The third annual Alumni Legacy Breakfast took place Friday, March 5 in the Crisp Gymnasium. Alumni enjoyed breakfast with their legacy children and were treated to a special performance of "Together Wherever We Go" from the musical "Gypsy," performed by sixth graders Bailee M. and Meredith L. |
Coach Phil Hayford also spoke and shared memories of our alumni parents when they were students at Shorecrest. As always, the slideshow of alumni and their children entertained the group and illustrated the past, present, and future of Shorecrest. |
Headmaster's MessageSpring Break It seems a little odd saying that I plan to stay in Florida to get a break from the cold, but that is what I hope to do! The break marks the end of the third quarter of the year. This is a time when I encourage students, teachers and parents to review the goals that were established in August and make appropriate adjustments in order to end the year in the most positive manner. I hope all members of our community are able to enjoy the change of pace provided by this vacation. At the same time, I hope you are able to recharge for a strong finish to a wonderful school year. Springtime brings fantastic activities and traditions, such as Relay For Life, Duathlon, Prom, honors tapping and award ceremonies, standardized testing including ERB's and AP's, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. We will need everyone to come back ready to contribute to the success of our students, their teachers and family goals. Cheers! Three Cheers for...• Senior Hayden D., who has signed with Juncos Racing for the first two races of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship. |
• Senior Maegan C., who is collecting recipes to compile into a cookbook for her Girl Scout Gold Award. The finished cookbook will be handed out at a healthy eating seminar. If you have some favorite recipes that you would like to contribute to the cookbook, please send them to cookingclubrecipes @yahoo.com All categories (hors d'oeuvres, main dishes, side dishes, salads, desserts) are welcome! Thank you! |

• Seventh grader Ali A., who was interviewed on Radio Disney to discuss Relay For Life. This interview was to talk about and promote Relay For Life across the state of Florida to help get people to their local relays.

She discussed Relay For Life in general, using experiences from her past Shorecrest Relays. The show will air this Saturday, March 13 at 6:30 a.m. Ali said it was a lot of fun and easy to discuss because it is a topic that is very important to her.

Join us for this year's Relay For Life on the Shorecrest campus, on Haskell Field, Friday, March 26. From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Shorecrest students will be participating with their PE classes in Alpha through eighth grade, and Upper Division students will enjoy their spring barbecue and concert at this year's Relay For Life. After 3 p.m. the event will be open to the public, with the Survivors Dinner at 5 p.m. followed by the Survivors Celebration at 6 p.m.
This year's Survivor speakers are Shorecrest's own beloved drama teachers Lillian Nelson and Bill Leavengood. They have quietly participated in the past four Relays For Life on our campus, and this year they'll take center stage to share their courageous battles with and triumphs over cancer.

The Luminaria Ceremony to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived will take place at 9 p.m., and the event will conclude by midnight. Please join us and support our fundraising efforts on behalf of the American Cancer Society in the very important work they do towards finding a cure for cancer.
All day — "Paint the Campus Purple Day" — students will be dressed in purple from head to toe and the campus will be decorated as we prepare for our "Party with a Purpose," Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.

3:00-9:00 p.m. — Support Relay with a trip to Chick-fil-A — Stop by the Fourth Street Chick-fil-A, mention Shorecrest's Relay For Life and turn in your receipt from your purchase. They will donate a portion of their sales to benefit our Relay For Life.

As the USNS Comfort prepared to leave Haiti, we received another update from LCDR Overton that confirms how much the care packages that we provided have helped. Our care packages are reaching people and places that we didn't even anticipate.
"… I was talking to a nurse last night in the laundry room and she asked me if I heard the story of the priest who came to visit the ship. We were trying to figure out where to send the last of our donated goods, and this priest was on board to see the ship. She asked him if he needed any donated goods. He asked what did she mean by donated goods and she explained how friends and family of the crew sent boxes of clothes, shoes, toys, etc. He just looked at her in amazement and said that this was the answer to their prayers. He went on to tell a story about how his entire parish was destroyed by the earthquake and the people who survived no longer had houses or any personal items. They would all come to him and ask what they were supposed to do now that they had nothing. His answer was always to keep praying that God would help them somehow. Well, the day he came to the ship their prayers were truly answered and we delivered six pallets of boxes to their village two hours inland the next day. It was such a blessing and I just thought you all would be interested to know that your items went to such a deserving group of people who will no doubt put everything to great use!"
We are now in the process of getting in touch with Father Granjean directly with the hope that we can connect with a local school and school children so that some of our French students can begin to correspond with them and find out how we can help further as the people of Haiti continue to recover and rebuild after this disaster.

Shorecrest's other efforts on behalf of Haiti have included a donation of $340.97 to the Red Cross through the efforts of the Upper Division students who worked with and on behalf of the Red Cross during the recent Service/Mini-mester Week. Mme. Carnes' students have also collected money by selling French food items, and they've recently sent a donation to the Haitian orphanage that they've supported for many years. Sophomore Adham S. will continue his coin collecting through this week in the Upper Division to benefit Partners in Health.
