Results of last week's poll:Volunteer/community service work - What do you do?I help clean up campus...once you start doing it you feel like the best person in the world. This summer, when I'm old enough, I'm going to volunteer at All Children's Hospital. I cook, mow lawns, clean houses, build, walk dogs, etc. I make and sell decorated flip flops for charity at www.froufrouflipflops.com. What I have to do is school work because I'm in fourth grade...But I wish I could volunteer for helping the little kids because they are cute and fun to work with. How do I know? Because I patrol! I work at a petting zoo. Mainly recycle. I actually am very involved in volunteering for a non-profit organization. Volunteer work is very rewarding when you know that you have done good for your community. I plant lots of trees. They are good for the earth. I'm a Boy Scout and help out on a lot of things. Volunteer at the zoo! You know, maybe I should quit intending to do some community service someday, and actually do it. Conspicuous Success
I cannot imagine any parent, teacher or student at Shorecrest who would not want to be approached with a positive bias. In fact, I believe it is the wish of every parent that we, teachers and administrators, do everything we can to give students the benefit of the doubt and help them find ways to be successful. We can be equally sure that every teacher and parent would prefer to be approached in a positive manner. Recently, I met with a parent, who had gone through all the appropriate steps of meeting with teachers and the Division Head before coming to see me about an issue that was bothering her. I was impressed with two things about this lady. She had followed the important steps of seeing the teacher first. Then, she came to me with the intent of having a "win-win" experience for her child, the teacher and the school. She was demonstrating the positive bias that the I&P author was describing in his article. I think we were able to move toward a resolution of her problem. A week ago I spoke to the faculty about my hopes for them as we move into the "home stretch" of this school year. I acknowledged that most people are a little tired and have their sights set on the summer. Nonetheless, we have four very important weeks in front of us. I encouraged the faculty and staff to approach these weeks with the same energy that they have exhibited all year long. Now, more than anytime of the year, we need to be involved with and supportive of our students. My desire for all of us is to end the year with attitudes and actions that demonstrate our positive bias for all the people in our community. One person's success will have a positive influence on others. I am hopeful that our caring attitudes will create ripples of successful encounters and experiences throughout our community as we head into May and the celebrations of a year of growth and achievement at Shorecrest. |

Second graders traveled around the world this week as they performed for their classmates and parents. Dressed in their decorated flag t-shirts and carrying their passport bags, they visited all of the continents sharing their knowledge of other cultures. Learning songs, dances, and literature of other countries has enriched the second grade social studies curriculum.

Please be sure to visit the breezeways to see our displays of flags representing the heritage of our Shorecrest families.
The first graders took part in many fun and educational activities centering around Earth Day 2006. In addition to our weekly recycling efforts, the students also painted paper plate earths, completed computer projects that told how they could help save Mother Earth, and even got to "paint" sugar cookies with blue and green icing!

Math activities included discussing that the Earth is made up of 3/4 water and 1/4 land. The students demonstrated several different ways to show these fractions. So, we have one question to ask you... "Are you doing your part to save OUR Earth?"
On Wednesday, April 26, parents, teachers and other family members assisted students with completing their quilts.

They have been working on the quilts all about themselves over the last two months. All involved in this fun day were excited to see the finished products.

Students also got to participate in other quilting activities such as a fun computer activity, a special quilt snack and exploring with patterns.
Mrs. Jennings spent last Thursday through Saturday at the Florida Kindergarten Council Board Retreat. The Board voted on the accreditation statues for schools visited this year. Current legislative issues were also discussed. Mrs. Jennings is pleased that she has been asked to serve a second three-year term.
The summer reading lists are online for students entering grades one through four next fall.

Twenty Early Childhood students had lots of fun on the evening of April 7. The parents of these lucky children purchased a special evening from the Artrageous Affair that allowed their children to spend the evening with Mrs. McIvor, Ms. Uebel, and Mrs. Gootson.

The children thought playing on the playground, having a pizza dinner, and making their own sundaes was great fun. They also enjoyed stories (especially Ms. Uebel's spooky story!) and a sing-a-long. The most exciting part of the night was donning pajamas and spreading sleeping bags throughout the exploratorium.
Then it was lights outs and everyone settled down (somewhat!) to enjoy a movie before the parents returned to pick them up at 9:00.
On Tuesday students in grades 5 through 8 attended an ArtsPower National Touring Theatre production in the Janet Root Theatre. My Heart in a Suitcase is a one-act play based on the book by Anne L. Fox. Students entered the theatre quietly and respectfully after their teachers explained the plot of a young Jewish girl in Berlin who experienced the terrifying start of the Holocaust.

Eighth graders are studying World War II and the Holocaust, and on Friday many of them will visit the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C,. where the actual suitcase that Anne L. Fox carried with her on the Kindertransport is displayed.
Eighth graders who are on the Washington, D.C. trip have a unique opportunity to tour the White House.

Dr. and Mrs. Akshay Desai arranged for the special visit, and we look forward to hearing all the details. Our students are fortunate indeed.
There are several active Relay for Life teams in the Middle Division. Students have been working very hard on fundraisers - garage sales, bake sales, snowcones, and pizza have all generated donations for the American Cancer Society.

