Oldie Goldie Event

Spring is just around the corner and with it comes an opportunity for spring cleaning. If your bookshelves are spilling over, take advantage of the upcoming Oldie Goldie Book Event to tidy them up. Here's how it works. Beginning March 6, children in EC through sixth grade can bring in books they no longer want and place them in the boxes outside their classroom doors.

On March 9 in the Middle Division and March 10 in the Lower Division, breezeways will be full of excitement and chatter as the students, along with their teachers, take advantage of the great bargains. Books will be priced between ten cents and one dollar! Imagine the children's delight at taking home a bag of books for under two dollars.

The Shorecrest Jazz Band entertained the Upper Division at the Third Annual Barbecue and Concert on March 1.

Upper Division Hosts Outdoor Concert and Barbecue

The Upper Division hosted the Third Annual Outdoor Barbecue and Concert on Wednesday, March 1 during an extended lunch. The Upper Division students, faculty and staff enjoyed a sunny spring day while eating Fred Fleming's delicious barbecue chicken and listening to the distinctive music provided by many of our Upper Division music students.

concert

Shorecrest's Jazz Band, comprised of Chris H., Keith J., Ryan M., William R., Alex V. and Jonathan V. (Middle Division), with Mr. Tom Glaister featured on drums, provided a variety of selections, including the Bob Dylan hit, "Like a Rolling Stone." The lively music inspired the student body to sing along with the performers and needless to say, no one wanted to return to class.

Sincere thanks to Maestros Lee Ahlin and Tom Glaister for their time and efforts toward this production, Dean Sessions and our Student Council members for their organization and assistance with the barbecue, to Teri Andres for getting everything done, and to the faculty for their patience and flexibility.

Tuskegee Airman

Shorecrest was very proud to welcome Dr. Yenwith Whitney, one of the original Tuskegee airmen, to campus on Thursday, March 2.

Accompanied by his wife Lori, Dr. Whitney drove up from Sarasota to address the Upper Division and the eighth grade in the Janet Root Theatre. Dr. Whitney recounted the early years of his life, growing up in the Bronx without having to deal with very much overt racism in his own life yet recognizing that the accomplishments of most black Americans were ignored by mainstream America.

Airman

He spoke of a study done by the military in the 1920s which "proved" the inferiority of blacks thus justifying the use of black soldiers only as drivers, cooks, and menial workers. Training African-American pilots was originally undertaken as an "experiment," and one which not everyone wanted to see succeed. But like the other Tuskegee airmen, Dr. Whitney persevered, proving the naysayers wrong.

He earned his wings in June of 1944 and served in the European theatre of war where he flew 34 combat missions before the end of the War the following year. The "Red Tails," so-called for the distinctive painting of their planes, had one of the most impressive records of any fighter group in the War, but that wasn't the end of their story. The courage and accomplishments of the Tuskegee airmen in combat contributed to the integration of the armed services as of 1948 and to the growth of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

And the legacy continues: just days ago, they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor the US Congress can bestow on individuals or organizations for outstanding acts of service, bravery, and sacrifice to our nation. We are honored to have had the opportunity to hear Dr. Whitney's story.

Habitat for Humanity

Last weekend Jill Bevan, April James and several members of the Junior Exchange Club did some finishing work on a Habitat for Humanity house. Sam S., Miles C. and Will R. put up shutters outside the house while Jillian G., Kelly M. and Katie S. tiled the kitchen. Chloe M. worked a table saw cutting tile for the kitchen.

habitat

David H. and Patrick M. also pitched in for the day. All in all it was a very productive day and the Habitat Supervisor gave the students an "A" rating for a job well done.

Summer Study Abroad in Seville, Spain!

A study abroad program was offered to all Upper Division Spanish students during the first quarter of this school year.

Spain

Although nine Shorecrest students participated in this same successful trip to Spain last summer [larger photo], the response this year was minimal. Señora Powers is offering the trip one last time this year in case anyone's plans have changed and parents want their student to have the opportunity to travel abroad this summer. The absolute last deadline for signing up for this study abroad trip is March 15. For more information, please contact Cary Powers at extension 116.

