Chess Update

Big news from the May Chess Tournament held at the Sunshine Center and sponsored by the St. Petersburg Chess Club. Shorecrest was third out of 34 teams from all over the bay area, ranging from elementary to high school, with our plucky crew of first, second, and third graders.

chess

In the K-2 division, second grade Elizabeth F. won the tenth place trophy; second grader Billy W. won the eighth place trophy; first grader Edgar D. won the fifth place trophy, and first grader Chase B. took the fourth place trophy. In the K-5, competing against fifth graders, Second grader Cole C. won a gold medal; second grader Aaron S. won the eighth place trophy; third grader Matthew J. won the seventh place trophy; and first grader Cai B. took the fourth place trophy. In the K-8 division, competing against middle school students, third grader Nathan I. got a gold medal and second grader Ben C. a silver, which is certainly an equally outstanding result.

We will have Chess Club until the end of school. Summer chess activities include a Thursday morning group that meets at the St. Petersburg Chess Club from 10:00 a.m. to noon ($5.00 per student per day) and you can drop in as you may.

What a Relay!

Mike MurphyDo you think the trustees, parents, coaches, athletes, administrators and builders of the track and Haskell Field ever imagined that the space would be used for a 15-hour pep rally to cure cancer? The first Northeast St. Petersburg Relay for Life event [more photos online] at Shorecrest this past weekend exceeded the expectations of everyone involved in the planning and execution of the event. We nearly tripled the goals for participation and fundraising. We had a wonderful and touching celebration for survivors of cancer and benefited from having people of all ages work and play together for a great cause.

HOPE

We look forward to future partnerships with the American Cancer Society. We owe three big cheers to Christie Pratt from ACS and to April James and Carol Whaley, who served as chairs of the event. All three women brought energy and spirit to our first Relay for Life.

Relay for Life on the track

It would be hard to leave an event like Relay without feeling a sense of hope for a better future for our families, our children and our friends.

Thank you to the Shorecrest community for your generosity, hospitality to our guests and for contributing to a spirited event.

Cheers!
- Mike Murphy

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first annual Relay For Life of Northeast St. Petersburg at Shorecrest Preparatory School! I cannot begin to tell you how rewarding it was to see everyone so excited about participating. Together wChristie Pratte raised over $106,000 for the American Cancer Society. Wow! I just want you to know that there were so many people who had a hand in this success: the team captains, the team participants, the survivors, caregivers, and all the donors. Please remember to write thank you notes or send follow up e-mails to all those who helped your team be so successful. Don't forget all those out of state donors who did not get a chance to see the event. One good idea is to send them an e-mailed picture of your team or something memorable from the night. I would like to again acknowledge all of those who worked so hard getting this event started. The entire committee was truly amazing! Please recognize their hard work when you see them around!

  • April James and Carol Whaley - Event Chair and Co-Chair
  • Shari Fuss and Stephanie Tellios - Survivorship Co-Chairs
  • Mike and Robin Murphy - Luminaria Co-Chairs
  • Jean Carnes and Pat Craven - Team Development Co-Chairs
  • Dave Sharlow - Logistics Chair
  • Gail Razook, Meredith Granese, and Ashleigh Mitchell - Activities and Entertainment Committee
  • Joan Putrino - Advocacy
  • Bob Clingman - Photography

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped prior to and on the day of the event. What an outstanding team effort!

I would also like to acknowledge the teams that registered to be a part of this event. These include:

Love for a Cure, Green Eyes, Go-Golfers, Chargers Administration and Friends, Survivors, Team Freedom, Shorecrest Streetwalkers, Austin's Mitzvah, Penguin Football, Razook Roadrunners, Food, Key Club, Tech Data, Make a Wish, Shorecrest Booster Club, Angel-Ann Anderson, Chick Fil-A, Cool Cats, Charge-Its and Chargers, Guys and Dolls, Interact and Health, FUMC, Squeegee Beckenheims, Senior Girls and Friends, Botanical Babes, Sixth Grade Superstars, Cross Country, Garrett's Girls. Eighth Grade Boys, Jr. Exchange, Gone Fishing, MD Hippies, Runner Girls, and Shorecrest Helping Hands.

Before the event we are separate teams but at the event we are ONE team and it really showed! A big thank you to our fund-raising club teams to date:

Gold Level, raising over $10,000: Go-Golfers and Survivors

Silver Level, raising over $5,000: Team Freedom, Chargers Administrators and Friends, Green Eyes, and Shorecrest Street Walkers

Bronze Level, raising $2,500 or more: Penguin Football Family, Sixth Grade Superstars, Austin's Mitzvah, Food, FUMC St Pete, and Garrett's Girls.

