Service Learning

Middle Division Community Service Day

The entire Middle Division student body and faculty spent the morning last Friday, April 18, partipating in various service activities that benefited our local community during the annual Community Service Day.

community service day
(Many more pictures to come)

The environment got some special attention, in advance of Earth Day, with groups of eighth graders cleaning up Ft. DeSoto beach and recycling our on-campus Spartina salt marsh grass nursery. One group moved and re-planted the Mercier butterfly garden, which was created last year to honor retired English teacher Denise Mercier.

Another group of eighth graders had the opportunity to work for Habitat for Humanity at their warehouse preparing windows and trusses for future homes.

Mr. Dionne and Mr. Hodgson teamed up their eighth and seventh grade advisories to visit the nursing home at the Bay Pines VA. Their students spent time with veterans learning about their service and life histories. Our students' presence was so welcomed that they've been invited back for monthly visits with the veterans.

Other seventh graders used their knowledge of pollinators from science and art classes to work at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve to clean up and re-plant the butterfly gardens. Mrs. Cobb's advisory spent the morning at the Florida Holocaust Museum helping clean up and organize the facility and being a part of what happens behind the scenes at the museum they've visited.

service day

Ms. Idinge's advisory worked with Tampa Bay Watch to build oyster domes that provide habitats for oysters to grow and help filter the water.

A group of sixth graders went to work for the Child Life Department at All Children's Hospital and assembled arts and crafts supplies and "Dr." kits for patients. They returned to campus and continued their service by weeding the gardens at the Early Childhood Center and later singing to and with the Alpha students.

Mrs. Kelly's advisory worked with adults with developmental disabilities at PARC's Cultural Arts Center. They helped create centerpieces and decorations for a fundraiser and worked with clients on art projects and jewelry making.

Mr. Cruise and Mrs. Resler, who worked at Gandy Beach last year, took their advisories, again, this year for a litter pick up with Keep Pinellas Beautiful. By the time their sixth graders, along with Ms. Peter's fifth graders, left the beach, they had picked up about 850 lbs. of litter!

service day

Another group worked at the St. Pete Free Clinic's Food Bank with Mrs. Jones unpacking and organizing donated peanut butter and paper goods. Ms. Artze's advisory followed up their visit the week before with puppies who are learning to become guide dogs and their puppy raisers with a visit to Southeastern Guide Dogs to help socialize the younger puppies-in-training.

Mr. Marchetti's advisory spent the morning at the Neighborly Care Network's Largo Adult Day Center with students visiting with and interviewing seniors. The group of students, who went to the Haskell Library with Mrs. Bassford, to inventory the shelves and organize the books enjoyed their work so much that they've asked if they can go back as an advisory to continue their "behind-the-shelves" work at the library.

The students and teachers enjoyed a taco lunch from Tijuana Flats, provided courtesy of SPA. They attended the afternoon assembly, which featured a guest speaker, Susan Lawton, Director of Volunteer Services for United Way Tampa Bay, and then student spoke about their service activities and those served by their efforts.

(See page two's Middle Division section for some of what the students shared)

Pennies for Peace

Penny collections are continuing throughout campus. The Lower Division students already have filled one five-gallon jar and are working on their second. Jars in Middle and Upper Divisions offices are continuing to fill up.

Last week, third grader Shannon H. brought in her pennies that she's been collecting since she was four years old. This week, eighth grader George Z., who's new at Shorecrest this year and didn't grow up with Mrs. Jennings, was on his knees in the Middle Division emptying out a plastic bag full of pennies into the jar.

Pennies for PeaceEveryone's been pitching in, and we'll share more "penny stories" each week as the collection grows.

The drive will end on May 15, and the total will be donated to the Central Asia Institute on May 16 in honor of Penny Jennings on Penny Jennings Day at Shorecrest.

Message from Mike Murphy

Mission - Possible

Mike Murphy

"To provide our students with opportunities to grow intellectually and morally, to find artistic fulfillment, to achieve physical fitness, and to develop a sense of their responsibility to our local and global communities."

One translation of our mission might be that our school expects students to reach beyond their mental comfort zones, follow rules and be good citizens, find ways to be creative, care about what they eat and how they care for their health, and to understand why it is important to be invested in the development of the people and institutions where we live and where others live and then do something to support the people and strengthen the institutions.

There is an implicit understanding in our mission that we expect high levels of effort and achievement from our students, and we strive to meet the various elements identified in the statement. I think we need to add an explicit statement about achievement in our mission.

The last two weeks, like many of the previous weeks, were packed with students, teachers and parents contributing to remarkable achievements. Initially I started writing this article about how stimulating it is to be in my position. I am very fortunate that my role allows me to see the broad spectrum of activities, talents and achievements of the members of our school community. Over the weekend I took a few minutes to make a list of the people and their successes that I have been able to share in celebrating. They include: Anna Baralt winning a grant to advance GPS technology with her students, the performance of Fiddler on the Roof, the Grade 3 and Grade 8 self portraits, the announcement of the 48 new members of National Honor Society, the Boys Varsity Tennis Team winning the Region Championship and advancing to the State Tournament, eight students winning playwright competitions, the reading of Bill Leavengood's new play, wonderful generosity from parents supporting the annual fund and capital campaign, projects completed during Middle Division's Service Day, the Board of Trustees elaborate study on the proposed Middle Division building, and last but certainly not least, the Early Childhood Earth Day parade with recycled instruments. Yesterday Blake F. was named Valedictorian while Liz R. and Tommy M. were named co-Salutatorians. On Tuesday the Baseball Team won the semi-final game in the District Tournament. Thursday the Concert Band, All That Jazz Band, Intermediate and Beginning Bands and Broadway Chorus performed for our Spring Concert. And the beat goes on.

This past week parent volunteers worked on the Capital Campaign and Annual Fund. Other parents organized the Duathlon, worked in concessions, Helping Hands, or on classroom projects, sold Spirit Wear and supported the Kindergarten Quilting Day project.

Faculty, staff, trustees and students are all contributing to building a school culture that celebrates involvement, effort and achievement. It is not always easy, but I am convinced it is worth the effort. We are building a school community and culture that will serve many generations of children and families in greater St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay.

Cheers!

Spring Concert
(Newly added photos pages)

Spring Concert

Beautiful music filled the Janet Root Theater on Thursday as all four Shorecrest bands and the Middle Division Broadway Chorus presented their Spring Concerts. In the afternoon, they performed for the third through eighth grade students, and the evening performance was dedicated to family and friends.

Spring Concert

The Beginning Band impressed the audience with three numbers; it's hard to believe this is only their first year of music! The talented Intermediate Band showed great diversity playing Beethoven as well as the 50's hit "Splish Splash."

Jazz Band

Directed by Broadway and international star Michael McCarthy and his very talented wife Stephanie, the Middle Division Broadway Chorus masterfully performed four ABBA songs, "Money, Money, Money," "Chiquitita," "Mamma Mia" and "Thank You for the Music"  from the hit musical Mamma Mia.

Spring Concert

The award-winning All That Jazz Band had the audience swinging with their hip rendition of Charlie Parker's "Ornithology." Sophomore Yesol J. impressed everyone with her dramatically beautiful piano solo of Robert Schumann's "Traumerei."

Highlighting their wide range of talent, the Concert band expertly performed two baroque pieces by the Italian masters Vivaldi and Scarlatti and closed the show with their lively rendition of selections from the musical Grease. Their years of hard work and expert tutelage by the talented Mr. Tom Glaister was evident.

Beginning Band

Shorecrest is very proud of these talented students and Mr. Glaister and the McCarthys' ability to challenge and inspire them.
