The Holiday Gift Drive has begun! The Shorecrest community will be fulfilling the wishes of over 190 children in our area. You should have received the Family Wish List for your child's class or grade. Gifts can be dropped off in your child's classroom.
Here are some common questions asked during the Gift Drive:
Do I purchase for every child on the list?
Only if you want to but it is not necessary. Have your student look at the list and pick out a gift on the wish list that they would like to buy. You may want to get together with several other parents to purchase the larger items on the list! Gift Cards are always appreciated, and they go straight to the child!
What about duplicates?
We have been doing the Gift Drive for over 23 years, and duplications have not been a problem! If there are duplications, we will shuffle gifts around. Duplications are great! The children in the Guardian Ad Litem Program do not receive gifts from any other group during the holidays or throughout the year. While they like to receive gifts, they also like to give gifts. If they get a duplicate of an item on their wish list, they are able to give!
Your participation in this program is greatly appreciated! Remember, collection of gifts ends on December 7! Please do not hesitate to call Paula Van Law, Beth Rosenbluth or Jean Johnston.
The 2008 Shorecrest yearbook, Crestviews, is now available for purchase at the pre-publication price of $55. Students in EC through the fourth grade may order their yearbook now. (Students in fifth grade and higher receive a yearbook as part of their tuition.) Please make checks payable to Shorecrest and send to the attention of Tony Napodano in the Upper Division.
Florida Blood Services will hold a blood drive on the Shorecrest campus on Friday, Dec. 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Stop by the Bloodmobile east of the Central Administration Building and save a life.

Teachers, parents, administrators and staff - come and donate. Students can participate as well.

Florida Blood Services is now allowing 16 year olds to donate whole blood with informed consent by a parent or guardian.

Song and Dance '07 |
|
On Saturday evening, November 17, Upper Division Music Director Lee Ahlin welcomed the crowd to the Fall Performing Arts Showcase: Song and Dance '07. The entire program was a joy to watch, and each act was better than the next. The spectacular opening number, "I Wanna Be a Producer" from the musical "The Producers," featured sophomore Mitch M. singing and dancing with the Upper Division Dance Troupe who danced Broadway-style alongside him.
Next, the Middle Division Music Group led by Mr. McCarthy skillfully sang the haunting lead song from the "Phantom of the Opera" and later in the show the ballad "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" from the "Lion King." Continuing with Broadway numbers, junior Emily M. sang and danced her way through the jazzy number "I Can't Do it Alone" from "Chicago."
The Shorecrest Concert Band skillfully played the lively and difficult piece "Sabre Dance" conducted by Mr. Glaister, while the "All That Jazz" band played "Comin' Home Baby" with each member having a chance to shine while playing solo, giving audience members the feeling of being in a real jazz club. A trio of seniors Tiffany C., Lauren S., and Danielle T. sang "After the Gold Rush," harmonizing flawlessly, followed by The Guitarists who played the surf rock song "Pipeline."
The Upper Division Vocal Ensemble sang a variety of numbers which showed their vocal range and flexibility from a Gershwin medley to Police's "King of Pain"; the Ninth Grade Chorus sang the upbeat "I Know a Place"; and the Upper Division Women's Chorus sang Carole King's "It's Too Late," bringing back the mellow sounds from the seventies with wonderful group harmony. |
Freshman Peyton L.'s years of professional dance training were obvious as she performed a jazz dance with perfect lines, splits, leaps and acrobatics. The dance was choreographed by Cheryl Lee's daughter, Shorecrest alumna Emilee Dupre '02, who is currently performing in the first national tour of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

"Following Alice" |
|
Lower and Middle Division students followed Alice through a "Wonderland" created at various locales around the Janet Root Theatre complex and Faculty Garden. The effect was magical and delightful. |

Due to the increasing size of E-Bytes, we have added a second section that will cover all of the week's activities in each division.