Call for Literary Magazine Submissions

The organizers of Tides, the Shorecrest literary magazine, are collecting material for this year's edition. If you have poetry, short stories, essay's, pictures, etc. you would like to submit, please give them to Dr. Littlefield, Andrew N., Ryan M. or Alex V. ASAP.

Clothing Drive

The clothing drive to gather female items for the girls of Brookwood Florida is complete, and the goods are on their way!

Interact, Key Club, and Latin Club joined together to provide clothes, shoes, purses, and such for the troubled adolescent girls of Brookwood. The mission statement of this organization states that Brookwood Florida is dedicated to providing these young women with an alternative living environment and therapeutic program encompassing education, job skills, independent living training and counseling to help prepare these teens for the future.

Anyone interested in becoming more involved with this great organization should contact Pam at 822-4789. A big thank you to all the students who donated to this great cause!

Odes of Horace

Jan RobisonJan Robison, the Upper Division Latin teacher, was invited to present a professional paper at the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT). This group's annual meeting was held this year on February 18, in Orlando at the Doubletree Conference center.

Mrs. Robison's topic was Images of Wine in the Odes of Horace. Roman wine varieties numbered 157. Horace mentions seven distinct types including peppered wine, rose wine, violet wine, even pitch flavored wine.

The session was well received. Patrons asked questions concerning the source materials, and this began a lively discussion of primary and secondary sources as well as current research in ancient wine types.

It is always an honor to present a paper to a conference of one's peers, and Mrs. Robison used the opportunity to bring a revered Roman poet back to life.

Middle Division

Mock Trial

This week Mrs. Brill's eighth grade English students participated in the Romeo and Juliet Mock Trail. Each class prepared a full complement of prosecution, defense, witnesses, journalists, and evidence.

Class of 2012 is Blue!

The sixth grade Leadership Class has created a class t-shirt that reflects their high school class color. Purchase slips are due March 10, which will enable sixth graders to wear their special shirts every Friday during fourth quarter.

Fish Hats for Relay for Life

fish hats

These teachers are part of the Middle Division supporters for Relay for Life, an American Cancer Foundation fundraiser, that will be held at Shorecrest on May 5 and 6. The Middle Division teachers' team is called "Gone Fishing."

The team was named in honor of Garrett Staples, a middle school student who battled cancer. The team is trying to raise money for cancer research by selling the fish hats for a donation of five dollars. In addition, a dress-down day for the Middle Division will be held on March 14. Only students with hats may dress down. This is a complete dress down - including flip flops.

Hats are $5 and are on sale through Friday, March 3. All proceeds go to The American Cancer Society Relay for Life on May 5 and 6.

We hope to see a school of fish hats on the 14th that symbolizes our division's 100% participation in the fight against cancer.

Breakfast Review

Some eighth grade oceanography students have been arriving "extra" early on campus to prepare for their oceanography test that day. At 7:00 a.m. Miss D'Ambrosio has a breakfast review session where students can ask any last minute questions while munching on breakfast snacks.

It's become quite popular to eat and review as 40 to 60 students attend the morning help session. Thank you, Miss D'Ambrosio!

101 Dalmatians Collects and Donates over 101 Bags of Dog Food

Thanks to some very generous and canine loving fifth and sixth grade parents, family and friends, the SPCA received over 101 bags or cans of dog and cat food.

Our fifth and sixth grade drama and music production this year was 101 Dalmatians! If you missed it, you really missed out. The cast and back stage technicians for both grades did an outstanding job.

dogfood

And to top it off, they hosted a dog and cat food drive. Instead of charging admission for their 101 Dalmatians performances on Feb 14-15, our "dog catchers" were accepting bags and cans of food from all the folks who wanted to donate. It was a success, with many folks donating two or three cans or bags of pet food! The SPCA was very grateful and asked that we pass on their 101 thanks! What a great idea to turn a drama/music production into a community service project, too.

