Middle DivisionPat Craven DayFriday, April 7, was officially declared "Pat Craven Day" as the Middle Division students and parents honored her on the occasion of her retirement in June. Lauren D. and Angi C. began the morning meeting imitating Mrs. Craven during the announcements.
They gave her a tiara to wear for the day as she was crowned queen for the day. The day ended with an assembly in the Janet Root Theatre where the gift of "Time in a Bottle" was performed by guitarists Iman L. and Charlie D. and sung by the seventh and eighth grade chorus. We love you, Mrs. Craven! An Open Invitation! All Middle Division students who are not on a Relay for Life Team have an opportunity to join the Middle Division Hippies. The name comes from the fundraiser that this groups is doing: tie dye t-shirts. Members o On the evening of May 5, the Hippies will be on-site, making and selling more t-shirts. Students not accompanied by parents will have to be picked up at 10 p.m. rather than spending the night, but there is no limit to the number of students who can attend the evening's events. We hope many students will take advantage of this chance to be a part of a wonderful Shorecrest happening. King TutSixth graders had a visit to Ancient Egypt on Tuesday, when they visited the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art to view the King Tut Exhibit. Many parents were able to join the group, and returning visitors felt that the long bus trip was well worth the ride. Sixth graders study ancient Egypt as part of the Social Studies curriculum, so they were well prepared for the field trip. Thank you to those who made this event possible. DayspringsThe fourth quarter Lifeskills group traveled to Daysprings on Wednesday for a day of team-building. Chaperoned by Guidance Counselor Ashley Lippincott and Curriculum Dean Jean Carnes, students participated in a variety of outdoor adventures. They sang the songs they learned the whole way home and shared with their classmates in the Quad.
Seventh Grade SailorMichael B. and his father, J.A., are currently in Braassemermeer, Holland as Michael sails for the US National Team. Races begin on April 14, and we wish Michael the best of luck in his sailing competitions. They are staying in the picturesque town of Leiden, where we hear it's a bit chilly! Life Science NewsDr. Lisa Robbins was a guest speaker this week in seventh grade life science. Dr. Robbins works with the USGS and presented a program on how microbes are everywhere. She shared research from USGS regarding bacteria on our local beaches and how bacteria is carried by dust in our atmosphere.
Dr. Robbins showed slides and answered student questions. Students realized that what they learn in class is applicable in the real world of science. Summer Reading ListThe Middle Division Summer Reading List is online for students entering grades five through eight next fall. Many of these books will be available for purchase on campus at the Summer Reading Book Fair and Fanfare on April 17 and 18. Click for more information. Achievement TestsNext week the Middle Division will be administering the Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP4) from Educational Record Bureau, best known as the ERB's, to all students in grades five through eight. Testing takes place in the morning each day and is given by the homebase teachers Monday through Thursday, April 17-20, 2006. Please make every effort to have students at school on time during our testing, which should be completed by approximately 11:00 a.m. each of the four days. Parents can help with the testing by encouraging their children to get a good night's sleep, to eat a breakfast that contains some protein, and by talking with them about doing their personal best by reading the questions carefully, working at a steady pace and maintaining their focus and concentration while taking the subtests. Students in grades five through seven have been given a practice test this past week to reacquaint them with the test directions and with sample questions very similar to the actual test. If you have questions, please contact Sue Dattilo, Achievement Test Coordinator, at ext. 157. Upper DivisionProm News

Mr. Shelton's and Mrs. Church's kindergarten class takes a rest following a morning of planting to admire an annual favorite "Rainbow Garden!" Each spring, the entire kindergarten team of children and teachers plants beautiful flowers in the shape and colors of a rainbow for a science project.

Come by and visit the Rainbow Garden, just outside Mrs. Minke's east door in the Lower Division! The rainbow, not only a symbol of a welcome spring, is the centerpiece for the upcoming Kindergarten production "A Rainbow of Friends," scheduled for May 12, 10:00 a.m., in the Janet Root Theatre. Please mark your calendars!
This week in the Science Resource Center, third graders explored the basic functions and classification of living things during a squid dissection! Using a squid anatomy chart to help with identification, they investigated some of the squids' vital organs, including the gills, beak, heart, and the "pen and ink."

Afterwards, they discussed how they would classify a squid, pretending that it is a new creature to science and nobody knows what other living things it is "related to." The consensus was that the mantle - the big "head" of the squid containing all of its organs - tells us that it is a mollusk, and that the ink sack and movement of the squid tell us that it is a cephalopod. Captain Nemo could learn a lot from our third graders!

Mrs. Jennings left early Sunday morning to drive to Jacksonville to co-chair a Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Florida Council of Independent Schools and Florida Kindergarten Council visit at Riverside Presbyterian Day School.
The team spent Monday and Tuesday reviewing the school's self study and strategic plan and meeting with the various constituencies of their community. Dawn Weinman provided the team with the technical expertise needed as well as reviewing the school's curriculum and technology program. These visits are a wonderful opportunity to support other schools in their mission and an important commitment to independent education in Florida.

Friday is always an exciting day in Early Childhood as it is the day when the classes mix, and the children freely move from room to room engaging in a wide variety of exploratory activities. Last Friday was extra special as the Alpha and Junior Kindergarten classes had a chance to engage in the exploring process together when Mrs. Moyle's class and Mrs. Samuel's class switched buildings. The "official residents" of the buildings served as guides for the visitors, and it was gratifying to see the positive interaction between the two age groups.

The children had a great time, but teachers enjoyed it too as it gave them an opportunity to visit with their former or prospective students. This visiting process will continue for the next two weeks until each Alpha and JK class has a chance to visit the other building.
During April and May, the kindergarten classes are sharing their growing reading skills with the Early Childhood students. The younger children are enjoying the stories these "big kids" are reading to them while visiting each other's classrooms for "Buddy Reading."

Multi age level experiences are always valuable and fun, and it's also a comfortable way for the students to visit their future classrooms and possible teachers. It's really exciting, too, for the JK teachers to see how last year's students have grown!
The Alpha Classes visited Sunken Gardens this week. Having the chance to view its wonders with Mr. Doug (Doug Scull of Hands on Planet Earth) made the experience unique and valuable. The children had a wonderful time with Mr. Doug, who taught them so much about the environment.

Of course, all the unusual creatures he brought with him lent extra excitement to the experience. When else would the children have a chance to hold a giant millipede, giant hissing Madagascan cockroaches, or a giant lemon python!?!
The Junior Kindergartners enjoyed a trip to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary to extend their study of birds. The sanctuary serves as a rescue facility as well as provides a home for birds that cannot be rehabilitated into the wild. The children were able to closely view a wide variety of birds including owls, hawks, eagles, a variety of water fowl, and lots of pelicans!

As always, Jimmy the talking crow was a hit with the children. The tour guides who provided lots of information and answers to the children's questions, were impressed by our students' previous knowledge. One more highlight for the children was the chance to enjoy a bit of time on the beach.
Don't miss the opportunity to hear one of Shorecrest's favorite speakers on Wednesday, April 19 at 9:00 a.m. Dr. Hamilton, who in the past has offered Active Parenting Classes on campus, will be talking about brain development and the early childhood years. You are invited to bring friends from outside the Shorecrest community. Tours of Kindergarten and Early Childhood will be offered after the seminar.
We hope to see you on Thursday at 1:00 in the gym for the ECC - Lower Division celebration of the performing arts. The Early Childhood visual arts will be on display in the instructional area of the library.

Guys and Dolls will be professionally recorded and produced in DVD format and available for purchase through www.Stefio.TV .