The Shorecrest Mission is:
"To provide our students with opportunities to grow intellectually and morally, to find artistic fulfillment, to achieve physical fitness and to develop a sense of their responsibility to our local and global communities."
Admittedly, our Mission Statement is generic. Many great independent schools have very similar language in their missions. Yet anyone who spends time at other schools and then visits Shorecrest realizes that Shorecrest is special.
The truth is we have faculty, staff, parents and volunteers who are committed to providing great growth opportunities for our students. We enroll students who are willing to take full advantage of the opportunities. Our students and adults share a common value in an enthusiasm to excel and to be good citizens. When one learns more about the achievement of our students and the ability of the adults in the community, it becomes increasingly clear why Shorecrest is outstanding. Teachers and students engage in truly great experiences every day. This community is alive with life-long learners who work every day to make Shorecrest the best school in the southeast.
The physical evidence of improvement is obvious to anyone who drives around the backside of the campus and sees the construction of Landy Hall. Maybe less obvious, but just as important, are the changes one can witness going on in classrooms all around campus. One just needs to read E-Bytes to learn about advances teachers and students are making in their classrooms. It is impressive to review the number of professional development programs faculty have experienced just this fall. The dedication and commitment of our teachers to learn and implement the advances that brain research, curriculum development and technology are providing our students is admirable. The faculty is modeling life-long learning to their students.
As we approach the mid-year point of this school year, I encourage everyone to maintain the commitment to providing our students with great experiences. I encourage our students to continue to take full advantage of the opportunities the teachers, coaches and parents are providing. And I applaud the wonderful work I am seeing our faculty, students and parents doing all around Shorecrest and our St. Petersburg community.
Cheers!
Tuesday, December 6
When you hear of a SPA meeting, what comes to mind? Is it one of these listed below?
The two correct answers are 2 and 5. SPA is the Shorecrest Parent Association, and did you know we are ALL members? Any parent who has a child attending Shorecrest is a member of SPA. You don't have to do anything to "sign-up," we have no annual fees (promise!), and we try to have lots of fun helping our school become a better place.
Some of the activities we do are big, including the Fall Festival, the Greenery Drive, Teacher Appreciation Day and more. There are also just as many volunteers and activities that are more behind the scenes but are equally as important. These include Helping Hands, Cookie Days for Middle Division, faculty luncheons and many more. Each activity supports our school and the SPA mission statement.
SPA meetings are held several times a year to discuss ongoing activities sponsored by the association. Typically a guest speaker will briefly discuss a topic relevant to Shorecrest parents, and then the committee chairs will discuss various activities such as the Holiday Gift Drive, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, and other upcoming events. You will always leave feeling more informed about the happenings of Shorecrest. You will also have the opportunity to volunteer for anything that might interest you. We promise we won't make you the Fall Festival Chair your first meeting!
Please join us next Thursday, December 6 at 8:15 a.m. in the Janet Root Theatre. Upper Division Head Stephen Manella and third grade teacher Wendy Drexler are going to give a very interesting presentation about the Internet, and what we should know as parents to help protect our children. Starbucks Coffee and snacks will be served in the lobby. We'd love to see you there!

Shorecrest students from Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions took part in the Postcards from Home project once again this year. Lower Division parent Kerry Kriseman headed up the effort that yielded 350 postcards carrying messages of thanks and holiday wishes to the men and women of the U. S. military who won't be home with their families this holiday season.

The postcards from Shorecrest are being hand-carried to Iraq by the son of Florida State Representative Janet Long who is returning for his tour of duty.
Before heading out for their own families' Thanksgiving celebrations, a group of Boys Varsity Basketball players, accompanied by Head Coach Brian Marchetti, Lower Division teacher and team videographer Gabe Lee, and Headmaster Mike Murphy, helped distribute Thanksgiving meals and care packages to the homeless.
Organized by We Feed the Hungry and underwritten by Carlton Fields, PA, the students handed out turkey dinners and care packages containing several other food items to the nearly 200 men and women who gathered at Mirror Lake.

Middle Division girls, including Girl Scouts from Troops 50 and 912, assembled the 150 care packages on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510 if you have any questions or need more information about any of these service activities.
• Parents Sidney Smith, Margaret Abbey, Melba Gonzalez-Delgado, and Marcia Johnston, and the rest of the Greenery volunteers who have been working so hard on this project.

We appreciate you!
• Jean Carnes, Director of The Learning Center at Shorecrest, who received the National Education Week award from Dr. Jeannine Kranzow.

The award goes to the top scholar among the doctoral students at Argosy University. Mrs. Carnes' doctoral topic is program evaluation of learning centers in independent schools.
• Fifth graders Katerina A. and Sarah M., second graders Alexander A. and Kayelin L., and first grader Reagan Q. who will be performing in Pinellas County Center for the Arts' production of The Nutcracker on Friday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 1 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Gibbs High School, 850 34th Street South, St. Petersburg.

• Bailee M., Josh M., and Jasmine L., who participated in the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program at Tyrone Square Mall.

