Scaling With Sugar Cubes

The Conceptual Physics students have been studying the solid state of matter. The concept of scaling is sometimes difficult to understand but not if learned through a hands-on experience. We discussed how models of cars or homes are built to scale and what that means.

physics

To determine what happens to area and volume as the dimensions of a model increase, the students explored scaling with sugar cubes. Physics Is Phun! To learn more visit Mrs. Peck's Solids Website.

Spanish Club Activities

The Upper Division Spanish Club has begun its busiest two weeks of the school year. The annual Valentines Dance is being held on February 11, from 8-12, at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. The attire for the evening is dressy casual (no jeans allowed!), and the dance is open for all Upper Division students. The cost is $14 per person and guests may be invited as long as they are registered in advance in the Upper Division office, where Mrs. McKay will be selling the dance tickets. Some students come with dates, but most students come with groups of friends.

carnationsIn addition to the dance activities, the Spanish Club also has its annual carnation sale in full force. Students may buy carnations for their favorite teacher, a good friend, or even someone they secretly admire! A special message of their choice is attached to each carnation and will be delivered during advisory on Valentine's Day, February 14. Each carnation costs one dollar and may be purchased every day from now through Feb 13 during break or lunch in the Quad.

And a special Valentine's Day event that is new this year - A Singing Telegram! Choose from ten different songs, and we'll send a singer to your Valentine's advisory to sing them a tune sure to make them swoon! The cost is just $5 while they last. We have to limit the number of songs sold, due to time constraints. These can be purchased during break or lunch as well as from Sra. Powers.

Two Students to Attend Interact Convention

Sophomores Michael R. and Michael W. are going to represent us at the National Interact Convention in March of this year that will be held in Clearwater.

Interact

Dick Schultz, representing St. Petersburg Sunrise Rotary Club, was present at our meeting to discuss the agenda of the upcoming convention and give other Interact members ideas for fund raising projects. Having T-shirts with the Interact Logo was one suggestion. Hosting a team for Relay for Life was also discussed and the club is rallying around captains, Bekka G., Chelsea S. and Michael R. Look for Shorecrest coolie cups on sale soon!

Middle Division

History Fair

This Friday, thirty-one Middle Division students competed at the Pinellas County History Fair, hosted this year by East Lake High School. The fair is but one step in a national competition held each year by the National History Day organization.

History Fair

The organization releases a different contest theme each year and students in sixth through twelfth grades are encouraged to research a historical topic of interest and present their findings in one of four categories - historical paper, exhibit, documentary or performance.

This year's theme is "Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events." All contestants placing first and second in their category are invited to participate in the Florida State History Fair May 4-6, 2006 in Tallahassee. Fair results will be published in next week's E-Bytes. Thanks, students, for representing Shorecrest.

DARE Graduation

The fifth grade students celebrated their DARE graduation in the Janet Root Theatre on Wednesday. Preston S. emceed the event and his classmates read winning essays saying "NO to Drugs." An essay was sung by the author, Lainey M., while Zack F. and Jerome J. rapped their lyrics. Officer Gilmore introduced "Knuckleheads," a rap group, for entertainment. Thank you to fifth grade parents for the reception following in the the Sher Center Breezeway.

DARE

Curriculum Fair

Parents from fourth through eighth grades are invited to the Middle Division on Thursday, February 9 from 9:00 a.m. until noon. This annual event gives parents an opportunity to visit classrooms in session. We encourage parents to visit classes that their students might have next year, as well as their current classes. We hope that our returning parents will enjoy this preview of their child's opportunities next year.

Latin IB - "It's All Greek To Them"!

It's all Greek to the members of the Latin IB eighth grade class, but it is all clearly understood. After becoming familiar with some Greek history and art forms in class, the students visited the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Petersburg on Tuesday, January 31. This has become a tradition at this level of the Latin curriculum.

The students met with a docent in the Greek Antiquities Gallery and saw artifacts from Greece and southern Italy, some of which date back almost 4,000 years. After the gallery visit, the group had lunch at Athenian Gardens Restaurant where the menu and wall decor expanded the theme of the day. The sixteen students were accompanied by their teacher, Linda Grau.

Mrs. Grau was fortunate to have the help of Headmaster Mike Murphy, and Alice Hathcoat and Carolyn Steinhauser, two very willing parents who make a difference.

Students' Work Exhibited at the Arts Center

Congratulations to third graders Raquel G., Tatum L., and Monica C., whose artwork was chosen for the Word and Images: Arts in Education Partnership exhibition, "The Class Menagerie," at the Arts Center.

artists

The exhibition will run from February 10 - March 26, with an opening reception on Sunday, February 12 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Arts Center's Family Day Activities. Mrs. Rowe is oh so proud of all her students.

