Calendar

The Revised 2008-2009 General Calendar is available on the web through the Calendars link on the homepage and E-Bytes. Also, here is a PDF.

Do You Skype in Spanish?

Sra. Andrés is looking for Spanish speakers in our Shorecrest community who would like to Skype and participate in interviews in order for our Upper Division students to practice their conversational skills. Skype is an interactive tool, much like a webcast, that would facilitate holding conversations or interviews from off-campus. All that's needed is a (free) Skype account, a computer with a web camera and a microphone.

If Sra. Andrés has enough participants, then Mrs. Anna Baralt, Lower Division instructional technologist, will conduct a mini-session for those interested in Skyping. Using Skype is fun, free, and the students appreciate a classroom guest who is visiting their classroom by virtual means.

If interested, please e-mail Sra. Andrés at tandresc @shorecrest.org.

Just think, you can practice your Spanish with our students from just about anywhere!

The inside of the gym looked like a sea of yellow as students proudly wore their golden shirts that celebrated the seventh and eighth grade Middle Division Center Groundbreaking on Thursday, May 22. Although the rain put a damper on actually digging into the earth in the Razook Quad, the jazz band played, the Middle Division chorus sang, and the ceremony took place without delay in the Crisp Gymnasium.

Mike Murphy

Headmaster Mike Murphy welcomed the crowd of parents, faculty, donors, administrators and students. Additional speakers included Pam Murphy, co-chair of the Capital Campaign, and Middle Division Head Dr. Schoolman, who talked about the benefits of the new Middle Division Center, as did three students, eighth grader Nick N., fifth grader Ali A., and sixth grader Kenny S.

Hugh Schoolman

Big Event co-chairs Melinda Pletcher and Laura Horwitz presented a check for $100,000 to the Capital Campaign, profits from this year's Big Event, Viva Las Vegas.

Board of Trustees Chair Cathy Collins congratulated the school for raising enough money to have two groundbreakings within a year and recognized the nine donors who would take the shovels and, on a dry day, commence to dig up a bit of dirt. Although there wasn't any digging, the crowd remained upbeat and excited at the prospect of a brand new seventh and eighth grade center.

Afterwards there was a reception in the Sher Center Breezeway. Construction of the new center will begin in several weeks.

Baccalaureate Festivities

Baccalaureate
(photo pages)

Baccalaureate took place on Sunday, May 18, and parents, friends, and faculty filled the Janet Root Theatre to hear members of the senior class reflect on their experiences at Shorecrest. After the 63 seniors processed onto the stage wearing their caps and gowns, Crishana W., Student Council Co-President, welcomed the crowd and introduced Headmaster Mike Murphy.

Crishana

Mr. Murphy offered some lessons about Baccalaureate and Commencement week, "Even though we are in the same theater at the same time, what is happening is very different for the individuals gathered. Senior year can be a very emotional time and because of those emotions, we learn some powerful lessons… keep this week in perspective because there are bigger events and bigger moments right around the corner...."

Seniors Mike R., Lauren S., Nick S., Jeff R., and Mark S. reminisced about special moments at the "Crest" and offered their thoughts on college, careers and life.

History teacher Ron Heller was chosen by the senior class to be the faculty speaker. He recounted some memories of the Class of 2008 and then closed his speech by quoting from Act I, Scene III of "Hamlet" when Polonius gives advice to his son Laertes on his departure for college in Paris.

See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
The friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg'd comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel; but being in,
Bear't that the opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

Senior Rachel W., President of the National Honor Society, ended the ceremony by quoting from Linda Ellis' "The Dash" and reminding her classmates that it is "how we spend our dash" (the time between one's birth and death) that really matters.

valedictorian

After the ceremony concluded, seniors and their families and friends had dinner at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club where they enjoyed a senior class video and endured a good-natured roast by Head of Upper Division Stephen Manella.

Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 4:30 p.m.

musician• Seventh grader Cissy R., who on May 19th participated in "An Evening of Music" with four of her fellow musicians from the Pinellas Youth Symphony. The Power of a Penny

Pennies for Peace

Third graders Shannon H. and Samantha L. with Mrs. Jennings hold a check for the Central Asia Institute from the Pennies for Peace drive. Shorecrest students in K-12 collected over 100,000 pennies over the last month. Freshman Tanja G., sophomore Chantal J., seventh grader Zach G., and fifth graders Sarah M. and Elle S. joined the third graders in making the check presentation in honor of Penny Jennings at the celebration last Friday.

Hunger Doesn't Take a Holiday

Free Clinic

The St. Petersburg Free Clinic's Food Bank manager stopped by last Friday to pick up food and personal hygiene items collected by Middle Division students during the Student Council's end-of-the-year project. The student leaders in grades 5-8 helped load the boxes into the van.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

As they take part in the annual locker clean-up ritual on May 29, Middle Division students will be keeping in mind the three R's. Seventh grader Chas B. announced the school supplies recycling drive that will reduce the amount of school supplies that go into the waste stream at the end of a school year.

Each advisory will collect any unused and gently used school supplies, such as pencils, markers, crayons, glue sticks and other items, and donate them to local organization such as PARC who can reuse them.

Mrs. Kelly's sixth graders, who worked at the PARC's cultural arts center on Community Service Day, learned that the organization is always in need of supplies.

By recycling the school supplies that are no longer wanted or needed, the students will be helping our local community as well as the environment.

If you have questions, please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@shorecrest.org or (727) 456-7510.
