Message from Mike Murphy

What a Week

Mike MurphyA 19-year-old graduate, Andrew Smith '07 died. The community mourned the loss of the life of a handsome young man who left behind a loving family, friends and tons of potential. The parent of a special volunteer also passed away last week. During these times of loss, we often see the heart of the community.

The seniors and sixth graders went off on their separate class trips. Friendships, memories and new dreams are forged on these adventures. I tip my hat and give a hearty round of applause to the faculty sponsors of these experiences.

At the same time, the Big Event: Viva Las Vegas rolled into the Coliseum. Co-chairs Melinda Pletcher and Laura Horwitz and their Team of Viva Divas provided our parent community with a fabulous party. Their efforts also raised money for SPA and Shorecrest. Bravo!

Leading Today, Building for Tomorrow, our capital campaign, crossed the $6 million dollar mark. Two significant gifts from Shorecrest alumni kicked-off the planned efforts to reach out to graduates and their parents.

Re-enrollment contracts poured into our admissions office. Faculty and staff evaluations were underway in preparation for the distribution of contracts for the coming year. Report cards were written for some divisions. Curriculum and program planning for the coming years continues. The new Digital Citizenship Task Force had its initial meeting. Board Committees addressed financial and construction projects. Athletic teams practiced and competed. The cast for the spring musical, "Fiddler on the Roof," continued rehearsals. Early Childhood had a wonderful Pet Parade. The Youth and Government Team took over Tallahassee and passed five of the twelve bills presented to the youth government.

It was a week of highs and lows. We saw the depth of passion that our teachers, parents and students have for each other. We observed adults and children supporting each other in both the best and worst of situations. We observed the spiritual side of our community that unites us with each other and greater mankind. I pray for a boring week.

Cheers!

Letter from SPA President

The Big Event

'Twas the night before the Big Event
and I couldn't sleep a wink

There was so little time, yet
so much to think

As night gave rise to day
I jumped up from my bed

With Melinda, Laura and the Divas
still dancing in my head

My suit was pressed and my
shoes did shine

We got into our limo and arrived
at the coliseum right on time

Melinda gave me the grand tour and
I saw auction items galore

Laura tried to sell me clothes,
but alas I said "I could afford no more"!

We ran off to taste the food and sip a
glass of wine

The food stations were delicious, my
friends proclaimed "divine"!

We were on to blackjack and it wasn't
even nine

The music was a thumpin' and the people
around me jumpin'

I passed Headmaster Mike schmoozing
VIP's and and the like

Next came Dottie Smay in her beautiful
green dress

Was she a diva too,
or just the library Empress?

When we were able
we found a blackjack table

I thought I was hot and played
two hands sometimes

The dealer was hotter and
took most of my dimes!

My friends laughed and
went beserk

While I tried to play the
slot machine worn by Kim Burke

She took my remaining money and
even my magnetic pin

Go over to the tuition raffle she said
"perhaps you will win"

As the raffle drum began to spin
I calculated my small chance

Sure enough Gina Palumbo began a
free tuition dance!"

Le Auctioneer Extraordinaire" John
McQueen worked the crowd into a frenzy

While hostess Kate Behler would have made
Vanna White green with envy.

Now came the thank you's
and bouquets of roses

For Laura and Melinda who did
their onstage poses.

How did they find the time
for such a Big Event?

I knew that all the patrons
had donated money that was well spent

As the limo slipped away,
I reflected on the day

Melinda, Laura and their Divas
had made us all believers!

Congratulations to Melinda Pletcher, Laura Horwitz and everyone who helped to produce and support the 2008 Big Event.

The magnitude of the effort that created this experience exemplifies the spirit, unbridled enthusiasm and creativity that makes Shorecrest such a unique learning environment. Now about next year...

baseball

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, the Chargers played Berkeley Prep on Hernandez Family Field and lost 6-2. The offensive highlight of the game was a home run by Robby T. in the second inning. Hashim L. and Chris K. each had a single.

The Chargers traveled to Bradenton on Wednesday, Feb. 27 to face St. Stephen's and lost 6-2 in an important district game. Joey S. and Cody T. both pitched in the scoreless game and held Academy Prep to only 2 hits. On offense, the majority of the team's runs resulted from walks, and the team stole bases at will. Congratulations to the team for winning and at the same time showing great sportsmanship!

Varsity Softball

On Monday night, Feb. 25, the Varsity Softball team lost to Canterbury by a score of 7-2. Jaque G. led the team with 1 hit, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Molly W. had both of the RBIs in the game, and Stephanie G. added a double to the Charger offense.

Middle Division Softball

The Shorecrest Middle Division Girls Softball Team split two games this week. On Monday, Feb. 25, the team lost to a strong Canterbury squad by a score of 11-0. The entire team showed defensive improvement but experienced difficulty hitting the hard-throwing pitcher from Canterbury. Hits by Sidney W. and Rachel A. provided the offense. Strong defense was exhibited by Jade C., Amanda I., and Rachel P.

MD softball

Amanda I. pitched the victory and was backed up by timely hitting and great base running from Lainey M., Rachel A., Jade C., Savannah J.-S., Liz M., Elana P., Nicole M. and Sidney W. Also playing well for Shorecrest were Ariana L., Kai K., Allie V., Sophia G., and Taylor W. The Shorecrest team has a record of 1-2 and plays again on Friday, Feb. 29 against Northside Christian at home.
