E-Bytes is an Award Winner!by Diana WhittleThe National Association of Independent Schools has awarded E-Bytes Online Newsletter with an Award of Excellence. This competition includes all private universities and colleges as well as secondary schools, and an Award of Excellence is given to only three or four entrees. As an award recipient, E-Bytes will be displayed in the Awards area at the CASE III Conference, in Nashville, TN for others to see, and then it will be sent to CASE National for archival. I would like to thank everyone - faculty, administrators, and parents - who take the time to submit information to Bob Clingman and me each week. E-Bytes is truly a team effort, so three cheers to all of us! Updating E-mailIf you need to change your e-mail address or would like to add additional e-mail addresses, please send your e-mail addresses to the registrar at jroberge@shorecrest.org. Thanks! Grandparent and Special Friends DayDid Your Invitations Get Mailed?Shorecrest's 22nd annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day will be held on Friday, February 3, 2006. Invitations for this event were mailed just after the Winter Break. If you are not sure that you responded to the e-mail to Confirm Your Invitation List, click here on the Invitation List link to view the names of all of those who were mailed an invitation. If you do not see the name of the Grandparent or Special Friend on the Invitation List link and would like an invitation to be sent to them, please send a fax (727-521-1452) or e-mail (mtomasino@shorecrest.org) as soon as possible with the following information:
An invitation will then be sent immediately to ensure your desired guests are included. The schedule for the day includes: 8:30-9:00 a.m. - Continental Breakfast in the Student Activity Center 9:15-10:00 a.m. - Student performances in the Janet Root Theatre 10:15-11:00 a.m. - Class Visits and Campus Tours Classes will resume their normal schedule for the remainder of the day following the time of class visits and tours. This is always a great day for our students and their guests! Results of last week's poll:WORLD PEACE - How do we make it happen?By thinking of others first. By giving generously to those less fortunate, and by demonstrating peace within our homes first. If we are peaceful at home then we can spread peace to those we know and so on and so forth. We can not spread peace to the world instantly, it takes time Well, world peace can happen in many places like your house or school. We all have to help, not just one person can make world peace. We all have to work together and achieve the ultimate goal. We send out flyers. Why don't you take your part in "unpolluting" the world? World Peace? Umm, all the countries should stop fighting over everything. Make sure every country is wealthy and is counted in making decisions. Friendship and communication! Being kind to the world! Pray. Well, first someone in every country, state, city, province, or whatever has to take a stand. After all that's said and done, there should be at least a ten-million person peace march for every continent. We discover a civilization on another planet and then we all team up against a common enemy. Kind of kidding.... Give everyone a can of Coke, hold hands, and sing! Don't fight back. Don't worry, be happy! The fundamental cause of war is competition for land, resources, and wealth. This competition can be eliminated by population control and equitable sharing, or by going into space bigtime and getting way more land, resources, and wealth. The second method is the one that might actually happen. Everyone working together! We must be compassionate, honest and truly giving to one another. Life is good when there is support and love that you can count on... We must always give and enjoy the elation of being a giver...What have you done for mankind today ? Live by the "Golden Rule." It is that easy in principal. Help the homeless! It is in changing that things find repose. Take away human nature; put computer chips in everyone to control human behavior. Also, figure out how to control Earth's climate, develop a universal religion (ha!), stop all scientific research, control the animal kingdom and eradicate all diseases. But, mostly, the first directive listed above. Don't make so many people go to Iraq, end the war, and be a better person. A first step has to be new leadership for our country. Can't we all just get along? Stop terrorism. The U.S. is doing that right now. With love from everyone. It could happen if I became nice and everyone else became nice. I was in a pageant that was on television and I requested world peace. You have to make sure people know about it. I don't think that there is such a thing as world peace. We won't get rid of guns, because the argument will go on about how it's for safety and defense. And as long as we have people, we're going to have criminals. World peace is a myth that we want to believe, just like Big Foot. No war. Hypnotize everybody to think that the world is at peace and if somebody steps out of line - shoot them with a tranquilizer gun and take away all weapons and memory of weapons or how to make them. If people would just cooperate and stop fighting over "religion" (a.k.a. land) and everybody would use their conscience to know that it is bad to kill people. Treat others as you want to be treated. This includes overall kindness, lending a hand, driving the speed limit, letting people in line with only one grocery item, smiling - all those little things that add up to greater things. How Banks WorkThe Bank of St. Petersburg was kind enough to host Boy Scout Troop 303 on Monday to educate them about how banks work. David Miles and his co-workers graciously toured the students, showing them the vault, the safety deposit boxes, and how to roll coins. Each child was given a "goodie" bag, as well as a silver dollar and the coins they rolled... and a keepsake security camera photo! Sign Up for E-Bytes RemindersIf you do not currently receive a weekly e-mail on Fridays notifying you that E-Bytes is updated, please send a request with your name and e-mail address to ebytes@shorecrest.org and we will be happy to add you to the list. New StudentNatalie S. has joined the Shorecrest Class of 2009 and the girls varsity basketball team as well. She comes to us from Cleveland. Welcome to Shorecrest, Natalie! |

On the basis of its first ten-year chapter review, Shorecrest's membership in the Cum Laude Society has been renewed "with enthusiasm." The review consists of a detailed update on changes in the faculty, the school's facilities, its course offerings, and overall program which have occurred since we were recognized as a Cum Laude Society chapter in 1995. It also includes an anonymous profile of the last three years' of Shorecrest students inducted into the Society including GPAs, standardized test scores, AP scores, and college matriculation.
The society's board of regents and officers were "impressed by (Shorecrest's) performance" during its first ten years of membership and expressed pleasure that we belong to the society.
Oceanography students use slinkies to visualize properties of ocean waves.

