The third annual Alumni Legacy Breakfast took place Friday, March 5 in the Crisp Gymnasium. Alumni enjoyed breakfast with their legacy children and were treated to a special performance of "Together Wherever We Go" from the musical "Gypsy," performed by sixth graders Bailee M. and Meredith L.

Legacy

Headmaster Mike Murphy welcomed the group and introduced the first of three speakers, Mrs. Gaye Whitecage, who spoke about the impact the children leave on her and how special it is to be a member of this community.

Legacy

Coach Phil Hayford also spoke and shared memories of our alumni parents when they were students at Shorecrest. As always, the slideshow of alumni and their children entertained the group and illustrated the past, present, and future of Shorecrest.

Legacy

Athletic Director Tripp Welborne also addressed the crowd and expressed his excitement about one day being able to tell stories to the children of our current legacy students. Legacy children were also given a special pair of legacy shades because it's obvious that their future is so bright!

Headmaster's Message

Spring Break

Mike Murphy

It seems a little odd saying that I plan to stay in Florida to get a break from the cold, but that is what I hope to do!

The break marks the end of the third quarter of the year. This is a time when I encourage students, teachers and parents to review the goals that were established in August and make appropriate adjustments in order to end the year in the most positive manner.

I hope all members of our community are able to enjoy the change of pace provided by this vacation. At the same time, I hope you are able to recharge for a strong finish to a wonderful school year. Springtime brings fantastic activities and traditions, such as Relay For Life, Duathlon, Prom, honors tapping and award ceremonies, standardized testing including ERB's and AP's, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. We will need everyone to come back ready to contribute to the success of our students, their teachers and family goals.

Cheers!

Clear the Clutter/Cure Cancer Yard Sale

yard sale

Four teams got together on Saturday, March 6 in front of the Lower Division for the second annual yard sale to benefit Shorecrest's Relay For Life. Their proceeds for the morning were over $1,000.

relay

Team Quackers' captain Jake M. demonstrated the Ab Lounger which was listed for $20. A shopper who stopped by marveled at the great buy since he had just bought one last weekend for $30. Relay For Life Event Chair Christi DeGeare picked up a good deal on a hat for $1. Even Headmaster Mike Murphy stopped by to shop and left with a bike.

Barbie

Fourth grade teacher Dianna Tucker donated several collectible Barbie dolls to raise money for Relay For Life through Team Green Eyes, captained by Lower Division music teacher Valerie Díaz Leroy. Upper Division art teacher Mark Runge was there to lend a hand, along with Lower Division technology teacher Anna Baralt and Debbie Becker from the Lower Division office.

The largest sales area was organized and run by Shorecrest Helping Hands team, led by parent Gayle Horden. Their efforts brought in just over $500. Most of the shoppers who came through were from the local community, with quite a few "snowbirds" from as far north as Canada. Several other Shorecrest students and families stopped by to support the event.

Team King's Fools benefited from some items donated by Ms. Stevens and from selling leftover items handed over by the other teams that had to leave early, and they raised $114 towards their goal.

Thanks to all who participated in the yard sale by organizing, selling, donating, and shopping. The money goes to a great cause.

Help for Haiti update

As the USNS Comfort prepared to leave Haiti, we received another update from LCDR Overton that confirms how much the care packages that we provided have helped. Our care packages are reaching people and places that we didn't even anticipate.

"… I was talking to a nurse last night in the laundry room and she asked me if I heard the story of the priest who came to visit the ship. We were trying to figure out where to send the last of our donated goods, and this priest was on board to see the ship. She asked him if he needed any donated goods. He asked what did she mean by donated goods and she explained how friends and family of the crew sent boxes of clothes, shoes, toys, etc. He just looked at her in amazement and said that this was the answer to their prayers. He went on to tell a story about how his entire parish was destroyed by the earthquake and the people who survived no longer had houses or any personal items. They would all come to him and ask what they were supposed to do now that they had nothing. His answer was always to keep praying that God would help them somehow. Well, the day he came to the ship their prayers were truly answered and we delivered six pallets of boxes to their village two hours inland the next day. It was such a blessing and I just thought you all would be interested to know that your items went to such a deserving group of people who will no doubt put everything to great use!"

We are now in the process of getting in touch with Father Granjean directly with the hope that we can connect with a local school and school children so that some of our French students can begin to correspond with them and find out how we can help further as the people of Haiti continue to recover and rebuild after this disaster.

donation boxes

Shorecrest's other efforts on behalf of Haiti have included a donation of $340.97 to the Red Cross through the efforts of the Upper Division students who worked with and on behalf of the Red Cross during the recent Service/Mini-mester Week. Mme. Carnes' students have also collected money by selling French food items, and they've recently sent a donation to the Haitian orphanage that they've supported for many years. Sophomore Adham S. will continue his coin collecting through this week in the Upper Division to benefit Partners in Health.

Attention: freshmen and sophomores

Do you have enough service hours to meet your 20-hour requirement for this year? Please check in with Ms. Stevens about the status of your hours and to sign up for upcoming opportunities to earn hours if you are still short of your goal. Thank you.
