The Revised 2008-2009 General Calendar is available on the web through the Calendars link on the homepage and E-Bytes. Also, here is a PDF. |
Each family should have received a registration form for Shorecrest's Second Annual Under the Lights Duathlon, set for Friday, April 18th.
The Duathlon is a bike/run/bike event for all Early Childhood, Lower and Middle Division students. New this year, we have a race course that takes first graders and older on a ½ mile bike loop off the track on a course that will be closed to traffic!

The first Duathlon, held last year, was a huge success with more than 230 students participating! Many first-time athletes - some as young as three - were stunned by the sense of accomplishment they felt at receiving their first-ever medals for finishing an athletic event. The pictures were priceless, and all the spectator parents were in awe.
Registration forms have been mailed to all Shorecrest families. So hurry and send in your registration forms to have your children experience this great race! Register early to save $5 on registration fees.
Register by March 28 and your child will be entered in a drawing for six highly sought after spots in the St. Anthony's Meek and Mighty Triathlon on April 26 (limited to participants from first to eighth grade due to age restrictions).
Click Duathlon to go to the Shorecrest Duathlon Website where you will find the registration form, race course distances, sponsorship opportunities, and our current sponsors.
We are selling Spirit Wear on Tuesday, March 25 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Spirit Wear room by the football field. Spirit Day is Wednesday, the 26th!

Here is a very easy way to raise money for Shorecrest. Goodsearch.com will donate a penny to Shorecrest every time their search engine is used. All you have to do is go to www.goodsearch.com and write Shorecrest Preparatory School in the box asking for the charity name before you conduct your search. Those pennies will add up quickly!

The money collected will go to the Shorecrest Parent Association to help fund Parent Grade Level Socials, refreshments for Back-to-School Nights and Poetry in the Park, Middle Division Cookie Days, Faculty Lunch Days, the Spring Luncheon and all of the other activities that SPA helps put on or organize.

Please see the Parents Page of the website for additional school information.

Reading rocks! I'm reading a lot of science fiction right now. It's very fun. I am constantly reading something new. If you're looking for a page turner, then you should read anything written by Holly Black. Or you could read what I will write in the future. I will be better than J. K. Rowling, Holly Black, and anyone who stands in my way.
For One More Day by Mitch Albom. A must read for teens and parents. Never take a single day for granted with those you love, you never know when it might end... and if/when it does, what would you do if you had one more day with them?

Service LearningCommunity Service DayTwo hundred twenty students and thirty faculty members dispersed throughout Pinellas County today for a variety of service projects in conjunction with the annual Upper Division Community Service Day. A few Seniors remained on campus to host seventh and eighth graders visiting from Academy Prep while half of the Class of 2008 worked on two Habitat for Humanity houses being built side-by-side in Clearwater. Shorecrest students filled in for several "alternative spring break" college groups from all over the country who are here for the week but took Friday off.
|
The Freshmen took part in projects that benefit the environment. They worked at the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve removing invasive vegetation and at Weedon Island with Tampa Bay Watch building oyster bars. Nearly half of the Class of 2011 went to clean up under the Bayside Bridge through Keep Pinellas Beautiful.
The students returned to campus to enjoy a well-earned lunch of Subway sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks, provided courtesy of Shorecrest Parent Association (SPA). The day culminated with a reflection assembly in the Janet Root Theatre where representatives from each group shared their experiences serving our local community. They all agreed that this annual Shorecrest tradition is a great way to begin Spring Break. If you have questions, please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510. |

Message from Mike MurphyBehind the Scenes
Even though we try to thank and recognize all the people who contribute to programs for the Shorecrest community, there are always people who do jobs that are overshadowed by the visibility of the work accomplished by those in large leadership positions. Before we take a week off for Spring Break, I want to take a few minutes to recognize the behind-the-scenes leaders at our school. These "Servant Leaders" represent one of the highest forms of leadership. They give not for recognition but rather for the good of the community. They are often more hard working than the Visionary Leaders who come up with the exciting ideas and who rely on the behind the scenes work of many to make the vision a reality. Most head coaches know that assistant coaches are indispensable. The chairs of the Big Event and Fall Festival can rattle off the names of dozens of volunteers who "made" their events. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees can point to people who represent the worker bees of our community. And of course, the Headmaster can tell you the names of the "go to" people at Shorecrest who can be counted on when there is an important job to do. Yet, most of us do not know the names of the assistants, volunteers, worker bees and "go to" people who make our school and our community better places to be. I will be the first to say that I appreciate those people in our community who are willing to stick their necks out and assume the large leadership roles available at Shorecrest. These people may get positive recognition, but they earn it. Today, however, I salute the students, teachers, staff, parents and other volunteers who work without a title and without the recognition of the named leader. You are the good guys. You demonstrate to all of us the qualities of generosity, caring, support and humility that we hope to pass on to our children. Thank you to our "behind the scenes" leaders. I hope the guy with a shopping cart full of groceries at Publix allows you to cut in front. I hope you find something you thought you had lost. I hope you get a special note from a favorite friend. I hope you witness an incredibly beautiful sight, and I hope you find some time to breathe deeply and know that you have made life better for your children, their classmates and our Shorecrest community. If you are looking for something to do over the break, send a nice note to one of the "behind the scenes" leaders. I am sure you will find that your private act will lead to the good of the public. Cheers! Three Cheers for...• Shorecrest students who graduated from Cotillion and participated in the Grand Spring Ball held at the St. Petersburg Country Club.
