Summer Immunizations and Physicals

School Physicals

Although vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening is required by the State of Florida, the Pinellas County Health Department does not extend its screening programs to private school students. For this reason, we ask that students entering kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and seventh grades provide a school physical form which includes vision and hearing screening. Physical forms for students entering seventh grade should include scoliosis screening as well. All school physicals should be dated less than one year before the beginning of the new school year.

Immunizations

Returning students ordinarily do not require any additional immunizations after Kindergarten until seventh grade. The seventh-grade immunization form should include an adult tetanus/diphtheria booster in addition to other age-appropriate immunizations, and must be signed by the doctor for seventh grade entry.

Sports Physicals

To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, students are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that next year's physical be taken after April 1, 2006. Seventh grade students who are having a sports physical may ask their doctors to include vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening information on the sports physical form in order to satisfy the state screening requirement discussed above.

Thank you, and have a safe, healthy, and FUN summer!

SAT/ACT Summer Preparation

Advanced Learning Centers

Advanced Learning Centers (ALC) will be offering a 4-day introductory SAT course (free of charge to pre-registered students) for all interested rising juniors and seniors. It will be held at Shorecrest Monday, June 5 through Thursday, June 8.

On Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., ALC will administer and proctor a full-length SAT to all registered students. Tuesday-Thursday from 9:00-10:30, ALC's education director Johanna Sambade will conduct a lecture series covering the similarities and differences between the SAT and the ACT, strategies and approaches for specific question types, a review of selected test questions from the administered SAT, content, and pacing.

Following this free introductory course, interested students will be given the opportunity to sign up for a more intensive on-campus summer preparation program either individually or as part of a small group (2-4 students).

  • The first 4-week summer session will run from June 12-July 14.
  • The second 4-week summer session will run from July 17-August 11.

The days and times of the program will be adjusted to accommodate multiple groups (meeting 3 times per week) and individuals (meeting 2 times per week) during the 4-week summer sessions. Students may choose either 4-week session or both. The cost of this program is $480 per 4-week summer session for small group tutoring and $640 per 4-week summer session for individual tutoring.

To register for the free lecture series, or small-group or individual tutoring, call Jonathan Davis at 522-2111 ext. 198, fill out the form to be included in the next school mailing, or download this PDF version.

For more information, call Advanced Learning Centers at 727-381-9722 or visit their website www.thinkalc.com.

Enlightened Learning

Enlightened Learning is offering two Summer SAT Workshops on Shorecrest Preparatory School's campus. Each workshop will span the curriculum for the SAT exam: critical reading, grammar, essay writing, and math. An emphasis will be placed on students taking active control over their thinking processes, identifying and planning how to approach a particular problem, monitoring their understanding, and evaluating their progress.

These workshops will be rigorous, entertaining, and a hands-on approach in order to achieve a foundational proficiency for the SAT exam. Workshops will be administered by Shane Counts and staff of Enlightened Learning.

Each workshop consists of 3-hour sessions for four days, Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Workshop A is scheduled for July 31 through August 3 and Workshop B is scheduled for August 7 through August 10. The cost of the program is $485.

Individual sessions and administered practice tests are offered throughout the summer and school year by appointment.

Please contact Jonathan Davis at 522-2111 x198 for registration details or any other information regarding the program. Or download this PDF form to register.

Please also feel free to visit Enlightened Learning's website at www.enlightenedwebsite.com.

Fourth Grade Moving Up Ceremony
Next year's fifth graders, seventy-two in number, are applauded by their families at the Lower Division's Moving Up Ceremony.

Lower Division

Splash Day

The Lower Division Splash Day was enjoyed by all. Kindergarten through fourth grade took part in the annual water extravaganza.

Splash Day

Each grade participated during their regularly scheduled PE classes. The activities included a slip and slide, water guns dueling, sponge throwing, sprinklers spraying, hose dousing, and dry area activities.

slip and slide

It was a great day for the kids and coaches alike.

The fourth graders were honored in their Moving Up celebration on Thursday. Anne M. was awarded Citizen of the Year. The fourth graders and their parents enjoyed a slide show of Lower Division memories before heading up to view the student's websites. Each family received a CD, which included among other memories electronic portfolios from their years in kindergarten through fourth grade. We will miss you!

