Shorecrest Parent Association
Please join all Shorecrest parents for our first meeting of the new school year which will be held in the Student Activity Center at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 14. Our guest speaker will be Headmaster Mike Murphy. We look forward to seeing you on the 14th! Volunteer CornerVolunteer to Assist With Big Event: First Meeting September 19 There is a volunteer role for everyone interested in helping, regardless of your time commitment. In order for the 2007 Big Event to be a success, we need your time, talent, resources, community and business contacts, auction items, underwriting opportunities, and ideas. We plan to work hard, have fun along the way, and raise a lot of money for the ultimate benefit of our children! Please consider joining us for this rewarding opportunity. If you have any questions or would like more information about how you can help, please contact Big Event co-chairs Karen Lucas at 727-580-8042 or klcool14@aol.com, or Karen Crowley at 727-580-8082 or ksessions@aol.com. We hope you will join us to work on this project. Be sure to mark your calendar now for the 2007 Big Event on February 23, 2007. We guarantee you won't want to miss it! Calling All Cub ScoutsParents, new scouts and interested boys in grades 1 through 5 are invited to the "Scouts Back to School Night," on Wednesday, September 13th, in the Student Activity Center. The meeting will begin at 6:30 sharp and shouldn't last more than an hour or so. The annual fee is $85 for each scout, which pays our BSA Council expenses and helps fund some of the Pack's activities, awards, etc. Parents, while we would like to have your son attend this meeting, it's not necessary for him to attend for you to sign him up. If parents can't attend either, please contact Del Goforth at the address below. First grade parents of New "Tiger Cubs" will have some paperwork to complete. Also, the boys do not have to go to Shorecrest to participate in our scouting program, so your son may bring a friend who would like to be in scouts. Any questions should be sent to Del Goforth, Scout Master, via e-mail to delgofort@aol.com Guidance SeriesParenting Today's Teenager
Due to overwhelming requests, Geri is returning for a continuation of her parenting series. Last year the group covered some of the foundations of parenting, discussed the goals of misbehavior, looked at the differences between praise and encouragement, and shared some firsthand experiences. This year, Geri's interactive format will tailor the content to the exact information you are looking for - whether it is clarification of some of the concepts or detailed information helping you bring some new ideas into your household. Bring your questions to this great, energetic group. Please e-mail alippincott@shorecrest.org if you are interested in attending or have any questions. Used Uniform Sale - October 18The used uniform sale will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 8:15-11:00 a.m. in the Student Activity Center. Only gently used Lands End clothing may be sold. Three Cheers for...• Mrs. Jarvis and her home base/advisory, who have organized a community service project to benefit Pet Pal Rescue, a local no-kill shelter for cats and dogs. Students have arranged a donation drive for the organization, which will take place from September 5-15. Pet Pal Rescue has posted a wish list at their website: www.petpalrescue.com. All home base/advisories in the Middle Division are encouraged to participate in the donation drive. Students who participate will be eligible for a dress-down day on September 18. In addition to the donation drive, Mrs. Jarvis' home base/advisory will host a car wash with a bake sale in front of Shorecrest on Saturday, September 16 from noon to 4 p.m. Please come out and support this wonderful organization!
Carol Samorajczyk, the director of development at Pet Pal Rescue, came to speak with Mrs. Jarvis' home base/advisory this week. She brought Tommy, a two week old Pit Bull mix, with her to emphasize the importance of responsible pet ownership and to discuss pet overpopulation. If you would like to adopt a pet, Pet Pal Rescue is located at 405 22nd Street South, and they can be reached at (727) 328-7738. Some responses to last week's poll:If you could spend next year in another country, which would you choose? Why?I would spend a year in Africa. Africa is a cool country. Australia, I love kangaroos. Bring it on. Bahamas and/or maybe Paris or maybe Italy or maybe Jamaica! Why such tough choices?! Bulgaria! Return to the homeland! Chile: world class surfing, great wine, great climate, spectacular scenery. I'm so there! Djibouti because it is awesome. And the capital is Djibouti, which is cool. England because half of my family lives there. I would choose Europe because of its beauty! Europe, I've always wanted to go to Europe because its so beautiful and amazing. I want to be a fashion designer in Paris when I grow up. Does Hawaii count? Ummm... whichever country Hogwarts is in. If I had the chance to travel to another country, I would go to India and volunteer at the Hamara Club. I would be helping others with development and empowerment of street and working children. Help professionals reach out to street children in selected areas. I would say Ireland except that it is really cold there. Because I am from Ireland...I'm Irish! Ireland because I'm all Irish and haven't ever been there so it would be really interesting! Italy! Because it is such a beautiful and culturally rich country! And that's where my family is from! Japan, for sure, for the temples and gardens. I'd go to southern Mexico, see the pre-Columbian temples and practice my Spanish by working with the rural people. Pluto. Did you say country or planet? Oh, wait, it's not a planet anymore. Why? The weather's probably better. Obviously....I would be in Portugal. Portugal is the best country in the world! Sudan. If I'm going to spend any amount of time in another country I would need to serve a humanitarian/environmental purpose. That area desperately needs aid, and for us to pay attention. I dunno, I really like USA. Well ya know I like the U.S. so I'd stay put. I would spend it in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan has more goats than any other country in the world. The ratio of goats to humans is 1 goat to 5 humans. This is because Uzbekistan has a small population, and their climate is set up just for goats. Upper DivisionFreshman RetreatDespite the threat posed by Hurricane-turned-Tropical Storm Ernesto, the freshman class and several members of Shorecrest's faculty and administration spent last Thursday and Friday at Cedarkirk, a conference center east of Tampa, on the annual Freshman Retreat.
The retreat is intended to give the freshmen a chance to come together as a class at the very beginning of their first year in the Upper Division. Working with Pathfinder Outdoor Education staff, students participated in a variety of experiential programs designed to increase social and personal responsibility in a safe, collaborative, and noncompetitive environment. Activities included various challenge courses, a walk in the night woods, and canoeing - all in small groups.

