Introducing The Learning Center ("TLC")

Shorecrest has a new value added program for all students: The Learning Center ("TLC"). Jean Carnes, Director of TLC, says "these programs help students with study skills, organization, testing and tutoring thereby adding value to the curriculum through student support."

Jean Carnes
Jean Carnes

Jan Miller oversees student services for EC-grade 4. In grades K-4, remediation is available during the school day by qualified tutors who are available on campus.

In Early Childhood and Lower Division, students needing speech or occupational therapy will also go through TLC, and the therapy can be received right on the Shorecrest campus by certified therapists.

New to the campus is the Learning Lab, located in the Middle Division between the two World Language classrooms. Sue Dattilo oversees the lab where Middle and Upper Division students may drop in for assistance in study skills free of charge. Any student in grades 5-12 can stop in during lunch or free periods to get help with study skills, test organization management, organizational skills, etc.

Sue Dattilo

The Student Learning Center will also be available after school on Monday-Thursday from 3:15-5:30 p.m. and Friday from 3:15-5:00 p.m. The students are supervised by Mrs. Dattilo, along with National Honor Society students who receive community service hours for tutoring. They will help students with their homework, agenda and studying skills.

Upper Division students will also benefit from TLC with PSAT and SAT workshops that will be offered throughout the school year.

TLC will work with you and your children as a team to be certain that your child receives the support that he/she needs. Future goals for TLC include identifying learning styles and parental education through seminars and guest speakers. For any questions related to TLC or costs of the programs, please contact Jean Carnes at ext. 220.

Guidance Series

Parenting Today's Teenager

  • Geri Carter, author of: Parenting Today's Teenager
  • Wednesdays in October (4th, 11th, 18th and 25th)
  • 9:00-10:00 a.m.
  • Administration Building conference room

Due to overwhelming requests, Geri is returning for a continuation of her parenting series. Last year the group covered some of the foundations of parenting, discussed the goals of misbehavior, looked at the differences between praise and encouragement, and shared some firsthand experiences.

This year, Geri's interactive format will tailor the content to the exact information you are looking for - whether it is clarification of some of the concepts or detailed information helping you bring some new ideas into your household. Bring your questions. This really is a great, energetic group.

Please e-mail alippincott@shorecrest.org if you are interested in attending or have any questions.

Some responses to last week's poll:

Alarm clock? Somebody to shake you? How do you get up in the morning?

Mom's alarm goes off at 6:30. She wakes the kids at 6:40. Daddy sleeps till 7. If it's 7:15 and he's not up, we all tickle him!
- Mom

My dad comes in my room and hides under the covers with me till Mom comes in and makes us get up!
- Horse lover/sixth grader

Someone shakes me.
- Fourth grader

I dunno. Everything's a blur that early.
- Senior

I get woken up by an adult. Mommy wakes me up sometimes or my Dadda does too sometimes I don't know.
- Second grader

Very reluctantly to an extremely annoying alarm clock.
- Sleep-deprived mom

I have an alarm clock on my phone.
- Morning person

Alarm clock, then my mom.

Alarm clock and somebody to wake me up!
- Eighth grader who doesn't do mornings

By my alarm clock... unless I go back to sleep and don't hear it... then my mom or dad will wake me up.
- Person

I don't know, probably my mom and sadly the very annoying alarm clock I have to wake up at 5:50 every day! But I still like school!

I set an alarm, but I usually wake up before 5:00.
- Morning person

My cell phone alarm, it's not that annoying beeping, it has a tune.
- Tenth grader

I wake up to the fresh smell of bacon every morning. I installed a speaker system in my room that plays "goat sounds" at 6:15 a.m. every morning too.
- The goat herder

I have a coffee maker set up in my room. When the coffee starts brewing, the sound and the aroma are a gentle and rewarding way to start the day.
- Mom

First I do a few stretches and then I can smell the wonderful aroma of the coffee pot brewing.
- Parent

My dad pours water on my face!
- Awesome person

My brother shoots me with a water gun!