The following teams are just at the point of moving from Bronze level to Silver level: Cool Cats, Gone Fishing, MD Hippies, Razook Roadrunners, and Runner Girls.

Again, thank you! We will be holding a wrap-up party in a couple of weeks to hand out awards. In closing, I hope you all are very proud of the accomplishments you have made in the last couple of months. I get to see the funds you worked so hard to raise benefit the community firsthand, and you are helping us reach so many more families. You are truly making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer!

Early Childhood

Fascinating Fish

Mrs. Samuel's and Ms. Uebel's Alpha classes enjoyed trips to the St. Petersburg Pier Aquarium this week. The children saw and touched a regular sea star and a brittle sea star.

at the aquarium

They saw red drum fish, angel fish, clown fish, lobsters, sea urchins, an eel, a parrot fish and sea horses. Outside, the children listened to the sounds of the shrimp from under the pier. Feeding fish to the pelicans outside was pretty neat, too!

Favorite Artists

During Visual Arts throughout the year, the Junior Kindergartners looked at the selected works of ten artists and experimented with many types of art media using a variety of styles and techniques, with an emphasis on thought and creativity.

As their final Visual Arts experience of the year, they revisited the paintings they discussed over the last nine months. The students reviewed what they remembered about the artists and the various types of art including portraits, still life, realism, abstract, and impressionism. After looking at all of the pictures again, they voted on them and created a graph to determine the favorite of each class and of the grade.

artworks

Mrs. Jotch's class voted for Claude Monet's Water Lilies, which was also the favorite in Mrs. Lipan's class but by a much smaller margin. In Mrs. Moyle's class, Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Georgia O'Keefe's Red Poppy tied for first place. The overall winner chosen by combining the votes of all three classes was Water Lilies with the Red Poppy coming in second.

All books are due back to the school library. If your child has not yet returned his book, please send it in on Monday. If your child has lost a book, please contact Mrs. Smay to settle the account

2006 Spanish Poetry Contest

Every year the Spanish Honor Society of Shorecrest sponsors a poetry contest for those students who are currently enrolled in Spanish IV, Spanish IV(H) and Spanish V(AP). Past winners of the Spanish Poetry Contest have been junior Daniel M. and senior John B. This year the contest included 32 entries. The judges, Sra. Sandra León-Cone, Sra. Teresa Starr and Sra. Linda Grau found the poems to be of exceptional quality and difficult to arrive at one winner. For this reason there is not one winner this year, but two. Yes, a tie.

The first winning poem is entitled Lo que tienes que hacer (What You Must Do). Our poet reminds the reader to trust her soul as one's soul will bring all the answers that the individual needs. The word alma means both soul and spirit in Spanish and the author uses both meanings within the poem. Congratulations to senior Michelle B., a Spanish IV(H) student, for being one of our Spanish Poetry Contest winners.

Michelle

Rachel

The second poet to win the Spanish Poetry Contest wrote a poem entitled El partido de mi vida (The Game of My Life). The writer recounts the victorious 2006 Shorecrest Girls Varsity Soccer Season, writing in particular about the triumphant Regional Championship win over Tampa Prep. The emotional and play-by-play account is also declared a winner in the 2006 Spanish Poetry Contest. Congratulations to sophomore Rachel W., who is also in Spanish IV(H).

Honorable mention for their outstanding poems goes to sophomore Blake F., El hombre; junior Kim L., La esperanza; sophomore Donna C., ¿Qué es el amor?; junior Sonya N., Mi madre; sophomore Jeff R., St. Pete; and senior Evan W., La naturaleza.

Thank you to the judges for their time and efforts in recognizing our students' talents and ¡Felicidades a todos los poetas bilingües de Shorecrest!

A Successful National History Day

Freshmen Joe M., Gabe N. and Alex N. demonstrated their academic prowess at the state level competition in Tallahassee last week.

History Day

Gabe N. won third place in the state for his paper on John Locke and his Two Treatises on Government, and although they did not officially place in the competition, they received high ratings for their exhibit on the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Special Schedule

A reminder that the Upper Division will end its instructional day at 2:03 p.m. on Friday, May 12!

President of SADD speaks to Fellow Students about Prom Night

SADD speakerAndrew C., Co-President of SADD this year, delivered a speech concerning prom, which will be held this Friday, May 12, to the Upper Division students during a special Tuesday morning assembly. He encouraged his peers to have fun but not make poor decisions about alcohol and/or driving impaired.