Approaching HomecomingHomecoming is early this year. Events begin on Tuesday, Sept. 24th, but Upper Division students are already making preparations. They're working on video skits and banners, designing t-shirts, and learning athletic skills usually associated with the opposite sex. Lisa Peck has put all the details on a Homecoming Web Page. Keep reading E-Bytes for more information about the week's activities.

Lower DivisionBack-to-School NightThank you to all of our Shorecrest families for a truly memorable Back-to-School Night.
Faculty indeed appreciate your support, and we are all looking forward to One of the highlights of Lower Division Back-to-School Night actually happens the next day when children are able to read the notes their parents have written the night before.IRS - Interactive Response SystemsThanks to the generosity of parents at last year's auction, the Lower Division was able to purchase two interactive response systems (IRS) for use in the classrooms and computer lab. An IRS is a set of 24 wireless clickers (or remotes) and a receiver that is connected to a computer. When a question is asked in a typical classroom, usually only one student can answer. However, by using clickers, every student is engaged and focused and is free to answer questions in a non-threatening environment. Even the shyest student becomes an active class participant. Fourth grade students used our new clickers to review what they have learned about the five oceans and geography. Second graders will use the clickers next week to test their knowledge about North America. Faculty and students alike are thrilled with the new technology! The teaching and assessment opportunities provided by IRS are endless. In addition, faculty enjoyed the experience on a personal level when Mrs Jennings used the clickers to conduct a survey in an opening faculty meeting! |
Hat Day in First GradeIn celebration of the first graders completing their first story, "The Hat," the children arrived at school sporting their own favorite hats. It was a delightful array, with many of the hats individually created.
The hat theme continued as the children shared their writing, created number stories, and enjoyed viewing each other's hats. Hard Working Safety PatrolsSchool drop off and pick up have become smooth operations in close partnership with the hard working safety patrols. These young people work as volunteers, and parents and teachers alike know that arrival and dismissal would not work without them.
To help recognize their efforts, each week a Golden Patrol is announced. Golden Patrols are those patrols who go above and beyond in their responsibilities, are consistent in following through at their posts, and are courteous and helpful in every way. To help identify these superb young people, Golden Patrols are given a golden badge to wear on their uniforms for the week. Our first two Golden Patrols have been Trent B. and Kathryn B. As you see fourth graders wearing this badge, please congratulate them as they have worked hard for the honor. Parents, please also consider complimenting specific patrols who you see going above and beyond to Mrs. Burton, the Safety Patrol advisor, so that the patrol can be considered for Golden Patrol that week. Compliments can be e-mailed to kburton@shorecrest.org.

Concert Band (grades 7-12) morning rehearsal schedule for the week of Sept. 11-15. All rehearsals are 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the Band Room.
During the past week I have been practicing handshakes with students in the Lower Division. Many parents and grandparents would be pleased to know that the lessons you have taught your children regarding the appropriate way to shake hands and greet a person have taken hold. When a child offers a warm, firm shake and looks me in the eye, I know that someone has been giving lessons on this important courtesy in our culture. I have asked these children who taught them to shake hands, and parents, grandparents and teachers are most often given credit.

