Nautical Poker Run. Without a doubt the Nautical Poker Run was one of the best sign-up events offered at last year's Big Event. We know that many of you are planning on being a part of this sign-up event this year. Please note that the date has been confirmed for Saturday, May 13. Clear you calendar now and get your pen ready to sign-up for this great day.
Artrageous Artists' Gallery
We are excited this year to have added a new element to the Big Event 2006…the artists' gallery. There are twelve different artists from Mexico and throughout the United States, and each artist will have his or her pieces of displayed the night of the Big Event for purchase.
The price of each work of art will not be an auction value, but the value that the artist has designated prior to the event. The artists have graciously agreed to donate forty percent of the price of pieces that sell to Shorecrest, to help us continue our mission of being a "school of the arts."
You can see the artists, read their bios and look at their incredible works of art on our auction site http://shorecrest.maestroweb.com., "Artrageous Artists" link under the Artists category.
A very special thank you goes out to Robin Roth-Murphy for making the "first ever" artists component such a vital part of this year's Artrageous Affair.
New Parent Breakfast
Many thanks to Susie Wehrmann for creating a scrumptious feast for our New Parent Breakfast last week.

Over fifty Shorecrest new parents and Parent Ambassadors enjoyed food and fellowship in the Student Activity Center. It was good to hear how well our newest Shorecrest students are doing!
First Annual Heritage Society Reception
Thursday, February 9, marked the first of an annual event which recognizes the members of Shorecrest's Heritage Society. The reception was held at the home of Headmaster Mike Murphy and his wife Robin. View a large photo online.
The Heritage Society recognizes those who have made a commitment to preserving Shorecrest's financial future by means of an immediate or future gift to the Endowment Fund. Endowment is crucial to the future of Shorecrest by the sustainable funding it affords to the school, allowing us to attract and retain the highest caliber of teachers, the greatest diversity of students, and the ability to maintain our excellent facilities - while keeping tuition costs reasonable.
For more information regarding Shorecrest's Endowment Fund, please contact Robb Resler, Director of Advancement.
Oldie Goldie Event
Spring is just around the corner and with it comes an opportunity for spring cleaning. If your bookshelves are spilling over, take advantage of the upcoming Oldie Goldie Book Event to tidy them up. Here's how it works. Beginning March 6, children in EC through sixth grade can bring in books they no longer want and place them in the boxes outside their classroom doors.
On March 9 in the Middle Division and March 10 in the Lower Division, breezeways will be full of excitement and chatter as the students, along with their teachers, take advantage of the great bargains. Books will be priced between ten cents and one dollar! Imagine the children's delight at taking home a bag of books for under two dollars.

The frost on the grass proved Tuesday was the coldest morning of the winter!
Mozart and Schumann Marathon
The St. Petersburg Music Teachers Association and St. Petersburg College
will sponsor a Ten Hour Music Marathon of solo and ensemble music by Mozart and Schumann on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Music Center of St. Petersburg College, Gibbs Campus, 6605 Fifth Avenue North.

Lower Division
Fourth Grade Book Club
Who says reading can't be fun? Several fourth grade students have been hanging out in Ms. Tucker's classroom on Monday afternoons taking part in a new Lower Division book club.

Munching on snacks, they spend an hour or so reading and discussing three novels by Madeleine L'Engle. L'Engle is best known for her Newbery Award winning novel A Wrinkle In Time, but she has also written over thirty other books for young people!
Violin Performance in Kindergarten
Kindergartner Frank W. recently gave his classmates a treat during sharing time. He brought his violin to school and performed pieces he had been studying at home.

Each time he played, he explained the music to his friends, and he ended each piece with a bow of thanks for the applause. Frank has been studying since he was four years old.
Valentine's Day
Kindergarten students open their Valentine's Day treasures.

Early Childhood
Missing Umbrellas
By the end of our wonderful but wet Grandparents Day, all of the large Shorecrest umbrellas that belong to the Early Childhood Center were missing. If you "borrowed" one, please return it so we can keep our students dry on rainy days!
Learning Through Music
Learning can happen in so many ways and doesn't have to be work at all! Music is a great conduit for integrated learning and one simple song can teach so much.
"There is a shape that means love and heart is its name, oh.
H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T,
And heart is its name, oh."
This song, sung to the tune of BINGO, was taught to the EC students before Valentine's Day. When they sang it, they repeated it five times, each time replacing one more letter with a clap.

Singing the song in this manner helped the students review shape and letter recognition, practice rhythmic patterns and sequencing, enhance memory, and even learn to spell, as well as reinforcing the meaning of the holiday.
Edible Friendship Valentines
The Alpha children created very special edible valentines in exploring last week. They made pancakes, choosing white or pink batter and helping the adults flip them in the pan. When their pancake was cooked, each child used a heart-shaped cookie cutter to create two heart images, then found a friend to share with, creating pink hearts within white frames and vice versa.

