Artrageous Affair

Chili Cookoff

A "Kickin' Good Time" doesn't begin to describe how those in attendance described the Chili Cookoff 2006. And the winner…first place went to Stephen Manella, Upper Division Head, for the best chili. Second place, and a close one at that, went to Tony Pemble, Director of Finance. "No one went home hungry," says Lisa Wikholm, "but most of all we are so pleased at the awareness this exciting event created for the Big Event: Artrageous Affair."

Chili Cookoff

Special thanks to all of our Shorecrest faculty and staff who pulled out their best recipes for some amazing chili. Thank you also to Luis and Dawn Bryan who helped to make this event truly great through their incredible help. And of course thank you to our hosts, Mike and Robin Murphy!

We are still looking for acquisition items, and if you had something in mind to bring to the Chili Cookoff but just weren't able to make it, don't fret! Just contact Lisa Wikholm, Special Events Manager at Lwikholm@shorecrest.org and let her know that you've got something special for the Big Event.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Next Friday, February 3 is Grandparents and Special Friends Day. An informational flyer was sent to all families in the bi-monthly packet which should be arriving in homes today. To view this flyer with the complete instructions for the day, click for PDF document or web page.

grandparent

A few key points to remember:

  • Activities for the grandparents will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast served in the Student Center.
  • Although parking will be at a premium that day, our maintenance staff will be assisting to make sure that everyone is taken care of.
  • It is important that guests not arrive at the classrooms for visits and tours before 10:00 a.m., as the students will be busy preparing for our guests' arrival.
  • The seating in the Janet Root Theatre is limited and we request that only grandparents and special friends be seated. We want our guests to enjoy the grade level presentations by providing them with the best seats in the house and minimizing the number who will be standing.

Parents, thank you for all that you have done to encourage the attendance of grandparents and special friends for our students. It will be a great day!

grandparents

The schedule for the day includes:

  • 8:30-9:00 a.m. - Continental Breakfast in the Student Activity Center
  • 9:15-10:00 a.m. - Student performances in the Janet Root Theatre
  • 10:15-11:00 a.m. - Class Visits and Campus Tours

Classes will resume their normal schedule for the remainder of the day following the time of class visits and tours.

Thank you for your help in making this a special day for our grandparents and special friends.

Middle Division

Parent Coffee Next Week

Our first coffee for the New Year will be held Wednesday, February 1 at 8:00 a.m. on the Sher Center Breezeway. Please join us to discuss Middle Division news. If the weather is too chilly, we'll meet inside. See you there!

Lifeskills Outdoor Experience

This past Wednesday, almost fifty students from the Middle Division participated in a Pathfinders outdoor education class at the Dayspring facility. Students worked with each other to solve puzzles and engage in activities on the Challenge Course.

Dayspring

While it was a fun day of running, jumping, and swinging, the field trip also stressed the importance of teamwork, listening, and trying different solutions. Thanks to our great facilitators, Jimbo, Lynn, Barney, and Donald. Looking forward to the trip with the fourth quarter group!

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

We look forward to greeting lots of grandparents on February 3. After the program in the Janet Root Theatre, grandparents are asked to visit the Lower Division first, then come to the Middle Division Breezeway, where grandchildren will be waiting. Together you will be able to tour the Middle Division, and we can't wait to see you!

Curriculum Fair

The Middle Division Curriculum Fair will take place on Thursday, February 9 from 9 a.m. until noon. Parents in grades 4 through 8 have received a letter detailing specifics on this event, which will give parents an opportunity to visit all classes in the Middle Division. We hope that you will be able to join us.

Guts and Stuff

The seventh grade participated in an all-day field trip this week at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa.

guts and stuff

While at MOSI the students participated in two labs called Guts and Stuff and Vital Signs. The students dissected sheep lungs and learned about how the circulatory and respiratory systems are connected. The rest of the day was spent investigating the other science related exhibits at MOSI. It was a great day of science fun and education beyond the classroom.

D.A.R.E. Graduation

Fifth grade students will celebrate the culmination of their Drug Awareness Resistance Education with St. Petersburg Police Officer James Gilmore. Their D.A.R.E. graduation takes place in the Janet Root Theatre on Wed., Feb. 1, at 1:00 p.m. There will be a reception in the Sher Breezeway immediately following the ceremony.

The Car of the Future

Joe Peiterzac from Progress Energy visited the sixth graders to speak on alternative energy sources, specifically hydrogen fuel cells. The students were able to see a hydrogen fuel cell car that runs on hydrogen gas instead of gasoline. The fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity which powers an electric motor. The emission from the car is pure water!

fuel tank

This presentation enabled the students to experience a car that is environmentally friendly and could be the first type of car they purchase ten years from now.

Lower Division

100th Day of School

Do you know anyone 100 years old? Can you imagine trying to pet 100 puppies? How big would your closet need to be if you had 100 pairs of shoes? What would 100 scoops of ice cream taste like? Those are the kinds of questions teachers and students in our Lower Division have been asking and answering lately. Friday, Jan. 27, was Shorecrest's 100th Day of School. All day, the students enjoyed projects and books that honored that glorious day. It was also a day that was well into the second half of our school year! [more photos]

There are dozens of books available in many libraries and book stores that refer to the 100th day of school. Just a few of those books used this year were 100th Day Worries, by Margery Cuyler; One Hundred Hungry Ants," by Elinor J. Pinczes; Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten, by Joseph Slate; and You Can Name 100 Cars, Trains, Boats and Planes! a Cartwheel Book by Scholastic.