He reminded the seniors of how much they had to look forward to in college and not to take any chances that would derail their future paths. Andrew spoke honestly and even mentioned he had made mistakes that he had learned from (in the past). His speech was well received and even had some humor in it.

Key Club Supports Relay for Life

This past Friday and Saturday, Key Club captains Jackie K. and Philip V. led the Key Club members as they spent the night at the school supporting the Relay for Life. Key Club members raised money by volunteering at the car wash and selling muffins. Listening to the survivors' speeches was the highlight of the evening. It was a fun night and had many touching moments!

Rainbow of Friends

The kindergarten performance Rainbow of Friends [picture pages] was an incredible culmination of all the skills the children have learned throughout the year. But most importantly, they had a wonderful time performing on the stage and left the audience with full hearts and great pride.

Mark Twain Visits Second Grade

Mark TwainThe second graders have been enjoying reading biographies and have been working hard putting together "living biography book reports." Each student dresses up as his or her famous person and shares important life facts with the class. One of Mr. Tremmel's students, JoAnn T., portrayed Mark Twain, voice and all!

Citizen of the Month

Congratulations to our citizens of the month for April:

  • First Grade - Hans K.
  • Second Grade - Taylor Anne N.
  • Third Grade - Katerina A.
  • Fourth Grade - Kyle M.

These students exemplify the life skills we teach and practice here at Shorecrest. Thank you, parents, for instilling these wonderful values in your children. You would be pleased to know that they are modeling what you taught them. Thank you for being partners with us in this most important endeavor.

Monarch Migration

Every year, monarch butterflies migrate to the warmth of Mexico in the winter and back up to the United States and Canada in the summertime. They are truly international citizens who depend greatly on our gardens during their journeys.

Last fall, our first graders embarked on a symbolic butterfly journey across North and Central America! 'Journey North,' an international organization dedicated to working with schools in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, coordinates a symbolic butterfly migration every year. With the help of Ms. Oppegard in the science room and Sra. Leon-Cone in their Spanish classes, the children made and decorated paper butterflies with brilliant colors and a Spanish greeting for the children in Mexico who would be receiving them.

butterflies

All the butterflies were sent south as the days began to cool, along with those from other schools around the country. This spring, the butterflies have returned, and like real migrating butterflies, not necessarily to the same place. The Lower Division received about 60 paper butterflies from students all across the United States, Canada, and Mexico! It is wonderful to see that even though we all come from different backgrounds and different cultures, the countries of North and Central America have this amazing butterfly migration in common, with very unique ambassadors!

The Florida High School Athletic Association requires that next year's physical be taken after April 1, 2006.

The FHSAA are also requiring that every school must have on file a parental consent and release form (green sheet) before a student-athlete can participate in any form of physical conditioning regardless of when such conditioning occurs. These forms will be required of any athlete who participates on a team, works out in the weight room, or does off season conditioning. You will receive this form in your summer mailing, or you can pick it up in the Athletic Office.

Rising ninth graders heard what it means to be on the Upper Division Student Council and were encouraged to run for class officers. Eighth graders will sign up for specific positions and will deliver speeches after the Band Assembly in the Janet Root Theatre on Monday. Voting will follow in Home Base.

Outdoor Education News

Eighth graders traveled to Fort DeSoto last Friday to complete their annual project by planting the seagrass Spatina. All school year the Oceanography class has been working with Tampa Bay Watch by monitoring and caring for the seagrass that now is planted in Fort DeSoto to restore the habitat back to Tampa Bay.

In addition to planting, students used various field techniques and seine nets to experience true oceanography field work. They participated in an educational scavenger hunt, and had Subways for lunch! Thank you to all the parents and chaperones who helped to make this a memorable day.

A Big "Bienvenue" to Our Visitors from Martinique!

Our e-pals from Schoelcher, Martinique arrived Tuesday morning to a very warm welcome from our Middle Division students. Although weary from their trip, they were very happy and excited to finally meet their e-pals and host families in person.

Each morning they leave campus to explore all the things that St. Petersburg has to offer. So far, the group has visited several local attractions including Sawgrass Park, the St. Pete History Museum, and even the mall! In the afternoon, they eat lunch on campus and attend some classes.

We hope our guests enjoy their time at Shorecrest. When you see the group on campus don't forget to say "bonjour!"

The trees will provide shade for the working horses as well as a memorial area to remember the volunteer people and horses who have worked at the Farm. Each girl worked over 15 hours on this project including planning and execution.