No problemo! I get up at 3:00 in the morning, and I'm always at school by 5:00! Just kidding! I am always first one but never at 5:00 am I in school!
- Joker

Usually Dean Sessions comes in and wakes me up because I'm sleeping on the picnic tables.
- High-schooler

With difficulty.
- Not an early riser

Our dog can tell time and comes in and wakes us up.
- Parent

My mom throws a dog biscuit on my bed and my dog goes after it and jumps on me.

Generally it involves one of my cats - generally the 25 lb. one, jumping on my bed at 6 a.m. reminding me that it's time to be fed.
- Junior

Our cat "Pixel" bites me in the nose because he wants breakfast.
- Parent

Well, I dream about a clock, so when the clock ticks 6:30 I'm up.

By putting my feet on the floor. Is this a trick question?

I get up by my parents coming in and waking me up and turning on my light.
- Girl who's totally awesome

Early Childhood

Back-to-School Night

A great group of parents turned out for the Early Childhood Back-to-School Night this week! The teachers enjoyed meeting and talking to all of the parents and starting to build the relationships that are so important to our partnership.

back to school night

It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about each other and explain our program. The enthusiasm and good humor shared made it an enjoyable and informative evening for all!

Parent Volunteer Orientation

If you hope to volunteer in the Early Childhood Center, whether on a regular or irregular basis, you are invited and encouraged to come to the Parent Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday, September 6th at 8:15 a.m. in the instructional area of the library.

Why Playdough?

The children love to play with modeling dough and doing so is a wonderful fine motor exercise. It also encourages creativity, sharing, and socialization. The best playdough is homemade, and making it is another type of learning activity that encompasses math (measuring), science (how materials react when combined) and cooperation.

play dough

Mrs. Lipan's class had a great time this week when they measured the ingredients, mixed them, and then kneaded the dough to get it to the right consistency!

Yearbook Photos

All Early Childhood students will have their photographs taken for the yearbook on Tuesday, September 5. Order forms were sent home on Thursday. If you wish to purchase copies of these pictures, you must return the order form by Tuesday. It is not possible to order the photos after the day they are taken. Children may wear any of the approved uniform options. If children are absent, their photos will be taken on the retake day, October 17.

Kiskissing handssing Hands

The Alpha children are making kissing hand sun catchers for their parents. This project is an extension of The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn which Mrs. Gootson read to the parents at their orientation and the teachers read to the children this week.

The children love choosing the sparkly collage materials, and picking them up and adhering them to the contact paper is a wonderful fine motor exercise.

First Field Trips

The first field trip for each of the Early Childhood classes will be to Crisp Park. All parents who wish to come are invited to join their child's class. On future field trips, the number of chaperones will be limited to an appropriate number for the location. All children and chaperones are expected to travel on the school bus. The date for each class' trip is:

  • Mrs. Moyle's class - Monday, 9/18
  • Mrs. Carson's class - Tuesday, 9/19
  • Mrs. Lipan's class - Wednesday, 9/20
  • Mrs. Samuel's class - Tuesday, 9/26
  • Ms. Uebel's class - Thursday, 9/28.

The children will leave school at 8:30 and return at approximately 10:00.

The Favorite Book

The most popular book in Early Childhood is probably Those Mean Nasty Dirty Downright Disgusting But....Invisible Germs by Judith Anne Rice.

washing hands

The Alpha and Junior Kindergarten teachers all use this book as an introduction to the importance of washing hands and other healthy habits. It is a book that the children clamor to have read over and over again!

Freshmen

Three Cheers for...

• Lauren F., who visited the University of Xiamen in the Fujian Province of China.

China

She was able to meet with the Dean of the International School to discuss summer programs where she can begin to learn the Chinese language. She also was able to visit Thailand and Indonesia with her father.

• Fifth grader Sonia S., who received the Distinguished Speaker Award from the Sikh Youth Federation. Sonia spoke at an international competition in Seattle this past August. Great job!

Sonia

• Hayden L. and a team of teens who traveled to Alaska to work at the Food Bank of Alaska and Covenent House.