To the Zoo

What a wonderful time the second grade students had visiting the Lowry Park Zoo. The weather was delightful, which allowed the animals to be frisky and social within their own habitats. With prepared clues in hand, classes set off to identify various animals along the way.

second graders at the zoo

The children were excited to see the baby elephant, Tamani, in action running after the birds and tossing and catching a large stick with his trunk. Giggles were shared by all! The stingray tank and the primates' home were also stops of interest. It was evident that babies have a natural curiosity no matter what the species.

Karl TremmelTribute to Mr. T

Last week the Lower Division gathered to pay tribute to Mr. Tremmel who has given 35 years to the teaching profession. Past and present students played favorite selections on the piano and gave a memorable poetry reading to celebrate Mr. T's inspiring children to love classical music and poetry.

A moving slide show depicted his current class's favorite times with Mr. T which ranged from math to morning meeting, to current events and the famous dance parties. Following the tribute, the students enjoyed lunch and chess, ending with the limbo as they danced out of the quad. We are so glad Mr. T will be substituting next year!

New Friends from New Zealand

As our new friends from Nelson Park School in New Zealand might say "Kia ora tatou." (Hello everyone.) Located in the coastal city of Napier on the North Island, Nelson Park is home to 400 students ages 5-11. During the month of May, the second grade classrooms have sent e-mails as well as individual letters to students there. They also used digital cameras to take pictures around campus. The pictures were used for a slideshow and sent off this week.

New Zealand bridge
Students build a bridge that can remain standing during an earthquake. New Zealand was hit by a 7.8 back in the 1930's, and they just celebrated the 75th anniversary of the quake.

In turn, we have received e-mails as well as some photos. We have discovered that we have much in common and are very much intrigued by our differences. This comparison chart highlights some of the similarities and differences we have discovered so far. We look forward to continued correspondence and have some fun projects already planned for our next school year.

Groovin' in Kindergarten

Mrs. Kawalec's kindergarten class celebrated making their compliment goal with a dance party. The children worked together as a group to earn compliments throughout the year.

disco

When they earned over fifty compliments, they voted to have a party complete with a "disco ball," dancing, and refreshments. Everyone had a groovy time!

Flags Around the World

Congratulations to Henry W., Cai B., and Adrianna W. for learning the countries represented by the flags in the breezeway.

Thursday morning Mrs. Culley and Mrs. Nelson organized a fifth grade Talent Show in the Little Theatre. Students performed instrumental and vocal renditions, amazing their audience with previously unknown talents. After the show the fifth graders took their annual trip to SPCA where they donated over 1,000 pounds of pet food and toured the facilities. Bowling was the name of the game on Friday morning, and a good time was had by all!

Sixth Grade Roller Skating

The sixth graders completed their semester tests on Thursday, and they celebrated the end of the year with their teachers on a roller skating field trip on Friday. This annual event marks the end of two wonderful years in the Sher Center, as our students move up to the seventh grade. See you on the Quad next year!

Does anyone else think that these two eighth grade teachers, Mrs. Brill and Mrs. D'Ambrosio, resemble each other?

Very Proud

"C" T. was so proud to share her news about her sister with her fifth grade friends and Middle Division teachers. Apisadaporn T., "A," a Shorecrest alum, graduated from Tufts University last weekend, cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. "C" was especially pleased to learn that our pre-algebra teacher, Mrs. Black, also graduated from Tufts. Congratulations!

Early Childhood

Saying Thank You

Mrs. Samuel's Alpha class recently toured the school to sing their appreciation to school community members who have helped them during the year. Along the way, they sang the Thank You song to the library staff, the nurse, and Mr. Murphy.

singing

When they stopped in the Administration office, they sang to the entire building staff and the administrative team which was just about to meet. Mr. Murphy invited the children into his office where they had lots to ask and say to him!