The best part, of course, was eating these delicious friendship valentines!
Why Is Your Family Special?
This idea provoked a lot of thought from Mrs. Jotch's JK students. They put lots of effort into illustrating and dictating their answers to this question during center time this week.

Helping the SPCA
In conjunction with their Pet Show, the Junior Kindergarten classes are collecting Iams and Science Diet dog and cat food for the SPCA. If you would like to make donations, please drop them off at the Early Childhood Center.
Any members of the Shorecrest community who would like to watch the parade and show are invited to join us on Thursday morning at 8:20 on the Reilly Softball Field.
EC Knows How to Party
The Early Childhood Valentine's Day parties were great fun! The children enjoyed a variety of games, crafts, and making strawberry shortcake for dessert. Eye-hand coordination and gross motor skills were tested by the ring and bean bag toss games.

In JK, Valentine wands and bookmarks were fun to make and great keepsakes. The Alpha children had fun painting flower pots to fill with chocolate kisses and a seed packet on a stick, and making wands and door knob signs. Many, many thanks to the parents who coordinated, prepared materials and came to help!
Upper Division
Science Club Swims with Manatees
Early on Monday morning, David Hyink and Erich Schneider took 14 Science Club students to the Homosassa River to swim with manatees. After arriving at "Captain Mike's" in Homosassa, they were quickly issued wet suits and snorkel gear and shown a film discussing the natural history of the West Indian Manatee.
After being instructed on proper behavior around the large mammals, they were taken by boat to a manatee sanctuary. The fact that Monday was one of the coldest days of the year worked to the advantage of the students as the manatees all gathered in the warmer 72 degree springs near the sanctuary entrance. Once we had anchored, those manatees that felt sociable swam out from the sanctuary boundary to seek the attention of the students. Students were able to observe some feeding behavior as well as interactions between calves and mother manatees.

Mr. Hyink, who has taken many groups in the past, said it can be "hit or miss" as to whether you encounter any manatees. "Some years are better than others depending on conditions on a particular day. This was one of the best years we've had." Students enjoyed the trip, and Mr. Schneider, a recent transplant from the North, was heard to say, "You don't see a lot of these in Lake Michigan!"
History Book Club
On Monday the Clio Club Book Club had its inaugural meeting to discuss the novel The Canterbury Papers. There were ten people in attendance including Mrs. Specht and Mrs. Lakhani.

Our next meeting is March 13, so if you'd like to join, read up to page 150.
Students Under Pressure
This week's conceptual physics unit deals with liquids. We all know that as you dive into water, you feel the liquid exerting pressure on you; especially on your tympanic membrane (eardrum).
I wanted to have the students experience this increase in pressure with the increase of depth. Unfortunately, scuba diving in the Caribbean was not an option. Therefore, I decided to have the students slowly lower themselves into a large trash can full of water! Not to worry, I had them step into a large garbage bag first and slowly lower their leg into the trash can full of water.

As they increased their depth, the air in the bag was forced out by the increasing pressure exerted by the water. The kids had a lot of interesting comments as they descended and tried to explain what they were feeling. Physics is phun! See and Learn More.
"The French Connection"
On Wednesday, February 16, Michaelle Confident spent time with the Upper Division students enrolled in the course, "The French Speaking World," taught by Jackie Carnes. Madame Confident teaches French and Spanish in the fifth and sixth grades. She grew up in Haiti and still has family there.
Madame Confident and her husband are still very much a part of the life on the French-speaking island, and Madame Carnes' students are fortunate to have her bring their studies to life. They were afforded a realistic view of the middle class people of Haiti, the current elections, and background information on the leading candidate, Monsieur Preval.
Spanish Club
Valentine's Dance
The Eighth Annual Valentine's Dance, sponsored by the Upper Division Spanish Club, was held this past Saturday at the St. Petersburg Museum of History from 8 to 12 p.m. The dance was attended by 179 Upper Division students, a record attendance! DJ Fresh was the DJ and the senior band UJB, accompanied by Dana B., also played a set. UJB members are Alex V., Will R., Ryan M. and Jonathan V.
Michael R. won the big raffle prize, a $50 gift certificate to Carrabas; Mrs. Robison won the $25 gift certificate to Muvico; Mrs. Huck won the $20 gift certificate to Starbucks; and Mr. Heller won this year's Valentine's boxers. The girls soccer team was congratulated with a cake and cheers as they arrived at the dance directly from Ft. Lauderdale.

At 10:30, Mr. Manella crowned the King and Queen of Hearts and their court: King and Queen - Dana B. and Brett A.; Juniors - Derek O. and Jackie K.; Sophomores - Chris K. and Chelsea S.; and Freshmen - Joe A. and Samantha S. These students were chosen by their peers as people who are always willing to help another person without seeking the spotlight, people who are always there for their fellow students. It is quite an honor for each one of them. Congratulations to the entire court!