We have all met people who take great pride in their bone-crushing firm handshakes. We have all met people who seem to approach looking someone in the eye as a personal endurance test. We have also met people who use a handshake as a way to let you know that you matter and that they are focused on you. These handshakes reach beyond common courtesy. They become acts of respect.
So, we will practice. We will practice handshakes and other acts like holding doors open for adults or people whose hands are full, and we will ask if he or she would like some help. We will pick up after each other. We will let people move into a line when we see they are being blocked.
When everyone is working together to teach and model courtesy and respect, a culture of integrity is created. Day after day when I read the paper and hear the news, I am reminded that I along with the other members of this community am fortunate to be in an environment that is interested in reaching beyond common courtesy in an effort to show our children what it is like to be in a community of character.
It can start with a handshake, a look in the eye and a warm smile.
Cheers!
The students in Latin IA, IB, and I are learning that what they say was probably said first by the citizens in ancient Rome. These students have completed posters and flyers showing the words in our new Honor Pledge that have Latin roots. These signs will be laminated and will soon appear on classroom doors, so that all students will realize the "Latin Connection."
In addition, the Level I Latin students are learning the Pledge of Allegiance in Latin. Each student has a copy and will recite the pledge at the beginning of class. The US flag in the Latin classroom was donated by Mrs. Reneta Yanev from the Lower Division. The Latin version of the Pledge of Allegiance will attune a student's ear to the sound of the language, will teach more English derivatives, and will showcase some of the grammar constructions that will be taught during the year.
Latina vivit!
The torrential rain never materialized, and Shorecrest parents arrived in droves for the Middle Division Back-to-School Night event last Tuesday. Dr. Schoolman called the evening to order in the Janet Root Theater with his Brazilian drum - a "tamborim" to be exact - and he introduced Shorecrest's Headmaster, Mr. Murphy, who welcomed Middle Division parents to the event.
After the introduction of teachers and a review of some areas of Middle Division life, parents then began following their child's schedule, moving from classroom to classroom and getting to know their child's teachers, curriculum and assessment requirements in the process. Parents were reminded to send in their updated e-mail addresses and to check teacher web pages for the most up-to-date information.

The evening ended at 9 p.m. with refreshments, Spirit Wear purchases, and sign-ups with parent liaisons for community service help and other types of assistance. If you would like to sign up for grade level activities, it's not too late to contact your grade level parent liaison.

The Honor Pledge will be the topic of discussion at the first Middle Division Parent Coffee of the school year. The event is set for Tuesday, September 26, at 8:30 a.m. Jean Johnston and Laurie Reiskind, Middle Division's parent liaison leaders, will be working with Dr. Hugh Schoolman, Jonathan Davis, and guidance counselor Ashley Lippincott to develop a series of parent education opportunities for each month's coffee.
Beginning in October, speakers will be invited to our Parent Coffees from both within and outside of the Shorecrest community. Parent education is an important goal of our learning community, and we look forward to seeing many of you at the first coffee!
The Middle Division will hold its annual Academic Honors Assembly on September 21st at 1:00 in the Janet Root Theater. Students who performed at the highest academic standards during the 2005-2006 school year will be recognized for their achievements. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this important event.
Middle Division students will have a chance to serve on the 2006-2007 student council. There will be four officer positions as well as two grade level representatives from each grade. The MD officers will be elected by the entire school but will come from specific grades.
The President will come from the eighth grade, Vice-President from the seventh grade, Secretary from the sixth grade, with the Treasurer coming from any grade. Students will need to submit a candidate declaration to the MD Office. Campaigning will begin at the end of next week.
All eighth graders who are interested in joining the Upper Division Clio Club, please come to an informal meeting at lunchtime in H4 on Monday, September 11th. Dues are $2.
Tactile areas in the Early Childhood classrooms and exploratoriums are often the messiest but are also the most intriguing spots for the children. While our tactile tables are currently filled with water, dried corn cob, and beans, those materials will be changed frequently during the year to include a wide variety of substances.

The children flock to explore these materials, and as they play with them, they learn mathematical and scientific concepts including cause and effect, volume, measuring, comparing, properties of matter, and texture. Talking together and with the teachers about what they are experiencing also enhances language development.

The feel and sounds of the materials are also pleasing, comforting and soothing, even for adults!
Circle is a time for sharing, listening, learning and showing respect. After a bit of time to visit and settle in, the children in Early Childhood gather together to officially start their day with songs, stories, and calendar activities.

As the year progresses, so does the children's ability to listen respectfully, wait their turns, and feel comfortable sharing information with the group.

Not to be outdone, Gold came back with a little offensive firepower of their own when Mike M. galloped 55 yards into the end-zone and John S. made a two-point conversion to even the score. The game ended in an 8-8 tie, proving once again there are no losers when you play Charger football!

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the "B" team played in a heartbreaker in their first game and lost by the score of 24-26. In the second game, the team was down by 8 points and pulled themselves up to tie the game and barely lost 25-20. Coach D'Ambrosio commented, "They came together as a team and supported each other, and I am very proud of their effort!"
Just a reminder that E-Bytes is always looking for great photos of Shorecrest students' athletic events. We prefer to receive them in digital format. Please e-mail the original, unedited file to clingman@shorecrest.org. Thanks in advance!