Flik's food service on-campus kitchen facility is now completed and in full operation as of this week.
Congratulations, Flik!

Individual results were:
Boys (out of 175 runners)

Congratulations to the team and coaches for another exciting season! The future looks bright for the Cross Country program for years to come.
The Boys Varsity Soccer team hosted Northside Christian on Thursday, Nov. 15, and won 6-3. The Charger offense dominated with a tremendous performance by Phil V., who scored four goals. Stephen S. and Anthony H. rounded out the scoring.
On Tuesday, Nov. 27, the Chargers traveled to Keswick Christian and won 7-0. Goals were made by Phil V. (2), Anthony H. (2), Quinn E., Stephen S., and Alistair F. The Boys JV Soccer team played their first game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and beat Keswick 8-0 in a game shortened by 30 minutes due to the eight-goal rule. Matt S. and Jordan C. had two goals each, while Colin D., Ryan D., Caelum S. and Ashton W. scored one each.

Steve M. made a penalty kick save in goal, but otherwise didn't face a shot.
The Middle Division Boys Green Soccer team had a very successful week with two 8-0 victories. On Friday, Nov. 16, the boys defeated the Berkeley Prep Blue team with a complete team performance. The Chargers had six assists to go with their eight goals and were paced by forwards David S. (two goals) and Rheese W. (one goal, one assist). It was a satisfying win against a traditional rival.

On Tuesday, Nov. 27, the Chargers again attacked early and often, building a 7-0 halftime lead. The man of the match was midfielder Jonny A., who scored twice in the first half. In both games, goalkeepers Jared E. and Michael W. contributed to the shutouts. The team is now 3-0 and faces a tough test on the road this Friday against St. Paul's. Online photos
The Shorecrest Boys Gold team traveled to Berkeley Prep on Monday, Nov. 26, and lost 3-1 to a well-coached and skilled opponent. Shorecrest spotted the Berkeley squad a 2-goal lead before playing to their potential in the second half. Chris H. scored on a brilliant short chip shot in front of the goal. Shorecrest got the better of play in the second half with a sustained offensive attack. Alex G. played well throughout the second half in his first action of the year at goalie.
Berkeley tallied their last goal during the last five seconds of the match. Jacob A. took man-of-the-match honors for Shorecrest with his inspired and consistent play throughout the contest.

It was deja vu for the Golds Wednesday night, Nov. 28, as they once again tied Pinellas Prep 2-2 at home. Aleksi H. opened the scoring for Shorecrest, placing a crossing pass from Max F. into the back of the net. The second goal was scored on a beautiful three-pass combination. Garrett S. began the play from his defensive stopper position by beating the Pinellas Prep offense to the ball and unleashing a 30-yard pinpoint pass to Max F. Max F. once again got the assist by hitting Chris H. in front of the goal. Chris H. made good on the opportunity with a well-placed close range shot.
The Golds outplayed Pinellas Prep, getting the better of time of possession and shots on goal. Parker D. and Bak M. controlled much of the midfield play with their energy and hustle. Alex G. continued to establish himself as a solid presence in goal.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Chargers traveled to Tampa Catholic and won a hard-fought game by the score of 1-0. The lone goal was scored by Chelsea S.
The Girls Varsity Soccer team hosted Academy of Holy Names on Monday, Nov. 26, and won 2-1. Serena H. and Jenn C. scored the Chargers' goals.

The team's overall record is 6-1.

Goals were scored by Tanja G. and Nicole P. Rachel B. anchored the defense, and there was outstanding midfield play by Claire L. and Hayley J. All the girls played a well-balanced game.
On Monday, Nov. 26, the JV Girls Soccer team had its first home match of the season and defeated Academy of the Holy Names 2-0. Goals were scored by Hayley J. and Nicole P. Jessica M., Tori D., and Hayley J. combined for a shutout in goal. Newcomers Kathryn K. and Rebecca K. had an immediate impact, and Hallie A. had an outstanding defensive game.
The girls played well throughout the match, not allowing Academy many chances to score. The girls are looking forward to their rematch with Tampa Prep, hoping to sweep the season series, at home next Wednesday.
On Friday, Nov. 16, the Girls Middle Division Soccer Green team played Berkeley at home and won 4-0. Center striker Sophia G. scored three goals, and center midfielder Alexis O. scored one. Assists were made by Assata T. and Julia B. The entire team played a superb game.