The team worked diligently and provided support for the elderly, families in need, and homeless children. Hayden and his team left their mark with the thousands of people that they supported. The group developed friendships, participated in the Great American Bake Sale, and raised over $1,110 for the Inuit families.

Alaska

Hayden learned about the First Nations Culture and found time to go white water rafting, and explore. Hayden and the group took great pride in their work.

• How fun is a car wash with your friends on a hot summer day where you and your friends squirt each other and play in the suds while cleaning dirty cars on a hot summer day? How rewarding is it when all of the money that was raised from the car wash is donated to a charitable organization?

To find out, ask the kids who participated in Mr. Cruise's Community Service and Leadership Camp this summer. These Middle Division children spent a week together representing Shorecrest and serving the community by volunteering their time for various service projects that ranged from stuffing over 250 Christmas stockings for underprivileged children, planting bushes on campus to beautify the Razook Center quad, stocking shelves and helping out in the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army, and raising over $180 for the Ronald McDonald house at a car wash.

Community Service

In between these activities were some ice cream celebrations, competitive games of capture the flag, and bonding with each other. The week of hard work culminated with a fun day of go-carting and pizza at Celebration Station.

Congratulations to these students for making their community a better place, taking an active leadership role, living the school's mission statement and smiling the entire week. These wonderful community leaders are Sydney B., Geoff B., Alex C., Madi F., Zack F., Karenna K., Kadie L., Jackson M., Ashton P., Doug L. and Laura P.

Lower Division

48 Educators Convene

Mrs. Jennings had the largest response yet to the annual BAAIS meeting for Lower, Middle, and Upper Division Heads. Forty-eight educators gathered on Wednesday from Berkeley, Tampa Prep, Admiral Farragut, Out of Door Academy, Wellington, St. Stephens, St. Paul's, St. Mary's, St. John's, Canterbury, Hillel, Carrolwood, Independent Day School, and Academy of the Lakes. Scheduled speakers for the year were shared and opportunities for professional development were planned. The high degree of congeniality and collegiality created a lot of positive energy.

Jeopardy on a Smartboard

During the first week of school, the second grade Spanish classes were able to use the new Smartboard in Señora León-Cone's room. They played a Spanish Jeopardy game in order to review vocabulary from last year.

Jeopardy

The second graders thought it was a great way to review what they may have forgotten over the summer. Thanks to the Annual Fund technology contributions!

Helping Hands

A large group of Helping Hands volunteers gathered for their first work session of the 2006-07 school year. Once again the numbers necessitated an overflow into the Lower Division faculty lounge.

Helping Hands

We were truly fortunate to have so many hands as the projects were many and varied. Thank you all!

Sunscreen

The Lower Division is working hard to help develop good heath habits and safe practices for outside time. The kindergarten classes had a spirited first application of sunscreen before heading out to P.E.

sunscreen

Mrs. Jennings joined in the fun and recognized very quickly the independence of our kindergartners!

Upper Division

Clubs

On Wednesday, the Upper Division operated on a special schedule to accommodate a Clubs Assembly and Sign-up. Representatives from 22 special interest clubs provided their fellow students with an overview of each club's goals and activities. Students then had the opportunity to sign up for the clubs during Break.

With a record number of students in the Upper Division this year, many club rosters showed 30, 40, 50, or more students interested in joining. The rotation of club meetings begins on Tuesday, September 5th. Students are encouraged to keep an overall balance in their lives given their academic, athletic and other responsibilities. Ideally, they should have a genuine interest in any club they wish to join and be active members who attend meetings and participate fully in club activities.

New Students

- by Donna C.

Welcome to two great additions to the Shorecrest community, juniors Meghan A. and Allie W. Meghan has shifted south from her previous home in Chicago, making Shorecrest her sixth school, where as Allie has joined us from China, making this her thirteenth move and sixth country.

new students
Meghan and Allie

Meghan came from a larger school, which was based on a block schedule where there were eight classes but only four taken each day, making the commitment to homework a different adjustment, but one she is getting used to.

