Calendar

The Revised 2008-2009 General Calendar is available on the web through the Calendars link on the homepage and E-Bytes. Also, here is a PDF.

Do You Skype in Spanish?

Sra. Andrés is looking for Spanish speakers in our Shorecrest community who would like to Skype and participate in interviews in order for our Upper Division students to practice their conversational skills. Skype is an interactive tool, much like a webcast, that would facilitate holding conversations or interviews from off-campus. All that's needed is a (free) Skype account, a computer with a web camera and a microphone.

If Sra. Andrés has enough participants, then Mrs. Anna Baralt, Lower Division instructional technologist, will conduct a mini-session for those interested in Skyping. Using Skype is fun, free, and the students appreciate a classroom guest who is visiting their classroom by virtual means.

If interested, please e-mail Sra. Andrés at tandresc @shorecrest.org.

Just think, you can practice your Spanish with our students from just about anywhere!

Library Volunteers

Volunteers are needed in the library on May 21-22.

The librarians are looking for "inventory angels" to see which books are on the shelves at the end of the year. The inventory will be taking place Wednesday, May 21 and Thursday, May 22.

We'd like to get a general schedule for the librarians, so a commitment of a couple hours in the morning or afternoon would be great. Helpers can come with a partner or be matched up with someone when they arrive.

No experience is needed. There will be drinks and snacks, so if you have a few hours to spare, volunteering in the library is a relaxing way to help out our school. Please contact Sidney Smith at sidjuju @tampabay.rr.com or (727) 215-3686 if you can help out!

What's the most important lesson you've learned about life that you'd like to pass on?

Being nice to others.
- Ninth grader

Live each day to its fullest cause you never know when it'll be your last.
- Blonde

LOL! Whatever is happening in my life it's not just about me! It's about the people! No matter how stubbornly independent I may be I remind myself that I'm never alone in my experience and I never will be! We're in this together... like it or not.
- Mom

That all people are not created in God's image. In fact, most people are barely presentable.
- Parent

Don't let your grades drop in the last couple weeks of school.

Grades don't matter later in life. Only you know how good you are.
- Wise person

Stop trying to make others feel guilty for doing something you are too afraid to do yourself!

Friends are more important then your girl or boy friend. Listen and don't ignore. Also your enemy in school is just jealous of you so just be nice but you don't have to be her best friend. Be nice to EVERYONE even the teachers you don't like, just say one word, Hi. It will make their day. Also teachers don't give out marks for unreasonable things. Thanks.
- Fifth grader (I promise I'm a fifth grader)

Cherish each moment and have the strength to realize that everything happens for a reason. Believe me, this will make things a lot simpler! Oh, also believe in yourself. Never let anyone make you feel inferior, know your own strengths. Wow, I'm rambling...
- Optimist

Accept the things you cannot change, Have courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Feedback

Mike MurphyEarlier today all Shorecrest parents were sent via e-mail our annual school performance survey. The very structure of the survey is an admission of the importance we place on the school-parent-child relationship.

Please take five to ten minutes to let us know how you, your child and the school performed this year. Even though it may be difficult to think back to the projects and activities eight months ago, please try to take the most broadminded approach possible when evaluating performance.

We would greatly appreciate your response as soon as possible - survey ends June 5, 2008.

Your feedback will be appreciated.

Cheers!

No E-Mail Wednesday

Shorecrest will not be connected to the under constructionInternet on Wednesday, May 21. E-mail will not go in or out. Brighthouse crews will be on campus moving the fiber data links from the current server room to Landy Hall.

For those on campus, there will be no off-campus access all day. Internal services will be up and running, including report cards, attendance and teacher web pages. Filemaker will work. Students will be able to log in and use computers but will not be able to do online research, as off-campus web sites will be inaccessible. Only local applications will be available to students.

There will be no Internet access (Firefox/Safari).

FirstClass will work for on-campus e-mail, but off-campus e-mail will not go out during the day. Incoming and outgoing e-mail will be stored and then delivered when the connection is restored.

Parent Ambassadors

Some of the Admissions Office Parent Ambassadors met on Monday to receive the names of their new families and to brainstorm ways to welcome them to the Shorecrest community. We are fortunate to have such an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Parent Ambassadors from pre-school through high school play an important role in helping our new families become connected before the school year begins.

