The Florida Blood Services bloodmobile will be on the Shorecrest campus on Friday, Feb. 8 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Parents are welcome to stop by and donate. You'll learn your blood pressure right away and can get your cholesterol level by phone a few days later. And the t-shirt and fruit juice can't be beat!

Persons 17 years of age or older and in good health can donate blood. Sixteen year old students can donate with their parent's permission - see Mrs. McKay for a form.
The goal of this drive is twenty units. We hope to see you there.
Spirit Wear will be on sale on Tuesday, January 29 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. Don't forget that Spirit Day is on Wednesday, January 30!

We are having a contest for all students to design a Shorecrest Chargers logo for 2008-2009 Spirit Wear items. Please place your designs in the designated box in each Division office.
Over 190 student identification photos were taken on Tuesday at the Ident-a-Kid program. The photo identification cards will be delivered to Shorecrest within two weeks.

A big thanks to Stacy Gloer, Connie Geiger and Marcia Johnston for volunteering that day and helping the program to run smoothly!
The responses to the invitations have been terrific from those Grandparents and Special Friends who will be guests of our students on Friday, February 1. This year will be the 24th occasion to recognize this special group of people who are so important in the lives of our students. Please remind those who will be attending to RSVP to the Office of Advancement: dshenkman @shorecrest.org or by fax to (727) 521-1452 or by phone (727) 456-7515.
As always, we appreciate our families honoring the tradition of leaving the theatre seating for Grandparents and Special Friends. With the limited number of seats in the theatre, it is impossible for us to accommodate parents and guests. There are very few times that we ask parents not to attend a school function. This is one of those times, as it will help us accommodate as many guests as possible.
Thank you for your assistance.
By overwhelming requests, we will be taking Polaroid photos of our students with their Grandparents or Special Friends to give away as a keepsake of this special day. This has been such a popular memento in previous years.
If you have a Polaroid camera that you would be willing to loan for this day and/or if you want to volunteer as a photographer to help with the photos, please contact Kris Bodner (727) 510-5058 or Christi Mills (727) 415-6300.
You can also drop cameras off at the Advancement Office, across from the Mini Gym, anytime between now and Wednesday, January 30. Please make sure your camera is labeled with your name.
When you come to this year's NE St. Petersburg Relay For Life at Shorecrest, you'll be able to experience different holidays and celebrations as you walk around the track. Each Relay team is selecting a date from the calendar, some traditional and well known and others unusual and wacky, and will decorate their campsite and build their activities, items sold, and food and drink around the team theme.

Letter from the Headmaster
Remember back in August when I wrote in E-Bytes that we were seeking leadership for the 2008 Big Event? On Tuesday morning I walked into the Theatre Conference room to find Melinda Pletcher and Laura Horwitz, our Big Event co-chairs, with 20 other parents who are chairing the different elements of Viva Las Vegas. Melinda, Laura and their committee chairs have created tons of positive energy for what looks like a great night of fun for our Shorecrest parents. Admittedly, I am not a poker player, but I look forward to cheering on everyone who participates in the Charger Poker Challenge and the other fun activities planned for the evening. Invitations are ready to go out in the mail. I hope to see you all there. The second semester is underway. Planning for Grandparents and Special Friends Day, class plays, our spring musical Fiddler on the Roof, soccer play-offs, speech, history and science fair presentations and dozens of other activities where our students will perform and excel are in full gear. Re-enrollment contracts will be mailed at the end of this week. Attached to the re-enrollment letter is a report I have developed to provide Shorecrest parents information about the financial operation of the school. This information is often requested. I believe it will provide parents with a better understanding of the business operation of our school. However, as important as the business side of the school is for the trustees, administration and parents who pay tuition, the quality of the education children receive at school is paramount. One might try to put a price tag on successful college placement, test scores, athletic, arts and service achievements, but we know that a great education is not fully understood until the student moves on and experiences success. I can be pleased that a child is having a great year in kindergarten or in twelfth grade. I am much happier to know that those children thrived in first grade or during freshman year of college. In business we commonly seek a return on investment (ROI). Shorecrest students and parents, like successful investors, often need to be patient to see the full value of an education that expects students to reach beyond their comfort zones. We want our children to be emotionally healthy and to have strong self-esteem. I am convinced that the teachers and parents who guide students to work hard and to develop skills they can use for a lifetime are the most successful in developing authentic self-esteem and healthy children. The other day while touring a candidate through the Lower Division, the person commented on the high level of independence being demonstrated by the students. This is happening because our children know that schoolwork is important and because the teachers have created an environment that promotes student growth. There are life skills being taught and encouraged every day at school. Some can be measured today and others may need to simmer and emerge in a grander fashion when a child matures. We look forward to the ongoing process of education with your children at Shorecrest. Cheers! Arts BeatStudents Perform at Temple Beth-El Art ShowThe Shorecrest Musical Theatre group will be performing a medley from the upcoming spring musical Fiddler on the Roof, and musical highlights from the Fall Showcase and Thespian conference at the Temple Beth-El Art Show on Monday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m.