Some classes Day 100attempted 100th Day snacks that included estimating and counting marshmallows, M&M's, pretzel sticks and Gummie Bears. Other classes tried estimating, and then stepping off, 100 paces to see how far the experience would take the students. While some of the youngest students still attempted to write to 100, others were confident with division facts involving that magic number.

Volunteer moms and dads were kept especially busy as some students attempted to produce 100 fingerprints on a piece of art paper. Imaginations ran wild when students were asked to write about, color and draw something creative that "might become real trouble" if pupils were to collect 100 of them! How about elephants or monkeys?

As the day drew to a close and the pick-up car lines began to lengthen, students were heavily laden with hundreds of beans, pieces of pasta, award certificates and crowns. It was simple to determine whether the busy day was successful. Parents counted hundreds of smiles as happy children climbed aboard.

Shorecrest Teachers Sew Tote Bags for Charity

Several of our Shorecrest teachers are members of an honorary society of women educators called Delta Kappa Gamma International. Their local chapter has selected Sallie House, an emergency shelter for children in transition, as their community service project. The children come to Sallie House often with only the clothes they are wearing. When they leave to go back home, with other relatives, or into foster care, the children have acquired some personal possessions. How nice it is if they are able to carry their newly acquired personal items in a colorful tote bag rather than a plastic grocery bag.

tote bags

Volunteers for this chapter meet several times a year to sew these tote bags to donate to Sallie House. Some fabric is donated and the rest purchased by the chapter members for this worthwhile project. Over the past three years, more than 150 bags have been made and donated. Shorecrest teachers who have participated in this effort include Shirley Bassford, Kate Burton, Wendy Drexler, Jill Killgore, Joanne Minke, Carol Moyle, and Lee Roberts. The lives of these needy children are a little brighter because of the commitment of these ladies, and the ladies have a lot of fun working together on this project.

Florida Kindergarten Council

Mrs. Jennings attended the Florida Kindergarten Board meeting in Winter Park on Monday. The FKC Conference for Educators sponsored by the Board this year had 400 attendees, the largest group ever. This coming Monday Mrs. Jennings will be at Canterbury to do their joint FCIS/FKC change of head visit.

Bay Area Association of Independent Schools

Our Lower Division PE teachers attended their annual BAAIS conference last Thursday. This conference gives the teachers an opportunity to discuss and brainstorm with other PE teachers in the area. One of the ideas Shorecrest brought back from the conference was to allow students a time to explore with different types of equipment. We used this "free choice" lesson in PE on Friday, and the children not only had a great time, but also were given the ability to be creative.

Early Childhood

Whales and Kids Teaching Kids

measuring a whaleMrs. Moyle's class was learning about whales this week and decided to find out just how big a blue whale (the biggest of the species) really is.

The children gathered outside and put unifix cubes together in a line the length of a real whale. That was pretty exciting, but then a Middle Division teacher happened by. When she found out what they were doing, she told her son, Jacob, who is in second grade. The next day, Jacob came to visit JK and showed the children the blue whale baleen his father had brought back from Alaska.

He did a great job of explaining what the baleen was and describing how he got it and how big the whale's mouth really was. The younger children were fascinated and truly attentive, a testimonial to Jacob's teaching and communication skills!

A Friendship Garden

The Junior Kindergarten classes are hard at work during playground time these days! They are creating a beautiful friendship garden in time for Grandparent Day. Each child brought a potted plant from home to contribute to the effort.

gardening

The children are transplanting their own plants to the garden plot, and each will be responsible for watering and tending to their own plant for the remainder of the year.

Alpha Firefighters

Before exploring last week, the Alpha teachers painted the windows with burning buildings! The children put on firefighting gear (hats and coats), took their hoses (squirt bottles), and extinguished the flames by squirting water on the paintings.

firefighters

It was great fun, and some of the children may have decided that firefighting is the career for them!

Shorecrest Students Take Over State Government!

Last week, six Upper Division students (Katie S., Kaitlin B., Summerly B., Candace G., Sandy L., and Gabe N.) participated in the annual Youth in Government conference in Tallahassee. They joined over 700 high school students from throughout the State who participated in a three-day mock government session. Throughout the conference, students had access to the House and Senate chambers, the Supreme Court and Cabinet rooms.

Youth in Government

For the program, students focus on a branch of government - legislative, executive or judicial. Our students participated in the legislative portion of the conference and were required to draft a prospective bill. In Tallahassee, the bills were placed on legislative dockets and students presented their bills to other students in the House or Senate.

All students engaged in pro and con debate on the legislation; bill presenters fielded questions on the merits of their legislation before moving to a final vote. Some of the Shorecrest bill topics included acts relating to banning the use of cell phones while driving, severe weather evacuation and recovery preparedness for impoverished Floridians, and the redistribution of public school tax monies.

At the conclusion of the conference, Youth In Government advisors presented a top award: runner-up for best bill to Gabe N.

Something New

While reading A Conspiracy of Paper the Freshmen will have an opportunity to discuss the conferencebook in an online conference, as well as raise questions or make comments relating to the novel. Mr. Heller will moderate the discussion and respond to questions. This is completely voluntary, but it is hoped that students will help each other by this on-line communication. This should be available by next week and can be accessed via student Shoreline accounts.

Junior Advisees Use Internet Site to Work on Time Management.

After receiving a time management activity suggestion from Dr. Pam Hamilton, a Junior advisee group visited the computer lab to check out their personal use of each 24 hours.

There were charts separating the day into activities and a special visual that broke down the day into a 24 hour 'pie.' It was very illuminating for the students and will be a topic of discussion for later advisory sessions. Thank you, Dr. Hamilton!
