A kiss on the cheek from a loved one, the words "I love you" from your daughter, some uninterrupted time to spend together with your parents, or from the teenager who may not be "good with words," a freshly folded pile of laundry and a clean kitchen sink—what do all of these have in common? They are all ways to say and hear, "I love you."
Which one means the most to you? Well, it depends. Some people look for the physical touch, others crave words or quality time, and then there are those who subscribe to Nike's slogan and "just do it."
How wonderful to have all these ways to communicate! Your kindergartener may be the type who wants to spend some special time together at the park each afternoon, but isn't so into giving kisses in public. Your teenager might be going through a too-cool-for-mom phase but makes sure to follow all the house rules and even helps with chores that aren't his or her responsibility. We always communicate our love. The key is to listen to the clues loved ones are sending. Unfortunately, we usually look for the love signs to appear exactly as we want to receive them. We may be looking for that kiss goodbye in carline from the all-grown-up kindergartener or the deep conversation about friends with the teen. It may not come. Don't be blind to what does come.
Keep a list. Every time a loved one offers one of these gestures, write it down. You will be amazed how many times a day you are told those three special words, "I love you," in your loved one's own language.
Take it one step further. Return the love in the same way it was given. Quality time is what that kindergartener is looking for at the park, so make some special times in the day to connect on that level - turn off the TV, computer or whatever you are plugged into and devote an uninterrupted block of time to your child. The teenager believes actions speak louder than words. What can you do to help your teen? Sit down and start helping with the model airplane he's working on, grab a book and read next to her while she's studying, bring a sandwich to her room in the middle of a long homework session.
Enjoy discovering this new language. You will be humbled by how many ways we can say and hear, "I love you."

Grandparents and Special Friends Day
|
|
Friday, February 1 was Shorecrest's annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day. With over 700 attendees, more than ever before, it was indeed a very special day! A slideshow showcasing students participating in the classroom, art, and athletics kicked off the festivities, followed by students performing in the theatre for all of the guests. |
Smiles and hugs were plentiful as students greeted their grandparents and special friends and shared their classrooms, schoolwork, and projects. There were introductions aplenty of teachers and friends to the guests and an overall feeling of pride, family and community. |
Enroll/ReenrollEnrollment contracts and financial information have been mailed. If you have not received the mailing, please call the Admissions Office at 456-7511 and we will send you a new packet. Or you can access all of the information, as well as a PDF of the enrollment contract, on the web. Submitting your contract in a timely manner will help us plan for next year's enrollment and budgeting priorities. Please return contracts and tuition deposits by February 15. Any questions should be directed to Tony Pemble, Director of Finance, or Diana Craig, Director of Admissions. Service LearningGetting Ready to Share the LoveFifth graders gathered during Advisory on Wednesday to listen to representatives from PARC and the Neighborly Care Network talk about their organizations. As a special Valentine's Day service project, the fifth graders will be visiting these organizations, and the sixth graders will be going to The Hospice of the Pinellas Suncoast and the Louise Graham Center to deliver Valentine's wishes on February 14.

Tuesday morning many of our first-year families gathered in the Theatre lobby for the Headmaster's annual New Parent Breakfast. Mike Murphy welcomed the group and spoke about the importance of volunteering, not only as a help to the school, but also as a way of becoming connected and meeting new friends.
Janet Root, Chairman of the Arts & Humanities Department, spoke about the many offerings available to our students in the performing and visual arts, and how fortunate our students are to be taught by such a talented and award-winning faculty in the arts.
Phil Hayford, Athletic Director, spoke of the countless opportunities for our students in the sports program (did you know that we have 44 athletic teams?!) and the reputation we have for strong athletics and good sportsmanship. Chris Powers, Assistant Director of College Counseling, spoke about the college guidance we provide, our strong SAT scores and our outstanding list of college acceptances. | Mr. Murphy also spoke of the importance of giving both to the Annual Fund and to the Capital Campaign, and how independent schools rely on annual tax-deductible gifts to help cover the school's operating expenses. Gary Butts, Advancement Director, offered tours of the new high school construction. Guests donned hard hats and were treated to a sneak peek of Landy Hall, with tours conducted by Stephen Manella, Upper Division Head, and Dave Sharlow, Director of Operations.
We extend our gratitude to Susan Wehrmann, who prepared the delicious breakfast spread. For over 15 years, Susan has been cooking for this breakfast and the traditional Welcome Dinner in August. This was her last event, as her daughter will be graduating this year. Susan represents what it means to be a dedicated volunteer, and we will miss her (and her cooking!) in future years. Thank you, Susan! |