Volunteers Needed

The Middle Division students will be having a SPA sponsored lunch on Haskell Field on March 15, the day before Spring Break. We need at least five volunteers to help serve and facilitate from 11:00-1:00 p.m. If you would like to help, let us know.

Also, Teacher Appreciation is right after Spring Break, and we will need to get volunteers for the classrooms as well as have someone help out with the Teacher Grams. see a date that will work for you, let us know. The teachers really appreciate the sentiments in the Teacher Gram.

Can you believe it? Two opportunities to be on campus - don't miss out! Thanks! Suzi, Karen and Melinda

Native American Program and Media Blender Stacks

Friday dawned with a beautifully poignant Native American program performed by our fourth grade students. [large photo] [photo pages]

Native American

Using the vast knowledge they have accumulated so far this year in their integrated studies, they told the stories of the Native American culture through song, dance, musical instruments, and the powerful tradition of storytelling. Their integrated studies in technology, social studies, literature, music, and art brought their learning alive with meaning and culminated in the heartfelt singing of Colors of the Wind.

After the program, families enjoyed viewing the Media Blender stacks the students created about their tribes. The program underscored the values we teach at Shorecrest and our concern and desire to care for our fragile planet.

Accreditation Visiting Team

Mrs. Jennings will be co-chairing a Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Florida Council of Independent Schools, and the Florida Kindergarten Council accreditation team visit to Lake Highland Prep in Orlando Sunday through Tuesday. This collaborative process supports schools as they create a continuous self-improvement plan. Anna Baralt, Instructional Technologist, will participate on this team, as well.

Bay Area Association of Schools

Our faculty have been involved in professional development opportunities with our Bay area schools this past week. Our Spanish teachers, Sandra Leon-Cone and Teresa Starr, attended a meeting at Carrollwood Day School where they exchanged ideas towards the goal of getting children to speak more Spanish. Contacts and resources were shared and exchanged. Music teacher Valerie Diaz Leroy attended a BAAIS meeting at Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa.

And, finally, Shorecrest second grade teachers hosted a meeting Wednesday of over twenty educators from the following schools: St. Stephen's, St. John's Episcopal, Pinellas County Jewish Day School, Admiral Farragut, Wellington, St. Paul's, Canterbury, Academy of the Holy Names, Hillel, St. Mary's, and Berkeley.

Third Grade Planet Report

The third grade has been studying space and more specifically, the solar system, in science. The unit culminated with a planet report. Each student was assigned one of the other eight planets in the solar system. They were assigned a set of questions to research each week and wrote the report in class. As a final part of the project, the students made a model of their planet.

planet

They were given free reign to be as creative as possible, and the supplies used for the models ranged from Styrofoam and clay to paper maché. One was even edible. The students then utilized their public speaking skills to give a brief presentation about their planet and model to the class. Here's to a job well done by our young astronomers!

Strategic Plan Workshop Generates Energy for the Present and Future for Shorecrest

Mr. MurphyOver the past weekend, Susan Stone guided 64 members of the Shorecrest community through an extremely productive and stimulating strategic plan process. The workshop began on Thursday evening with an opportunity for participants to clarify data from the Listening Sessions conducted by Mrs. Stone in January, review the results of the community-wide assessment of the school, and examine other data from local and national organizations.

On Friday, Tech Data hosted the workshop in its fabulous meeting/training facility. Initially, each participant was given time to consider the strategic issues related to six general topics: Program, Students, Faculty/Staff, Facilities, Communications, and Finance and Development. The personal reflection time was followed by discussions in one of six breakout groups. By the end of the day, participants had constructed lists of key elements for each of the six areas. The six breakout groups came together to share their thoughts on each of the six strategic areas.

On Saturday, the participants were divided into six groups but were asked to focus on only one of the six strategic elements. By noon each group had created a goal, rationale for the goal, and objectives to achieve each goal. These elements were shared with the full group and then critiqued after lunch. Mrs. Stone then asked participants to prioritize the elements of the reports. A consensus regarding the short-range and long-range plans for Shorecrest became obvious.