One Last Fling

The EC playground was transformed into a wet wonderland to help the children celebrate the coming of summer! There were water-filled pools containing games like ring toss and tic-tac-toe, boats and ducks to float, and pelican scoopers to catch fish. The children also enjoyed blowing lots of bubbles and covering themselves with shaving cream!

bubbles

Indoors, the Alpha children painted real fish to make prints on their beach bags, decorated pails and shovels, and used sea life shaped sponges to create personalized beach towels. Snack was an ocean created with graham cracker crumbs, blue Jell-O, and gummy fish.

The JK students enjoyed a wide variety of games including The Chicken Limbo, pineapple bowling, and frog to the lily pad bean bag toss. Fishing for prizes from the loft was a favorite thing to try. Making wooden sailboats and sun catchers were both popular activities and creating their own chocolate and sprinkle covered frozen banana pops for snack was lots of fun!

limbo

Many, many thanks to all of the room parents who coordinated things and to all the parents who came to help and enjoy the fun!

It's Been a Wonderful Year

As the 2005-06 school year draws to a close, we wonder how it passed so quickly, yet was so full of experiences, learning and fun. The students in both Alpha and Junior Kindergarten have grown so much, developmentally and physically, that it is hard to reconcile them with their pictures in the yearbook.

Early Childhood

We want to thank all of the Early Childhood parents this year for truly being our partners and providing so much help and support. Your children are so much richer for your involvement. We wish all of you a wonderful, healthy and happy summer, full of fun and family times. To those who will be returning to Early Childhood, we say "See you in September." To those moving up or on, we say a fond farewell and please stay in touch; you will always remain in our hearts.

Summer Goals

Mike MurphyWhen I am asked, "What do you think children should do during the long summer break?" I resort to fundamental thinking - nurturing the mind, the body and the spirit. In a pre-school - grade 12 school like Shorecrest, the range of activities for our students will be as varied as the ages and interests of the children. But I do think some fundamentals are worth remembering:

  1. Work (or regular chores) is important. Work reinforces the importance of contributing to the family and/or the community. Work for pay or work as a volunteer exposes our children to people and activities they may not encounter in their neighborhoods or at school. Students develop a greater sense of independence and self-worth when they realize they can contribute in a positive and constructive way.
  2. Read more than what is required. Go to the public library. Not only are there good books in the library, but a visit to the library also exposes our children to the wide range of people who are active readers and learners.
  3. Be physically active. Free play is valuable. People who know how to keep active are generally happier and healthier than their sedentary counterparts. Students who want to excel or just play in a sport in the coming year need to use the summer to enhance their skills.
  4. Participate in favorite activities. Allow enough time for children to do the activities that are naturally interesting to them. Balance is important, but one cannot become a great violinist, trumpeter, writer or artist unless he/she has time to develop the skill.
  5. Blend alone time with social time. It is important to have down time. No one should need to be entertained all the time. On the other hand, it is equally important for our children to learn how to share, cooperate and collaborate with others. Being with people their own age is important.
  6. Keep Safe. I really like the commercial that asks," It is 11:00. Do you know what your child is doing?" It becomes very easy to become overly lenient, especially during the summer. Stick to your family rules. Our children are better when we establish reasonable guidelines and rules.
  7. Sleep more.
  8. Have at least one banana split or whatever your favorite summer treat may be.
  9. Try something new.
  10. Be ready to return to school. Be sure to review the student handbook with your children. Bring them to school ahead of time so they know where they will be going on the first day. Feel free to call the appropriate Division Head or me if you or your children have questions about the new year. Review the Honor Pledge, "I agree to be personally and academically honest and to treat others with respect and courtesy" with your child(ren). We will increase our emphasis on honorable behavior in the coming year.

I wish you a happy and safe summer. Thanks to all of you who have helped to make my first year at Shorecrest stimulating and uplifting.

Cheers!

Baccalaureate and Commencement Photos Online

Baccalaureate 2006

Baccalaureate festivities took place on Sunday, May 21 in the Janet Root Theatre. Andrew N. welcomed the crowd, stating that "the one common denominator that truly united our class is humor," and he invited everyone to "enjoy this time and laugh, at least a little." Headmaster Mike Murphy advised the seniors to "take a breath, slow down and reflect on a wonderful experience."