Subsequently, the eighth graders are designing oceans with beaches including designed waves. Wave tubes are being created to observe deep, transitional and shallow waves.
Thirty-one Middle Division students [photo] will represent Shorecrest at the Pinellas County History Fair on February 3, 2006 at East Lake High School. This is the fourth year that Shorecrest has competed in the county history fair, which is a step in the national competition set up by the National History Day Organization.

This year's theme is "Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events," and the students could enter four categories, including historical paper, exhibit, documentary, or performance. Those who place first and second at the county competition are invited to compete in the Florida State History Fair competition in Tallahassee in May. Good luck, Chargers!
The sixth graders will have a morning field trip on Thursday, Jan. 19 to view the movie Magnificent Desolation - Walking on the Moon. This a 3-D IMAX movie narrated by Tom Hanks that will enhance the unit on astronomy the students are currently studying. The students are also working on a technology project that involves playing the roles of astronauts who have returned from a mission in space. They are working in small groups preparing a PowerPoint project that will be used to enhance a simulated news conference. The young astronauts will detail the events and discoveries on their mission to the media!
"Reiterate" means to " say again." It is from the Latin iterum, meaning "a second time." That is what the Middle Division Latin students have done. For the second year they have had their say at the annual Mini Latin Forum at Lakeside Ranch High School in Bradenton. This is an invitational tournament for area Latin students in all levels. This year, nine students met at 7 a.m. on a cold Saturday morning, January 7, to compete once again. All nine students placed even when going up against high school upper level Latin students. The achievements are:
Petar Y. was scheduled to compete but became ill at the last minute.
A special thank you to Mr. John Forney who helped chaperone.
These students are already planning to return to the scene of their triumph next year complete with team t-shirts!
The Sher Center Middle Division students dedicate their morning sessions to pledging their allegiance to the American flag. Color guards from both the fifth and sixth grades volunteer to place the flag in front of the students and then initiate the pledge.

This week Nick N. and Zack M. are graciously participating in the morning tradition.
Fifth grade students have been working hard at keeping their lockers neat and organized during the first semester. The fifth grade team of teachers are very proud of the efforts of these wonderfully responsible fifth graders. Thank you, students.

This Wednesday 39 seventh graders attended the TIP Math Help Session for the SAT, given by Mrs. Beth Wall, chair of the Upper Division Math Department. This was a great session where Mrs. Wall concentrated on test directions and strategies to familiarize students with what to expect on their big test day January 28. The second Help Session will be held Wednesday, January 18, with a similar format but concentrating on the verbal and writing areas. It will be conducted by Dr. Emerson Littlefield, chair of the Upper Division English Department. This session will be held in the Student Activity Center at 3:15.
On January 10, seventh and eighth graders gathered for a moment of silence at Garrett's Garden to mark the first anniversary of his passing. Mementos are often placed in the garden throughout the year, and his classmates remember him always.
The Lower Division is proud of fourth graders Skyler E. and Nick B. for competing in the school finals.

They each received a Geography Resource Book at the flagpole honoring their desire to learn more about the world.
Lower Division students have been learning about group dynamics this month in guidance. Fourth graders were challenged to accurately re-construct an object
made out of Zoobs. The tricky part is that only the visionaries on the team know what the finished object looks like. They share this verbal information with the messengers who then relay the information to the builders. Add a time limit and three other teams, and it really gets interesting. As always, we process each activity at the end. Students were able to relate this experience to how rumors get out of hand, communicating with on-line friends, and group projects in the classroom.
Shorecrest hosted the Lower Division Art BAAIS meeting on Tuesday, January 10 [photo]. Thirteen teachers from ten different schools were represented, including Canterbury, Wellington, St. Paul's, St. Stephen's, Admiral Farragut Academy, Independent Day School, St. Mary's Episcopal Day School, St. John's Episcopal, Out of Door Academy, and Shorecrest of course. We shared ideas for projects, discussed curriculum and special event planning, and toured our beautiful campus. The visiting teachers got a chance to see each of our visual arts classrooms and meet our art teachers and students.
Congratulations to our citizens of the month for December:

These students exemplify the life skills we teach and practice here at Shorecrest. Thank you, parents, for instilling these wonderful values in your children. You would be pleased to know that they are modeling what you taught them. Thank you for being partners with us in this most important endeavor.

Geography BeeThe National Geography Bee is a national competition that Shorecrest competes in each year. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to demonstrate their knowledge of geography and world events.
Lower and Middle Division students gathered in the Janet Root Theater this past Monday to cheer on the grade level finalists for the school-wide Bee. Ten students from fourth through eighth grade took part by fielding both written and oral questions.
Joey S. was the first place winner in this event, and will now take a written examination in hopes of qualifying for the state level competition. Congratulations to Joey and our contestants for their great performance in this year's Bee.

Three Cheers for:Fifth grader Alex S., who started the Alex Kookies for Kids Corporation. He started the corporation in 2003 to raise funds for children's charities and has so far raised over $4,000.