The defense, which allowed only two shots on goal, was anchored by keeper Rachel P., and defenders Hannah W., Skyler E. and Sydney K. Outstanding midfield play was shown by Caitlin S., Teagan C., Sarah L., and Erica S. Up front Shorecrest kept the pressure on due to the hustle of Jade C. and Annie C.
On Monday, Nov. 26, the Chargers traveled to Berkeley Prep with only eleven girls, including Caitlin A. and Jade C. from the Green team. The team lost 5-3 in the second half after leading most of the way. The team played well considering they had no subs.

The Middle Division Girls Soccer Gold team demonstrated a wide array of skills in Wednesday's 7-0 victory at home over Tampa Prep. Seven different girls scored goals in the game: Julia B., Elizabeth H., Annie C., "C" T., Kai K., Savannah J.-S., and Amanda I. (Julia B. leads the team with five goals in three games.) Kai K. and Lainey M. split duties in goal, and both played the position perfectly.
Also exceptional in keeping the ball on the opposition's half of the field for most of the game were the often unheralded defenders and midfielders Sarah L., Kelly H., Emily L., Mimi M., Nicole M., Taylor W., Teagan C., and Meggie G.
The Girls Varsity Basketball team played Indian Rocks Christian on Friday, Nov. 16, and lost 47-37. The Chargers were behind early but came back strong and gave the Eagles a good game. Jasmine C. led all scorers with fifteen points, followed by Bronwyn G. with nine points and Sandy L. with eight points.

The Chargers hosted Bradenton Christian on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and won by the score of 48-43. Top scorers were Rachel S. (9 pts.), Sandy L. (8 pts.), Becky D. (7 pts.), Jasmine C. (7 pts.), and Natalie S. (7 pts.).
On Wednesday, Nov. 21, the Chargers traveled to St. Pete Catholic to play in their Thanksgiving Tournament against St. Pete High. The Chargers lost the game 49-14. Jasmine C. led the team with seven points.
On Wednesday, Nov. 28, the Chargers hosted Tampa Prep in the Crisp Gymnasium and won 40-36 in a hard-fought game. Jasmine C. was high scorer with twelve points, followed by Becky D., Allie W., and Bronwyn G. with 7 points each.
The Girls JV Basketball team traveled to Indian Rocks Christian on Friday, Nov. 16, and lost 33-20. The team had a good comeback in the second half. Stephanie G. and Rachel T. were high scorers with six points each, and Sidney W. added another four points.
On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the Chargers hosted Bradenton Christian and lost 53-13. The team played hard and fought together as a team. Sarah E. and Sarah O. each scored four points.
The Chargers played St. Pete High on Wednesday, Nov. 21, in a Thanksgiving Tourney at St. Pete Catholic and lost 28-12. The team put out a much better defensive effort and showed good hustle after the ball. Sarah E. was the high scorer with six points.
The Middle Division Lady Chargers basketball team finally started the basketball season with much excitement against Admiral Farragut on Monday, Nov. 26. For many of the girls on the team, it was the first official game they have played, and they all gave it their best.

As a team they learned so much and became more aggressive every quarter. Unfortunately, Admiral Farragut triumphed in the end, but the Chargers will be looking to make a statement next time we face them. Molly M. was our high scorer with five points.
The Chargers traveled to Admiral Farragut on Monday, Nov. 26, for their first game of the season and lost 57-26.
The team got behind early and had a hard time coming back from the early deficit. High scorer for the Chargers was Jack S. with 21 points.
The Shorecrest Middle Division Boys Basketball team kicked off its season last Monday, Nov. 26, and Tuesday, Nov. 27. The team is coming off a huge turnaround season in 2006/07 with a 13-6 record and is hoping to build on last year's success in the 07/08 season.
On Monday, Nov. 26, the team came out with first game jitters, and it took until the second half to settle down and pull away. Luke B. dropped in fourteen points, and Nick N. and Luke N. had eight and six points respectively. Everyone played and contributed to the first win of the season.

The Chargers played Canterbury on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and won by the score of 31-28. The game was a real "nail biter" from start to finish, with defensive intensity on both ends making scoring baskets a premium. Nick N. was the leading scorer with ten points, Carson R. provided a big defensive energy boost and had eight points, and Luke N. and Jake B. contributed five points each.
Johnny K. came out with a great defensive effort at a key time, and the team stayed composed when it counted most. The future looks bright for Shorecrest basketball, with a strong class of young men who have dedicated considerable focus and energy to the sport.