Placemats for Hunger Banquet

For over 34 years the St. Petersburg Free Clinic has provided temporary assistance Hunger Projectfor those who require help with basic needs. Again this year our fourth grade students sent in artwork to be made into placemats for the annual Hunger Banquet.

Tach Molina, volunteer with the Free Clinic, presented our fourth grade students with copies of the placemats which were printed from their artwork [large photo]. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to better understand the mission of the clinic:

"The St. Petersburg Free Clinic is a caring organization helping to meet basic, unserved human needs through resources, volunteers, and advocacy."

Puzzle Madness

With the ruckus that was heard in the Breezeway during lunch on Wednesday, one would have thought a fourth grade student had won the lottery. It was actually something even bigger than that.

puzzle masters

Since returning from Winter Break, a group of fourth graders have been steadily working in 10 and 15-minute increments on a 20 x 30 inch, over 600 piece puzzle of the state of Florida. They worked on this puzzle during snacks; they begged for time with the puzzle after finishing lunches; and they placed pieces in moments when class work was done before the next task was assigned.

Very quickly, these students showed their diligence and teamwork as the "design" sections were completed, and they were left with only off-white pieces with nothing to distinguish where these should go. Understandably, when the last piece fit in its space during Wednesday's lunch, this group was ecstatic. And moments later, they were asking a teacher to find them a puzzle that would be more of a challenge... at least 1,000 pieces please!

Money, Money, Money

As first graders continue their investigation of money, they were recently treated to a visit to the Bank of St. Petersburg [ large photo ]. Bank employees arranged five stations, each highlighting an aspect of banking. Children rolled pennies, learned about the importance of having a bank account, viewed the cash and teller counters, and even traveled through the vault. Students left with a goodie bag, a smile on their face, and a more thorough understanding of the workings of a bank.

Citizen of the Month

Congratulations to our citizens of the month for December:

  • First Grade - Naomi M.
  • Second Grade - Tanner W.
  • Third Grade - Paul R.
  • Fourth Grade - Nikki L.

citizens

These students exemplify the life skills we teach and practice here at Shorecrest. Thank you, parents, for instilling these wonderful values in your children. You would be pleased to know that they are modeling what you taught them. Thank you for being partners with us in this most important endeavor.

Early Childhood

Pet Show Date Change

The date of the Junior Kindergarten Pet Show has been changed. It will be held on Thursday, February 23, rather than on the 24th as previously announced. This annual event is always a favorite, and spectators from any part of the Shorecrest Community are welcome to view the fun on February 23 at 8:20 a.m. on the Reilly Softball field.

The Junior Kindergarten classes will be sponsoring a community service project in conjunction with the pet show by collecting dog and cat food (Iams or Science Diet), dog biscuits, nylabones and cat snacks for the SPCA.

hammeringHammering Away

The Alpha classes concentrated on developing their hand-eye coordination during last week's exploring with a variety of hammering activities. Activities included hammering nails into logs and golf tees into styrofoam and using clay hammers with play dough.

They created a unique hanging for their exploratorium by stringing beads on wire, hammering nails into a board, and hanging the decorated wires from the nails. Even snack was a hammering event as the children put graham crackers into plastic bags and hammered them into crumbs which they then put into cups with pie filling and whipped cream!

Smile

The Junior Kindergartners have started what we hope will be a great trend that we call "Smile." After listening to the book One Smile by Cindy McKinley, a story about a little girl who started a series of wonderful events with one smile, the children decided to try out the theory behind the story. Each JK class decided on a smile project to share with an older grade to see how far they can spread happiness. This week, Mrs. Jotch's class visited Mrs. Kubicki's first grade class where they shared the story and spread joy by giving hugs to the first graders.

smiles

Mrs. Moyle's and Mrs. Lipan's classes will be visiting other classes soon to share the story and their own type of happiness. We'll report on those visits as they happen and wait anxiously to hear how "Smile" is passed on and on and on!

tasteHappy New Year, Again

Exploring in Junior Kindergarten last week was a Chinese New Year's celebration. During assembly, Mrs. Gootson read two related stories, Chinese New Year and Cleversticks, then off the children went to make Chinese lanterns, calligraphy good luck banners, and dragon puppets. The snack room featured the chance to try to eat rice and soy sauce, peas, and carrots with chopsticks. Extra special was the room Mrs. McIvor created where the children enjoyed music by dancing, playing instruments, and parading under a giant dragon.