Parent Ambassadors

Many thanks to our wonderful Parent Ambassadors!

Used Uniform Collection May 27-30

No need to store your "too small" uniforms over the summer!

Uniforms will be collected the last week of school for the Used Uniform Sale which will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Only gently used Lands End clothing may be sold.

To Sell:

  • Please place the gently used uniforms in the bins that will be located in the Lower Division breezeway adjacent to the Lower Division Office and in the Middle Division office the last week of school.
  • If you would like to receive the proceeds from your donation, label each article of clothing with the size, boy or girl, and your name.
  • If you would like to donate the proceeds of the sale to the Shorecrest Parent Association, no label is required. (Thanks to all those parents who are donating your proceeds to SPA. It is very much appreciated!)
  • Pick up your proceeds from the sale and any unsold uniforms the first week of school. Any unsold items left behind will be donated to SPA.

If you have any questions, please contact Michele Sobota or Marcia Johnston via e-mail or phone.

Letter from the New Shorecrest Parent Association President

Nikki McQueenIt's hard to believe that another school year is coming to a close, and as it does, I reflect on all of the wonderful friendships I have developed this past year because of my involvement in our parent association. Being active in our association has given me the opportunity to not only develop stronger relationships with the parents in my children's grades, but also throughout all grade levels.

Our SPA Board and Chairs are already busy planning meetings and activities for the 2008/2009 school year. I strongly encourage you to come out and participate. I guarantee you will be glad you did!

You may be asking, "What does the parent association do exactly?" Whether you are enjoying the Fall Festival, purchasing Greenery, cooling off with refreshments during Poetry in the Park and Back-to-School Nights, admiring school and class pictures, participating in the Holiday Food and Gift Drive, receiving a warm welcome from car greeters in the morning, taking comfort in the fact that your children have a healthy lunch for their Community Service Days, taking advantage of huge savings at the Uniform Exchange, catching up on school activities through bi-weekly mailings, or celebrating Grandparents and Special Friends Day, your parent association takes an active role in providing these activities and so much more.

This year we are moving our meetings to the second Tuesday of the month with our first meeting scheduled for September 9 in the Student Activity Center at 8:15 a.m. This is our annual "Kick Off" meeting, so please mark your calendar and plan on joining us! We realize that your time is valuable, so this year we are instituting our 59 minute guarantee - we promise the meetings will be less than one hour!

Lastly, please continue our Box Tops and Goodsearch programs which provide additional funding for our association's activities at no cost to you. To learn more, feel free to contact me or go to www.goodsearch.com.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Parent Association President. By working together, we can enhance the educational experience for our children here at Shorecrest.

     Sincerely,
     Nikki McQueen
     SPA President

  • Time: 8:15 a.m.
  • Where: Admissions Office

Do you remember what it felt like to be a new family to Shorecrest?

We know how important the New Parent Dinner is to all of our new families. For many years, Susan Wehrmann and Gayle Horden have graciously planned, organized and prepared the amazing meal enjoyed by all. Sadly, the 2007-2008 school year was their last one, so we need a few people to help us carry on this wonderful tradition with FLIK, our caterer.

Are You Good At…

  • Addressing invitations?
  • Making nametags?
  • Decorating?
  • Welcoming guests?
  • Serving food?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, we can use your help! It takes just a few hours of your time. Please come to a fun meeting and help us brainstorm for the event. If you can't attend this meeting, but are interested in working on this committee, please contact Diana, Caryn or Lisa in the Admissions Office (727) 456-7511 or admissions@shorecrest.org.

Service Learning

It's a Wrap!

The four-week-long Pennies for Peace drive ended this week. The final total is still being tallied, but Shorecrest students in grades K-12 came through with over 100,000 pennies.

Several fifth graders, including Alice D., Jake S., Avery C., and Elijah B., helped count the coins in groups of 100, along with freshman Tanja G., after school on Wednesday.

counting pennies

A check for $1,000 was presented to the Central Asia Institute in honor of Penny Jennings at the Penny Jennings Day celebration.

Synovus Bank has been very helpful with counting the first 50,000 or so pennies that were turned in, which were sent to their vault. They provided canvas bags and coin wrappers for the students to help count the rest.

If you have questions, please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@shorecrest.org or (727) 456-7510.