Also, Shorecrest's own Buccaneer, Dave Moore, will be signing autographs and posing for photos at the Sixth Grade Superstars tent. We look forward to May 5 and 6 as all teams become one big team for a worthy cause.
Spanish teacher Melanie Jarvis is taking her students to Estela's Mexican Restaurant on May 2 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Students are asked to turn in their orders to Mrs. Jarvis by May 1. This culinary and cultural experience will include authentic Mexican music and will be an excellent extension of classroom learning. Buena Suerte!
The Middle Division is very excited about the arrival of 21 exchange students from Martinique on May 8, especially their host families. ONE MORE HOST FAMILY IS NEEDED for a 14 year old boy. The host family does not need to speak French or have a student taking French. All students have insurance. Please contact Mrs. O'Horo if you are interested in ten days of sharing with a student from another culture. A parent meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. in R-9 for all host families.
For students entering grades five through eight next fall, the Middle Division Summer Reading List is now online.
DKF Design, LLC provides its customers with affordable, high quality cabinetry and furniture, backed by our unrelenting commitment to their total satisfaction. |

• Mrs. Whitecage and Mrs. Owen's first graders, who visited the eighth grade oceanography lab last Friday to participate in a squid observation and drawing.

Each first grader buddied with an eighth grader to observe, as a scientist, and then draw what they saw. First graders will return to the Lower Division with pictures of squid and octopus to color.

Thank you, teachers, for teaming together and coordinating this educational exchange.
• Freshman Alex N., junior Shelby H. and sophomore Anthony H., whose plays were named "Highly Commended" in The Gorilla Theatre's Young Playwright's Project. Shelby H. and Alex N. were also semi-finalists in the Blank Theatre.
• Juniors Sonya N. and David H., who competed in the Florida Suncoast Opera Guild's 36th annual high school vocal competition. Sonya was awarded fourth place, and David came in sixth place.

Our Boys Varsity Tennis team won the District Tennis Tournament last week at the Royal Racquet Club in Clearwater.

Congratulations to Brett A., Michael K., Alex S., Matt S., and Andrew S. The team played on Friday, April 21 at the Racquet Club in the Regionals against Tampa Prep and lost. We are proud of all of our tennis players and Coach East, Coach Every, and Coach Hodgson. Way to go!
The Varsity Baseball team is the #1 seed in the District Tournament being held at Northside Christian. The Chargers will play Keswick Christian, the #5 seed, on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. If they win, they will play for the District Championship on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Good Luck to the team and coaches!

The Chargers played P. K. Yonge from Gaineville on Saturday, April 22 and lost 5-0. Robby T. had an extra base hit to lead the team in hitting. Jeff R., Clay B., and Nick M. all had hits for the Chargers. The Chargers ended their regular season with 20 wins and 5 losses. It was Senior Day and Anthony K. and Pat M. were honored after the game.

The Middle Division Baseball team's four game winning streak was ended in the final game of the season with a 10-0 loss to St. Pete Christian. It concluded a season of nine wins, five losses and a tie. Throughout the season, the offense was powered by Kevin K., whose .471 batting average and .591 on-base percentage fueled an offense that suffered only one shutout all season.
Among the ball players the Varsity can look forward to having on the 2007 team are Tyler S. and Bobby T., who posted .375 and .300 batting averages, respectively. Rounding out the list of the top seven hitters are Marc B. (.300), Luke N. (.250), Mike M. (.231), and Paul M. (.227).
The pitching staff, which consisted of three sixth graders, three seventh graders, and two eighth graders, was anchored by Kevin K. who had a role in most of the nine victories. Congratulations to the team and coaches on a great season!
Boys in eighth through eleventh grades who are interested in playing football will begin Spring football practice on Monday, May 1. There will be three weeks of practice, culminating in a Spring Game against Trinity Christian Academy from Deltona. The game will be played on Saturday night, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. on Haskell Field.
Please turn in any uniforms that you may have at home to the Athletic office. Uniforms are expensive and you will be charged a replacement fee if they are not turned in by May 12! Thanks for your cooperation.

After a request from Interact for help with prizes for the hockey tournament winners, some students and businesses really jumped in! Since every donation had to be in groups of six (the number of students on each team), this was a sizable request.

Pat M. gave six Devil Rays tickets, Nashly B. purchased Blockbuster gift cards, Will R. turned in some ice cream certificates that he had, and Tayllor S. bought six $15 Baywalk movie passes to add to the winnings! Chick-fil-A Marketing Director Mandy Wise graciously offered twelve lunch combos! Winners of the tournament will be able to select their prizes according to where they finish in the standings.
Prom Prom Prom On Friday evening, May 12, the Prom will be held at the Don CeSar Hotel in the King Charles Ballroom. The Prom Committee could use your help to set up that afternoon (roughly 1:00). If interested, please contact Mr. Heller at rheller@shorecrest.org.
Last week we finished The Canterbury Papers and will start the novel All Roads Lead to Murder, a murder mystery set in the ancient city of Ephesus at the beginning of the Roman Empire. Several of our members have either been to this site in Turkey or will be seeing it for the first time this summer.
We hope to have a few meetings before the end of the year. Our next meeting will be May 15. Please join us in H4 during lunch if interested.