Allie's last school was actually smaller than Shorecrest, but she is coping with having to carry around heavy books all day, as the curriculum at her last school was fully based online. A meeting which took place last week as a way to get feedback from all the new students was, according to Meghan, "a good way to see who else was new, and how other people were dealing with being at a new school," and to Allie, "a nice way to meet other people in the same situation as myself."

Both girls enjoy being varsity cheerleaders, which gives them the opportunity to meet students in other grades. They are looking forward to a fun-filled year here with us at Shorecrest! Good luck to Meghan with her singing and dancing endeavors and to Allie with her skill in girls basketball!

Pulse

Mrs. Peck's Anatomy and Physiology class learned to identify 6 pulse points on the body. They were able to locate them using the tactile method and determined their heart rates.

pulse points

Next, they tried to determine if they could find these pulse points using a stethoscope. In addition, they listened to chest sounds. Looks like we have a bunch of future medical professionals here at Shorecrest!

Middle Division

Back-to-School Night

The Middle Division will host its Back-to-School Night on September 5th. The program begins in the Janet Root Theater at 7:00 p.m. and will allow parents to follow their children's schedules. It is a great chance to meet the teachers and get a taste of what is going on in class. Parents, please mark your calendars and plan to attend. We're looking forward to seeing you then!

Visual Arts Club

Mrs. Williams has created a Middle Division Visual Arts Club for students who are interested in studying art in greater detail. The club will meet twice a week and occur during homebase. Each quarter, the club will work on a different art project. Students will receive information and a sign up form to take home. Space is limited, so please fill out the forms and turn them into the MD office as soon as possible.

New Students Share Pizza and Perspectives

Yesterday, the Middle Division administrative team hosted a Middle Division new student pizza lunch. The event provided an opportunity for the 23 new Middle Division students to reflect upon their first two weeks at Shorecrest.

new students

The students arrived on campus from locations as varied as Massachusetts, England, France, and even Shanghai, China! They took time to share their views on their new school, their new classmates and teachers, and how they feel the year is proceeding. It is often nice to be reminded that there are others who are new and sharing similar thoughts and feelings. We encourage both parents and students from our new families to continue to ask teachers, advisors and administrators any questions that they might have.

One of the new students was impressed by the fact that "the students and teachers here were so thoughtful and open." There was general consensus that our school community has reached out to help them as they learned to negotiate their new schedules, their new lockers, and their new environment.

Arts Enrichment

Afternoons in the Middle Division now represent opportunities for students to play an instrument, sing, keyboard, and create! As part of our new advisory period, students can choose to sign up for enrichment opportunities in various artistic realms. Fifth grade students are working with Mr. Buchanan once each week to develop basic computer keyboarding proficiencies. Band students in sixth grade are already meeting with Mr. Glaister on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a joint fifth and sixth grade band rehearsal each Friday. (Fifth graders meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays, and seventh and eighth graders join their high school counterparts in the mornings before school).

A fifth and sixth grade Middle Division Choir is set to begin meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 5th, and will meet with Ms. Culley every Monday and Tuesday. A seventh and eighth grade vocal group will meet every Thursday and Friday during advisory period (2:40-3:10) starting next week.

A yellow form was sent home yesterday inviting fifth and sixth grade visual arts students to join Ms. Williams for a visual arts club every Monday and Tuesday (beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5). A visual arts club for students in grades 7 and 8 is set to take place every Thursday and Friday beginning next week. Students will be admitted to these art enrichment offerings on a first-come, first served basis as space is limited.

Ms. Nelson, our Middle Division Drama teacher, will soon be sending home information about forensics and will offer extra drama rehearsals in the weeks leading up to student performances. All of these arts opportunities are designed to allow students to explore and develop their talents and build upon the "arts wheel" courses in each grade.

Relay for Life

Relay for Life Northeast St. Petersburg is Florida's Rookie of the Year for 2006

This event, which brought together the entire Shorecrest family and our friends and neighbors in Northeast St. Petersburg, raised a total of $115,000, far exceeding the expected $35,000.