Seniors

Seniors Chloe M., J. J. R., Mindy L., Angela G., Sam S., and Tayllor S. all spoke about their unique memories of and experiences during their years at Shorecrest. In addition, the Senior Vocal Ensemble sang "Wasn't It a Good Ride," written by Lee Ahlin, who also sang and accompanied the group on his guitar.

Doc Littlefield

Faculty speaker Dr. Emerson Littlefield gave a humorous and thought-provoking speech to the seniors, beginning with defining the words wisdom, spirit and journey and applying those definitions to their future goals. Dr. Littlefield encouraged seniors to understand that Life is the greatest journey, both in daily progress through the world and one's own private journal of self-definition. He described one's life journey as being defined by what one seeks, how one gets there, and what one becomes.

Baccalaureate Speaker

Closing comments were presented by Caitlyn C., who stated that she was in "no hurry to leave" Shorecrest which has been her second home and yet "no hurry to stay either" since the "time has come to emerge from this safe, comfortable place and explore a whole new world."

singing

Following Caitlyn's speech, the Senior Vocal Ensemble sang the Shorecrest Alma Mater, which concluded the ceremony. Seniors and their families and friends then enjoyed dinner, the senior video, and the senior tribute by Stephen Manella at the Saint Petersburg Yacht Club.

Chloe M. has received the Wofford Success Initiative Scholarship and was named an 1854 Scholar. Congratulations for these personal accomplishments and for bringing honor to Shorecrest.

Moving Up

moving up
In a lighthearted assembly at the end of the last day of regular classes, sophomores move to the seats reserved for juniors, who have come forward to the seniors' area.

Ninth Grade Health/Interact Relay Team

Did anyone see the freshmen in the lime green t-shirts at Relay for Life selling smoothies? [large picture] Well, they were very enthusiastic and successful, raising a total of $1230!

Almost totally initiated from within their class, they designed t-shirts, decided to make fresh smoothies and sell fitness bars. They decorated their tent, took shifts with the blenders and made sure that someone was always on the track walking, sometimes barefoot!

There were nineteen team members in all including two sophomores, and Mrs. Newton is awfully proud of them! Special thanks to the following wonderful parents: Mrs. Robin Sherma, Mr. David Geldbart, Mrs. Kathleen Shanahan and Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Jerome. Look for big things from this group during Relay for Life #2 next spring!

Sports Physicals and Parent Consent and Release Forms

Don't forget to get your summer physical appointments with your family physicians now. To be eligible to participate in Shorecrest athletics, you are required to have a physical every year. The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that next year's physical be taken after April 1, 2006.

The FHSAA are also requiring that every school must have on file a parental consent and release form (green sheet) before a student-athlete can participate in any form of physical conditioning regardless of when such conditioning occurs. These forms will be required of any athlete who participates on a team, works out in the weight room, or does off season conditioning. You will receive this form in your summer mailing or you can pick it up in the Athletic office.

I'd love to go somewhere in a big city, such as New York City, Boston, etc. I really like NYU.
- Student

I will be attending college in the near future. I hope to attend NYU, or at least any college in New York.
- Up-coming high school graduate

State university because I want to go to Ohio State. I was born in Ohio, so it makes me feel good. Ohio State means smart people like me and nice people like me.
- Fourth grader

Far away from Florida - Pepperdine please.
- Up-and-coming sophomore

Definitely out West to UC Santa Barbara - Go Gauchos!
- Parent

Miami! Go Canes!
- Seventh grade girl who loves Miami!

FSU!
- Boy crazy tomboy

I would love the opportunity to go back to Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. I had a wonderful college experience, and I don't think I'd change much about my last three years there. Freshman year (this time), I would actually make it to my morning classes, and I would study and prepare for class rather than spending all that pre-exam time praying for a miracle. My freshman GPA was less than stellar.
- Teacher

Foreign! I want to travel and learn.
- Habitual drifter

I either want to go to UF, Notre Dame, NYU, or Harvard.

UF In Gainesville (Go Gators!). Or FIT in NYC.

Probably UF or a college close to Florida. Go Gators!
- Gator fan

UF.

I would love to go to UF. That's where my dad went, and I admire him a lot. He got a degree from UF and NCSU. It's evidently a really hard school to get into...but I think it would be worth going through the processes and long work to apply for college at UF.
