greatly improved!

This is an elective P.E. class taught by Coach Newton, and new activities being considered include golf, laser tag, and martial arts. This class is usually offered to all students grades 10-12. It is a great place to keep in shape and learn ways to stay active throughout one's future.

One of the nice things about attending a Pre K-12 school is that as a younger student, you have oodles of good role models to look up to. Fourth graders take advantage of this opportunity each year as Dr. Hamilton's peer counselor group goes through a training with the American Lung Association about influencing peers not to smoke.
These impressive young adults then visit the fourth grade classrooms to present why they don't smoke and why the fourth graders shouldn't either. It is very powerful for a young student to see a talented track and cross country runner say that she doesn't smoke because she likes winning races, or a effervescent theatrical student say that she doesn't smoke because it smells disgusting.
To follow up with their powerful personal messages, the Upper Division students share some of the statistics and findings about the consequences of tobacco use. One of the most dramatic moments is when the older students pump up a pig lung that has been given lung cancer. The fourth graders are amazed at how poorly it inflates, and the lesson is a memorable one.

The fourth graders were taught how advertisers try to make cigarettes appealing to youngsters and that tobacco companies need 3,000 new smokers every day to replace the ones who quit or die.

• Eleven year old Shorecrest fifth grade student Julia B., who won the 14-and-under 3.1 mile "Ride and Run with the Stars" race hosted by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office at Ft. Desoto Park. Julia has placed in this event three of the four years she has participated.

• Fourth grader Kathryn B., whose holiday card is on display in Vinoy Park. Her artwork was selected among the top 12 in the Giant Greeting Card Contest displayed along the waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg. She then had to reproduce her entry on two 4' x 8' plywood panels provided by the Recreation Department.

The 12 cards will be on display through the holidays.
• Fourth grader Ali A., who had her first Hollywood movie debut last week in West Palm Beach! She was in a movie with Cole and Dylan Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody).

The movie is scheduled to be out in early 2008 and is currently called "a modern take on a classic Mark Twain story, The Prince and the Pauper." Congratulations, Ali, and we look forward to seeing you on the big screen when it comes out!
• Ninth grader Sami B., who chose to ask for donations instead of gifts for her 14th birthday party. Sami chose Resurrection House as the recipient of over $600 in donations. Resurrection House mailed a thank you letter to express their gratitude to Sami and the freshman class. |

On the evening of Dec. 6, Shorecrest athletes were honored before the Pinellas County All Star Football Game at Clearwater High School. Senior Sam W. was given the "Mike June Courage Award." This is the first year of this special award honoring Mike June, the Palm Harbor head football coach, who passed away from cancer.

Sam was nominated for the award by Coach Hayford because of his perseverance and courage. Over a span of three years, Sam was injured and kept fighting back with hard work in the weight room and rehab. Nick M. was also honored with the academic award for the South team.

Nick M. and Clay B. led the South team to victory while Blair D. and Jackie K. cheered them on. Congratulations to all of our athletes!

The Chargers hosted Tampa Prep on Friday, Dec. 1, and lost 79-23. High scorers for the Chargers were Carter S. and Alex G. with 8 points each.
The Chargers traveled to Keswick on Thursday, Nov. 30, and won 11-1. Goals were scored by Jennifer C. (3), Taylor T. (2), Rachel W. (2), Erin M., Eby O., Carley S., and Brooke D.
On Friday, Dec. 1, the Chargers hosted Out of Door Academy and won by the score of 8-1. Goals were scored by Eby O. (2), Jennifer C. (2), Rachel W. (2), Taylor T., and Erin M.

The Chargers hosted St. Stephens on Monday, Dec. 4, and won a close game 2-1. Taylor T. and Jennifer C. scored the Chargers goals. The Chargers avenged a loss against St. Stephens earlier in the season!
On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Chargers traveled to Indian Rocks Christian and won again by the score of 3-1. Goals were scored by Brooke D., Taylor T., and Jennifer C. The Chargers record now stands at 7-2-1.
The Chargers hosted Out of Door Academy from Sarasota on Friday, Dec. 1, and won 4-3. Anthony H. and Ben S. each scored two goals for the Chargers.
On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Chargers traveled to Indian Rocks Christian and won 4-3. Ben S. led the scoring with 2 goals followed by Chris F. and Jordan S. with one each.
The JV Girls Soccer team traveled to Lakeland on Thursday, Nov. 30, to face Lakeland Christian and lost 4-1. The girls went down early 3-0 in the first half. They came out in the second half determined to prove that they were better than they had shown in the first 30 minutes of play. The girls played hard for the final 30 minutes to make the game more evenly matched. Natalie N. had the lone Charger goal, and Rachel B. had several key saves to keep the game close.
In a rematch of their first game of the season, the JV Girls soccer team faced Tampa Prep at home on Tuesday, Dec. 5. After going down 2-0 early in the first half, the Chargers fought back, quickly tying the game up at 2-2 with goals from Shannon M., and Kelsey C. From that point on it was all Chargers, and they went on to win 4-2.
On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the JV girls soccer team traveled to Bradenton to face St. Stephens. Although the girls came home with a 2-0 defeat, they played a much more evenly matched game than the first time they faced the Falcons. The Chargers had several scoring opportunities, keeping the Falcons keeper on her toes throughout the entire game.
The Chargers traveled to Lakeland Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and won 2-0 to run their record to 3-2. Colin D. scored both goals and goalkeeper Jordan C. made several good saves to help the Chargers get the win. Colin D. now has five goals for the season to lead the team.
Girls Middle Division BasketballOn Friday, Dec. 1, the Girls Middle Division basketball team traveled to Admiral Farragut and won 28-18. Lindsey E. was high scorer with 8 points followed by Sara W. with 6 points.

On Friday, Dec. 1, the Chargers traveled to Admiral Farragut and won 44-9. The team started out strong jumping to a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and 23-2 by halftime. The defensive effort was the best of the year against a team that had a distinct height advantage. The Farragut inside advantage proved to be no match for the Shorecrest defensive intensity throughout the game. The team had a very balanced scoring attack with Nick N. and Dan A. each scoring 8 points.
The Chargers hosted Keswick Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and won 43-20. What started out as a fairly tight contest with Shorecrest only leading 19-11 at the half turned quickly when the Chargers outscored Keswick 14-2 in the third quarter. The full court press wreaked havoc, especially in the second half, and Luke B. got hot, hitting for 19 points and getting 4 assists. Brent R. added 6 points, and Matt R. had 5 rebounds.
On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the Chargers traveled to Sarasota to play Out of Door Academy and won 37-23. Shorecrest started off very sluggish and led only 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. Playing on consecutive nights with a long drive to Sarasota showed, but the team hung together and pulled out a win. We also played a fifth quarter for the less experienced players, and they played well in that 10 minute effort. Leading scorers were Luke N. with 11 points, Matt R. with 9 points and Nick N. with 7 points. Congratulations to the team for getting off to a 6-0 start. Keep up the good work!
The Chargers hosted Out of Door Academy on Thursday, Nov. 30, and won 4-0.