Many thanks to the Spanish Club Dance Committee and especially the committee chairmen: Brianna K., Leslie E., Mindy S., Blair D., Kim L. and JJ R. Each year the money raised at the dance is donated to the Children's Dream Fund to make the dream of a child with a life threatening illness come true. The child this year is Analiz, who has leukemia. Her wish is to have her bedroom decorated in a Dora the Explorer theme. With the funds raised at the dance ($852) plus funds from the Spanish Club's other events, Analiz is sure to have a bedroom de sus sueños.
Carnations and Singing Telegrams
The Upper Division Spanish Club again sold carnations for Valentine's Day. Students bought flowers for friends, for those special amigos or for special teachers. In all, 770 carnations were sold and delivered with a personalized note attached to each one.

Kristen D., along with her co-chairs Edie B., Maria M. and Kim N., did a fantastic job of organizing this huge project! Also, the ladies came up with a new idea this year - delivering singing telegrams! 30 songs were purchased and delivered in style and with gusto by some of Shorecrest's most talented "cantantes." What a wonderful day! Plus, $488 was raised for the Children's Dream Fund!

Arts Beat
Student Surrealist Art
Shorecrest students recently submitted art work for judging to the Salvador Dali Museum's annual Student Surrealist Art Exhibition. With this year's theme, "Surrealism, Dreams and Fantasy," all Pinellas County schools were eligible to enter the district-wide competition which will open on February 24.
Shorecrest's Arts & Humanities Department is proud and honored to have had so many of our students' works chosen for display! They are as follows: Ian B. (painting), Alex F. (graphic design), Mark C. (graphic design), Myles C., Pat M. and Chrissy M. (digital film imaging), Tyler R. and Mike S. (digital film imaging) Ashley D., Kelly M. and Mark C. (digital film imaging), Stephanie G. (photography/mixed media), Vincent M. (photography), Valerie S. (sculpture), Jenna D. (sculpture), Michelle B. (sculpture), and Erik R. (sculpture). Congratulations to all!
Arts Center Awards
On Sunday, February 12, families gathered at the Arts Center to view the students pieces chosen for The Words and Images Display.

Third graders Raquel G., Tatum L., and Monica C. received certificates of recognition for their works being chosen from over 200 entries county wide. Mrs. Rowe, their art teacher, and Mrs. Jennings looked on with pride.
Representing the fifth grade were Mrs. Williams' students Sarah L., Kyle C., and Parker D., whose works were selected as well.
Progressive Dinner
Five Shorecrest couples enjoyed a lively evening hosted by Shorecrest administrators on Saturday, January 21. Alan and Kathi Almengual, Barbara and Gene Collins, Robert and Lorrie Heyman, Gerry and Valerie Rice, Rick Ivas and Mary Jo Carney purchased the evening at last year's Big Event.

The group was picked up by a limousine, driven to the home of Admissions Director Diana Craig and her husband Marshall for cocktails and appetizers, then delivered to the home of Headmaster Mike and Robin Murphy for dinner and dessert. The delicious meal was prepared and served by an enthusiastic team of Shorecrest administrators, and everyone involved agreed that they would love to do a repeat performance. This fun event will be available again at this year's Artrageous Affair!

101 Dalmatians
Congratulations to both the fifth and sixth grade casts of 101 Dalmatians. Under the direction of Mrs. Lillian Nelson and Mrs. Emily Culley, Middle Division students brought this exciting tale of adorable puppies to life.

Many parents volunteered to assist with costuming, sets and celebration. Students in grades 4-8 attended the two daytime performances, while
family and friends came each evening. Bravo for a wonderful event!
Griot

We bid farewell to our visitors from Argentina during the Middle Division presentation by Kwabena Dinizulu, a contemporary griot. We had such fun with our visitors and exchanged many ideas and experiences about Argentina and the USA. We hope to see them next year.

Valentine's Day Festivities
February 14 is celebrated in a variety of ways in the Middle Division. Students pre-sold roses to seventh and eighth graders, giving the profits to the Relay for Life project. Mrs. Williams received a singing Valentine gram, Mr. Davis received flowers in the color of his wedding, and Mrs. Culley accepted roses. Coach Hayford ordered an Upper Division carnation and verse to be delivered to Mrs. Hayford.
Middle Division students enjoyed Valentine treats throughout the day and everyone had a wonderful Valen--- time! Thank you to all the Middle Division cupids!

Excel-lent Math Adventure
Seventh grade pre-algebra students embarked on an Excel-lent math adventure in the classroom and in the computer lab during the past week. After learning necessary formulas, the seventh graders progressed from using Excel for basic calculations to problem solving.
Mrs. Black presented a series of electronic spreadsheets that allowed students to manipulate data for quarter grade averages, loan payments, and shopping sprees. She encouraged her students to ask "what if" questions and provided them with formulas that enabled them to make predictions and quickly solve problems with changing data. Students learned that playing "what if" with an electronic spreadsheet allowed them to forecast and then confirm the effect of a particular change.

As a concluding activity, students designed a problem and developed a spreadsheet that allowed them to solve it. Through hands-on activities, the seventh grade math students learned that electronic spreadsheets are powerful tools for problem solving.