Strategic Vision

In the next week a draft of the plan will be written and sent to the participants. Upon their approval, the plan will be presented to the faculty, and I will deliver the major outline to the parents and students. The final draft is due to the Board of Trustees in early April. Upon their approval, the full plan will be presented to the Shorecrest community.

In May, Mrs. Stone will return to St. Petersburg to work with the Administrative Team to create the operational plan. This plan will clarify responsibility for implementation, timelines, projected costs, and methods for ongoing review. Our intention is to have this plan to the Board of Trustees by mid-May and then to the full community.

Attached is a list of the members of the community who participated in the workshop. Chairman of the Board Fred Razook pointed out that just in this one weekend over 900 work hours were dedicated to this planning process. He echoed the voices of other participants stating that the planning weekend was remarkably stimulating and efficient. We all feel that Shorecrest is well positioned for a very exciting future.

Shorecrest community members are invited to contact me or any of the participants to learn more about the weekend. There is no question that our ambitious plan will not be achieved without the enthusiastic involvement of the entire Shorecrest community.

There was a universal admiration for Mrs. Stone's ability to bring 64 people representing all constituencies of our community to the point where we are ready for the strategic plan to be written. As much as I would have liked to have had more community members at the workshop, I respect the challenge Mrs. Stone had working with 64 people. In the coming months, teachers, staff, students, alumni and parents will have many opportunities to help in the development of plans and then the implementation process.

I look forward to sharing the various drafts and visions with our community. I thank all of you who have already participated in Listening Groups, the survey and the planning workshop. We have a great school and wonderful community, and I have all the confidence in the world that we are going to become even better.

Cheers!

Mike Murphy

Holocaust Museum Speakers

On Sunday, February 26, there was a special program at the Janet Root Theatre in conjunction with the Florida Holocaust Museum. David Gewirtzman, a Holocaust survivor, and Jacqueline Murekatete, a child survivor of the Rwandan genocide, shared their heartwrenching stories and explained how their experiences brought them together with a unified goal of talking about tolerance.

holocaust

The presentation was powerful and thought provoking. Ms. Murekatete was nine years old when the Rwandan genocide took place. She lost both of her parents, grandmother, all six siblings and most of her aunts, uncles and cousins. Mr. Gerwirtzman was a child in Poland during the Holocaust. He survived by being burrowed for nearly two years with family members under a pigsty. Although their stories detailed horrific events, their optimistic attitudes offered a feeling of hope for future generations.

Early Childhood

A Visit From the SPCA

Two special visitors came to the Junior Kindergarten assembly last week. Miss Linda from the SPCA came with her dog, Sassy, to pick up and thank us for the pet food donations that were collected in conjunction with our pet show.

She showed a short video of pets at the SPCA and talked about what the SPCA does. Miss Linda also invited the children to visit the SPCA with their parents.

Over, Under, and Around

The Alpha students had a great time navigating an indoor obstacle course during exploring last week. An obstacle course is a fun way to develop a greater understanding of directional concepts as well as to enhance gross motor development. Of course, it's always more fun to do these things with a friend, so the children carried stuffed "pets" as they walked, crawled and jumped over, around, and through a variety of obstacles.

Particularly Good Pretzels

Cooking is always great fun for children and is also a wonderful learning experience. It incorporates reading (the recipe), math (measuring), following directions, and science.

On a recent Friday, the Junior Kindergartners had the opportunity to make their own pretzels from scratch. Each measured and mixed his own ingredients, kneaded the dough, and formed the pretzel. The hardest part was waiting for it to bake but since they pronounced these the best pretzels they'd ever eaten, it must have been worth the wait!

All About Dinosaurs

The Alpha children are learning all about dinosaurs. They have many different activities in which to engage adding dinosaur models to more familiar building and manipulative materials.

dinosaur puzzle

Making scenes by gluing dinosaur shapes onto paper and adding crayon scenery and dictation involves fine motor skills and language development as well as creativity. Dinosaur puzzles are always a favorite center to visit, too!
